Prolidase deficiency is a rare, inherited disorder characterized by ulceration of the skin, mental retardation, and massive urinary excretion of imidodipeptides. The synergistic effects of iron overload and ethanol on the liver of mice were studied over a period of 46 weeks. In the study of tibial dyschondroplasia, scientists have for a long time thought that an altered extracellular matrix might be involved in the etiology of the disease. The collagen content and the relative distribution of collagen Types I and III were measured in umbilical cords from newborns with congenital dislocation of the hip (CDH) and healthy controls. The total content of collagen per mg dry tissue tended to be reduced. In newborns with CDH the collagen III/I ratio was higher than in the controls. If generalized, these alterations in collagen metabolism may explain the joint hypermobility seen in CDH. It is suggested that the redistribution of collagen Types III and I during normal fetal development and early infancy may be delayed in CDH.

Twelve patients with malignant hypercalcemia were treated with amino-hydroxypropylidene-diphosphonate (APD), a potent inhibitor of osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. It is established that the most informative blood biochemical indicators of destructive process in patients with onycholysis are to be considered concentration of oxiproline in blood. The changing of ratio of fractions oxiproline, balance between concentration of enzymes of antioxidant defense and metalloproteinase and concentration of hemoglobin in blood make it possible to diagnose the mixed type of hypoxemia which is a possible cause of destruction of kerato-hyaline tissue in patients with onycholysis.
