The pulmonary artery wedge pressure was increased because of the development of a haemothorax. After drainage of the haemothorax, the pulmonary artery wedge pressure was found to be less than that required to maintain an effective cardiac output and a rapid infusion of blood was required.

Twenty cases of ruptured ectopic pregnancy and two cases of haemothorax which have been given autotransfusion by a simple technique are reported. No deaths or complications occurred. The advantages of autotransfusion particularly in circumstances where laboratory facilities are minimal are discussed. Haemoglobin levels before and after transfusion and other investigations are recorded.

We describe a patient with acute on chronic respiratory failure after a cardiac arrest who was cannulated to venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The patient developed right-sided interstitial emphysema with air leak and left-sided hemothorax with secondary atelectasis. Decortication was performed in 32 persons with penetrating war injuries to the chest. The indications were acute and chronic post-traumatic empyema, incompletely evacuated hemothorax, chylothorax, and chronic pneumothorax.
