Understanding maternity care providers' use of data in Southern Tanzania.

INTRODUCTION: Health information management system data is collected for national planning and evaluation but is rarely used for healthcare improvements at subnational or facility-level in low-and-middle-income countries. Research suggests that perceived data quality and lack of feedback are contributing factors. We aimed to understand maternity care providers' perceptions of data and how they use it, with a view to co-design interventions to improve data quality and use. METHODS: We based our research on constructivist grounded theory. We conducted 14 in-depth interviews, two focus group dis

Patterns of inpatient care for newly diagnosed immune thrombocytopenia in US children's hospitals.

OBJECTIVE: Although recent evidence-based guidelines for the management of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) recommend a conservative, observation-based approach for the majority of patients with newly diagnosed pediatric ITP, current practice patterns are unknown. This study used the Pediatric Health Information System database to examine patterns of inpatient care in newly diagnosed ITP in freestanding US children's hospitals and to examine geographic differences in care. METHODS: Data were extracted from Pediatric Health Information System for all newly diagnosed ITP admissions aged 1 to 18 ye

A multicenter COVID-19 database from four waves in the south metropolitan area of Barcelona, Catalonia.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been characterized by a series of epidemiological waves, each defined by distinct viral variants and shifting transmission dynamics. Examining these waves is essential for understanding temporal changes in case incidence, hospitalization rates, mortality patterns, and healthcare system capacity. In this work, we present a database from a multicenter COVID-19 study including data of 5813 patients from four waves of the pandemic in the south metropolitan area of Barcelona. The database contains information collected at hospital admission and during patient follow-up whi

Minnesota Data Sharing May Be Model For Near-Real-Time Tracking Of Drug Overdose Hospital And ED Trends.

The drug overdose epidemic in the US necessitates detailed and timely data to inform public health responses. In this article we describe how an electronic health record (EHR) data-sharing collaboration across health systems in Minnesota that was developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic was adapted to monitor trends in substance use-related hospital and emergency department (ED) visits. We found large increases in methamphetamine- and opioid-involved hospital and ED visits. Throughout the study period, Native American, Black, and multiple-race people experienced the highest rates of drug

"My Hands Are Tied": Abortion Restrictions and Providers' Experiences in Religious and Nonreligious Health Care Systems.

CONTEXT: Abortion is generally prohibited in Catholic hospitals, but less is known about abortion restrictions in other religiously affiliated health care facilities. As religiously affiliated health systems expand in the United States, it is important to understand how religious restrictions affect the practices of providers who treat pregnant patients. METHODS: From September 2016 to May 2018, in-depth interviews were conducted with 31 key informants (clinical providers, ethicists, chaplains and health system administrators) with experience working in secular, Protestant or Catholic health

Can we know the immunization status of healthcare workers? Results of a feasibility study in hospital trusts, England, 2008.

In England, there is no surveillance system for vaccines offered to healthcare workers apart from that in place annually for the seasonal influenza vaccine. To inform the feasibility of a general vaccine uptake surveillance system and to understand which policies are currently in place, we conducted a survey in the 162 National Health Service Foundation and Acute Hospital trusts in England, by submitting a questionnaire to their occupational health departments on immunization policies and methods of storing vaccine uptake data. In total, 104 hospital trusts (64.2%) responded. All responders of

Synthetic Medical Document Generation Pipeline (MedDocSynth) for Optical Character Recognition: Development and Validation Study on Korean Clinical Documents.

BACKGROUND: The development of structured optical character recognition (OCR) systems for Korean medical documents is hindered by strict privacy regulations that limit access to real clinical data. Existing synthetic document frameworks are primarily designed for generic layouts and Western languages, and fail to capture the complex formatting, bilingual terminology, and hierarchical field semantics required for clinical OCR and document-understanding tasks in hospital environments. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and validate a privacy-preserving, template-driven pipeline for generati

A picture of health: determining the core population served by an urban NHS hospital trust and understanding the key health needs.

BACKGROUND: NHS hospitals do not have clearly defined geographic populations to whom they provide care, with patients able to attend any hospital. Identifying a core population for a hospital trust, particularly those in urban areas where there are multiple providers and high population churn, is essential to understanding local key health needs especially given the move to integrated care systems. This can enable effective planning and delivery of preventive interventions and community engagement, rather than simply treating those presenting to services. In this article we describe a practica

Afterbirth support provision for women following a traumatic/distressing birth: Survey of NHS hospital trusts in England.

OBJECTIVE: Despite recommendations within postnatal care guidelines, many National Health Service (NHS) hospital trusts in the UK provide an afterbirth, debriefing type service for women who have had a traumatic/distressing birth. Currently there are a lack of insights into what, how, and when this support is provided. The aim of this study was to explore afterbirth provision for women who have had a traumatic/distressing birth in NHS hospital trusts in England. DESIGN: An online survey comprising forced choice and open text comments was disseminated via direct email and social media to NHS h
