Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a common hip disorder in pediatrics; about one in 100 newborns has it due to dysplasia and one to two per 1000 have it due to dislocation. Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in humans is a common condition that is associated with hip pain, functional limitations, and secondary osteoarthritis (OA). Surgical treatment of DDH has improved in the last decade, allowing excellent outcomes at short- and mid-term follow-up. Still, the etiology, mechanobiology, and pathology underlying this disease are not well understood. This perspective study analyzes the long-term outcomes of cementless anatomic total hip arthroplasty (THA) in patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Between 1990 and 2004, 100 ABG total hip prosthesis were implanted in 87 patients with DDH. The average follow-up was 9 years (range 4-18 years). In this study, risk factors of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) were evaluated. History, clinical examination and risk factors for DDH of the babies were recorded. The paper presents results of ultrasonography of the hip joint of 56 newborns with pathology of the hip joint detected by a clinical and ultrasonic screening, and 56 children aged from 1 through 6 months with dysplasia of the hip joint and a congenital hip dislocation. The ultrasonic examination gives an exact evaluation of the development of the joint. Measures of treatment were chosen with special reference to the patient's age and severity of the pathology. The terms of treatment depended on the age of the child and severity of the disease.
