Recognizing bilateral sudden hearing loss as a sentinel sign of basilar artery occlusion: insights from endovascular case series.

OBJECTIVE: To improve early diagnosis of patients who have basilar artery occlusion (BAO) and to provide evidence for treatment decisions based on clinical characteristics, treatment strategies, and prognostic outcomes of cases of bilateral hearing loss as a prodromal symptom. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of six patients who had BAO with an initial symptom of hearing loss. This analysis encompassed demographic data, clinical symptoms, examination findings, treatment approaches, and prognostic outcomes. RESULTS: Six patients (mean age 62±16.5 years) presented with bilateral

Tobacco, but Neither Cannabis Smoking Nor Co-Drug Use, Is Associated With Hearing Loss in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2011 to 2012 and 2015 to 2016.

INTRODUCTION: A relationship between tobacco smoking and hearing loss has been reported; associations with cannabis smoking are unknown. In this cross-sectional population-based study, we examined relationships between hearing loss and smoking (tobacco, cannabis, or co-drug use). METHODS: We explored the relationship between hearing loss and smoking among 2705 participants [mean age = 39.41 (SE: 0.36) years] in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011 to 12; 2015 to 16). Smoking status was obtained via questionnaire; four mutually exclusive groups were defined: nonsmokers, c

Pediatric Jugular Bulb Anomalies: Management Insights From Two Cases.

Jugular bulb anomalies are rare but important causes of pediatric conductive hearing loss. These variants can disrupt ossicular mechanics or alter middle ear function and may persist despite tympanostomy tube placement. We report two cases: a five-year-old boy with unilateral conductive hearing loss due to high-riding bulb, managed conservatively, and an eight-year-old boy with persistent conductive hearing loss post-tympanostomy, in whom intraoperative hemorrhage occurred during middle ear exploration due to jugular bulb dehiscence.

Cochlear Otosclerosis and Secondary Hydrops (Ménière's Syndrome).

This article discusses a case of cochlear otosclerosis leading to secondary hydrops and near-complete hearing loss. Histopathological examination revealed advanced multifocal otosclerosis in both temporal bones, with specific focus on cochlear invasion and significant bone resorption. The severity of the case ruled out surgical intervention due to the risk of further hearing loss. The article emphasizes the challenges in managing otosclerosis-related hydrops and highlights the potential use of advanced imaging techniques for diagnosis. The study underscores the complexity of otosclerosis-induc

Cochlear implants and electrical brainstem stimulation in sensorineural hearing loss.

Cochlear implants and multichannel auditory brainstem implants enable patients with bilateral total or profound hearing loss to receive at least acoustic information. Both types of prosthesis are based on electrical stimulation of the auditory pathway. Different speech coding strategies and the number of electrodes used may influence the postoperative results. The preoperative evaluation of patients is of utmost importance. The cochlear implant is suitable for patients with hearing loss due to inner ear disorders, but who have functioning hearing nerve. Patients with a defect of the hearing ne

Agalsidase alpha and hearing in Fabry disease: data from the Fabry Outcome Survey.

Fabry disease is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder characterized by multi-organ dysfunction, including hearing loss - mainly sensorineural. The recent introduction of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) has resulted in improvements in renal and cardiac function, pain and quality of life. One study has also suggested small improvements in high-frequency hearing. In this paper, we study the effect of ERT on hearing in patients in the Europe-wide database - the Fabry Outcome Survey (FOS). Twenty-six patients in FOS had pure-tone audiometry performed up to 6 months before starting ERT with agals

[Category loudness scaling to evaluate sound perception in cochlear and retro-cochlear lesions].

Category loudness scaling was used to investigate the loudness perception of 31 patients with a cochlear hearing loss (Group 1) by comparing the results with those found in 15 patients with retro-cochlear hearing loss caused by an acoustic neuroma (Group 2). Narrow-band noise signals at four different frequencies (0.5 to 4.0 kHz) were used. In the cochlear hearing-impaired subjects the slopes of the level-loudness functions tended to increase with increasing hearing loss, indicating positive recruitment, whereas the much shallower slopes associated with retro-cochlear lesions were presumed to

Auditory brainstem responses in leptomeningeal metastatic spread. Presentation of 2 cases.

Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were recorded in 2 patients with hearing loss caused by leptomeningeal metastatic spread. These recordings showed similar characteristic findings. The absolute latencies of wave V and interwave latencies I-V were exceedingly increased. Definite effects on the wave morphology and latency of wave V were observed with the use of high repetition rates. It is surmised that the hearing loss caused by leptomeningeal metastatic spread is mainly an effect on the auditory nerve and/or the cochlear nucleus. ABR examination is of clinical value in detecting functional a

Promotion of Cx26 mutants located in TM4 region for membrane translocation successfully rescued hearing loss.

Rationale: The GJB2 gene, which encodes connexin 26 (Cx26), is recognized as the leading cause of non-syndromic hereditary hearing loss. In clinical settings, a total of 131 Cx26 mutations have been identified in association with hearing loss. Certain Cx26 mutants display normal structural and functional properties but fail to translocate to the plasma membrane. Enhancing the membrane localization of these mutants may provide a promising strategy for rescuing hearing loss and hair cell degeneration. Methods: This study investigated the membrane localization of Cx26 using in vitro cell lines, c

Comparison of nursing home hearing handicap index with audiological findings: a presbycusis study.

Hearing evaluation usually includes hearing threshold assessment, middle ear function, and word recognition tests that lead to an accurate result of peripheral and central auditory system. However, they have some limitations because they cannot fully encompass all aspects of hearing loss problems. Using self-assessment approach, via a questionnaire or telephone survey, is one of the easiest methods to study hearing loss in population. In this research, 60 nursing home residents (27 females and 33 males) ranging from 55 to 85 years with a mean age of 71 ± 5.5 were studied via completing self-as

Steroid responsive fluctuating sensorineural hearing loss due to juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma involving the cerebellopontine angle.

Tumors of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) are common and represent up to 10% of all intracranial tumors. Rarely, intrinsic brainstem tumors can involve the CPA and present with auditory symptoms typical of CPA tumors such as hearing loss, vertigo and tinnitus. We report on a rare case of an intrinsic brainstem neoplasm presenting with steroid responsive fluctuating sensorineural hearing loss in a child. The patient initially presented with an acute worsening of an unilateral sensorineural hearing loss, without additional symptoms, that responded to oral steroids. Otoacoustic emission testing

Age-related changes in cochlear and brainstem auditory functions in Fischer 344 rats.

Auditory function in Fischer 344 (F344) and Long Evans (LE) rats was monitored during their lifespan by evaluating hair cell loss, middle-ear compliance and the recording of otoacoustic emissions and auditory brainstem responses. The results revealed a faster deterioration of hearing function in F344 rats compared with LE rats, resulting in larger hearing threshold shifts, a decrease in the latency and amplitude of click-evoked auditory brainstem responses, diminution of the distortion product otoacoustic emissions and a decrease in middle-ear compliance. However, hair cell loss, observed only

Analysis of Saccular Function With Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential Test in Meniere's Disease.

Meniere's disease is the disorder of inner ear characterized by vertigo, tinnitus and sensorineural hearing loss. The vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) test could be useful in the analysis of saccular function, and diagnosis of Meniere's disease. In this study, we've analyzed the saccular function, using VEMP test in different groups of Meniere's disease. Patients were categorized as possible, probable or definite Meniere's disease groups according to the guideline of American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. The exclusion criteria were neuromuscular system diseases,

Relative importance of monaural sound deprivation and bilateral significant hearing loss in predicting cochlear implantation outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Making evidence-based recommendations to prospective unilateral cochlear implant recipients on the potential benefits of implanting one or the other ear is challenging for cochlear implant teams. This particularly occurs in cases where a hearing aid has only been used in one ear for many years (referred to here as the "hearing ear"), and the contralateral ear has, in essence, been sound-deprived. In such cases, research to date is inconclusive, and little anecdotal evidence exists to inform the debate and support best clinical practice. DESIGN: Retrospective data on speech recogni

Predictors of hearing loss in school entrants in a developing country.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is a prevalent and significant disability that impairs functional development and educational attainment of school children in developing countries. Lack of a simple and practical screening protocol often deters routine and systematic hearing screening at school entry. AIM: To identify predictors of hearing loss for a practical screening model in school-aged children. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Community-based, retrospective case-control study of school entrants in an inner city. METHODS: Results from the audiologic and non-audiologic examination of 50 hearing impaired ch

Cochlear Implantation in Sickle Cell Disease: A Systematic Review of Feasibility and Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is associated with systemic complications, including sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) from microvascular occlusion and chronic inflammation. Although reports link SCD to higher rates of SNHL, current evidence is limited by small sample size, varied audiologic methods, and lack of standardized screening. This systematic review summarizes available literature on SNHL and cochlear implantation (CI) in SCD. METHODS: A literature search of PubMed MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and CINAHL identified 79 citations. After removal of duplicates, 35 rec

Is the posterior cingulate cortex an on-off switch for tinnitus?: A comparison between hearing loss subjects with and without tinnitus.

As the human brain works in a Bayesian manner to minimize uncertainty toward external stimuli, the deafferented brain may generate tinnitus in an attempt to fill in missing auditory information, e.g. due to hearing loss. However, not everybody with hearing loss develops tinnitus. Understanding the differences between people with hearing loss who develop tinnitus versus those who do not offers a unique opportunity to unravel critical brain areas involved in the generation of a phantom sound. In this study, we compared resting-state quantitative electroencephalography between hearing loss patien

Relationship between hearing impairment and dementia and cognitive function: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: There is a substantial body of observational research indicating an association between hearing impairment and dementia, yet the causal relationship and underlying mechanisms remain uncertain. This study aims to investigate the causal relationship between hearing impairment and its subtypes with dementia and cognitive function using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. METHODS: We performed two-sample MR analysis to examine the causal effects of hearing impairment and its subtypes, including conductive and sensorineural hearing loss (CSHL), conductive hearing loss (CH
