Dermal Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Baby Diapers: A Re-Evaluation of the Quantitative Health Risk Assessment Conducted by The French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (ANSES).

In January 2019, the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (ANSES) published an opinion on risks related to the presence of hazardous chemicals in infant diapers. ANSES found that health reference values were largely exceeded for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), dioxins (PCCD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorobiphenyls (DL-PCBs). The levels of formaldehyde and some fragrances were also considered potentially unsafe. Therefore, ANSES concluded that actions have to be taken to restrict levels of these contaminants in diapers. Under the exposure scenario dee

Prevalence and work-relatedness of self-reported carpal tunnel syndrome among U.S. workers: analysis of the Occupational Health Supplement data of 1988 National Health Interview Survey.

To estimate the prevalence and work-relatedness of self-reported carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) among U.S. workers, data from the Occupational Health Supplement of 1988 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) were analyzed. Among 127 million "recent" workers" who worked during the 12 months prior to the survey, 1.47% (95% CI: 1.30; 1.65), or 1.87 million self-reported CTS, and 0.53% (95% CI: 0.42; 0.65), or 675,000, stated that their prolonged hand discomfort was called CTS by a medical person. Occupations with the highest prevalence of self-reported CTS were mail service, health care, construct

A Public health wound: health and work among children engaged in the worst forms of child labour in the informal sector in Dhaka, Bangladesh: a retrospective analysis of Médecins Sans Frontières occupational health data from 2014 to 2023.

BACKGROUND: Bangladesh has the second highest burden of child labour in South Asia. The informal sector employs most of the children however, data on health including injuries and place of work for children are limited. As the deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals to end child labour is upon us, it is paramount to document the impact of child labour on health. This study aims to contribute to this knowledge gap by presenting medical data from occupational health clinics (OHCs) set up by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in a peri-urban area of Dhaka, Bangladesh. METHODS: We did a retros

Hand-in-Hand-improving occupational health and quality of care in early education and care: study protocol for a cluster-randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: In Norway, the early education and care (ECEC) sector has the highest rate of work-related fatigue and sickness absence across all sectors. Work in ECEC can be characterized as physically and emotionally demanding, which may lead to fatigue and the two most common causes of sickness absence in the ECEC sector, i.e., musculoskeletal and mental health issues. Improvements to the work environment can lead to better health for ECEC employees and improve ECEC quality. Therefore, work environment, employee health, and ECEC quality go Hand-in-Hand. This paper presents the protocol for c

An evidence-informed occupational health curriculum for pre-deployment preparation of aquanauts in underwater habitats: a scenario-based framework development study.

BACKGROUND: Underwater habitats represent emerging extreme workplaces in which pressure exposure, immersion, confined living, external underwater tasks, and delayed access to definitive care create combined occupational health and safety demands. Candidate selection establishes baseline suitability. It cannot, on its own, specify which preventive and response capabilities should be taught, practiced, and documented between selection and deployment. METHODS: We developed a scenario-based, evidence-informed occupational health curriculum for the pre-deployment preparation of non-medical researc

Associations between fatigue, burnout, and risk behaviors in mental health occupational therapists: a cross-sectional study of coping and substance use.

BACKGROUND: Occupational therapists working in mental health services face sustained emotional demands, high workload, and clinical complexity, which may increase burnout risk. While Maslach's three-dimensional model remains the gold standard for conceptualization, a gap persists in integrating physiological factors such as fatigue and behavioral risk outcomes within a theoretically derived framework in occupational therapy. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the associations between fatigue and burnout among mental health occupational therapists in Spain, and to examine the relationships among emotional

Occupational safety and health risks among plumbers: A qualitative study of workplace hazards, safety practices, and system-level gaps in Texas.

BACKGROUND: The plumbing trade exposes workers to ongoing workplace hazards that pose significant health risks. This issue is well known but remains unresolved. A key question remains: why have current safety measures, such as training programs, regulatory standards, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, failed to reduce injury rates or significantly improve safety in the plumbing field. OBJECTIVES: Despite well-documented hazards in plumbing work, qualitative research examining why existing safety measures continue to fail plumbers-particularly in trade-specific U.S. contexts

Burned out and thinking of quitting: A moderated-mediation model of frontline health care workers and occupational stigma during COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Work burnout and job turnover intentions pose challenges for health care workers. An understudied area of impact is COVID-19 occupational stigma consciousness or the awareness that one's occupation has been stigmatized because of proximity and exposure to COVID-19. PURPOSES: Using job demands-resources theory, we examine the impact of COVID-19 occupational stigma consciousness, a novel job demand, on work burnout and job turnover intentions and the effectiveness of common job resources to buffer these effects among nurses in the United States. METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: We surveyed fr

Development and Validation of a Cardiovascular Disease Risk Prediction Model for the Japanese Working Population: The Japan Epidemiology Collaboration on Occupational Health Study.

AIMS: This study aimed to develop a cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk model using data from a large occupational cohort. METHODS: A risk prediction model was developed using the routine health checkup data of 96,117 Japanese employees (84.0% men) who were 30-64 years of age and had no CVD at baseline. Cox proportional hazards regression models were employed to develop a risk model for assessing the 10-year CVD risk. Measures of discrimination and calibration were used to assess the predictive performance of the model and internal validation was used to examine potential overfitting. RESULTS:

Risk factor analysis and risk prediction study of obesity in steelworkers: model development based on an occupational health examination cohort dataset.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is increasingly recognized as a grave public health concern globally. It is associated with prevalent diseases including coronary heart disease, fatty liver, type 2 diabetes, and dyslipidemia. Prior research has identified demographic, socioeconomic, lifestyle, and genetic factors as contributors to obesity. Nevertheless, the influence of occupational risk factors on obesity among workers remains under-explored. Investigating risk factors specific to steelworkers is crucial for early detection, prediction, and effective intervention, thereby safeguarding their health. METH

Occupational health risks of VOCs emitted from the working face of municipal solid waste landfill: Temporal variation and influencing factors.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission on the working face of a large sanitary landfill in northern China was characterized in a one-year long sampling campaign. A total of 67 VOCs with average annual concentration of 2903.01 μg/m3 were detected. Ethanol was the dominant species of detected VOCs, accounting for 76.4-82.3% of the total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) concentration. VOCs emission showed seasonal variation as the highest concentration was detected in summer and lowest appeared in winter. Furthermore, 50 VOCs identified were non-carcinogenic chemicals and 21 of them were ca

Environmental and occupational exposure to cadmium associated with male reproductive health risk: a systematic review and meta-analysis based on epidemiological evidence.

There is an abundance of epidemiological evidence and animal experiments concerning the correlation between cadmium exposure and adverse male reproductive health outcomes. However, the evidence remains inconclusive. We conducted a literature search from PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science over the past 3 decades. Pooled r and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were derived from Cd levels of the type of biological materials and different outcome indicators to address the large heterogeneity of existing literature. Cd was negatively correlated with semen parameters (r = - 0.122, 95% CI - 0.151 to - 0
