Stress to stability: Sense of coherence as a buffer against pandemic-related psychological distress.

BACKGROUND: Identifying protective factors in mental health-related outcomes is crucial, offering insights into the vulnerabilities and strengths individuals harness against psychological distress. There has been limited focus on exploring complex mediation and moderation models, which can uncover the relationships between stressors, protective factors and wellbeing. AIM: This study investigated the interrelationship between perceived stress, sense of coherence (SOC), and psychological distress. SETTING: South African university students (N = 322) completed the Perceived Stress Scale, Sense

Cluster-based psychological phenotyping and differences in anxiety treatment outcomes.

The identification of markers of mental health illness treatment response and susceptibility using personalized medicine has been elusive. In the context of psychological treatment for anxiety, we conducted two studies to identify psychological phenotypes with distinct characteristics related to: psychological intervention modalities (mindfulness training/awareness), mechanism of action (worry), and clinical outcome (generalized anxiety disorder scale scores). We also examined whether phenotype membership interacted with treatment response (Study 1) and mental health illness diagnosis (Studies

Screening suicide-related ideation using the Kessler psychological distress scale-10: an indirect predictive model among university students.

BACKGROUND: This study developed a predictive model for suicide-related ideation among university students using three items from the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale-10: hopelessness, depressed mood, and worthlessness. METHODS: Data collected between 2021 and 2023 from 5642 first-year students at Hokkaido University were used for model development, with a temporal validation cohort of 1803 students surveyed in 2024. Suicide-related ideation was defined as a score of at least 1 on item 9 of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, which assesses thoughts of self-harm and suicide. RESULTS: Log

Factors associated with post-traumatic growth in severe COVID-19 patients discharged from intensive care: the influence of near-death experiences.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU) hospitalizations confront individuals with imminent death and may cause post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In contrast, traumatic events may lead to positive psychological outcomes such as post-traumatic growth. As consciousness is altered, near-death experiences (NDEs) may occur and be associated with post-traumatic growth. Our cross-sectional, monocentric study aims to determine the factors associated with post-traumatic growth in severe, ICU-discharged COVID-19 patients, including the influence of NDEs and memory characteristics. We recruited participants three

Okweraliikirira and Okwenyamira: Idioms of Psychological Distress Among People Living with HIV in Rakai, Uganda.

Health and illness experiences are positioned within social and cultural contexts. Understanding the mental health and psychological distress of people living with HIV in highly affected communities is critical to addressing their needs and to ensure programming and interventions are targeted and appropriate. Grounded in the ethnomedical theoretical perspective, we conducted qualitative interviews to understand the experience and expression of psychological distress by people living with HIV in Rakai, Uganda. Participants included adults living with HIV (n = 20), health workers (counselors, pe

The association between alexithymia and internet addiction disorder in a large sample of Chinese undergraduates: the role of sexual assault experiences.

OBJECTIVE: While a positive association between alexithymia and Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) has been established, previous studies are often limited by small sample sizes, lack of representative populations, and insufficient attention to intra-group differences, such as the impact of experiences like sexual assault. METHOD: Anonymous questionnaires assessing alexithymia and IAD were distributed to approximately 11,000 university students across six institutions in Southwest China, resulting in 7,890 valid responses. In addition to measures of alexithymia and IAD, data were also collecte

Moderators and predictors in a parent hearing aid management eHealth program.

OBJECTIVE: Consistent hearing aid use is essential for spoken language development of children who are hard of hearing. A recent randomised controlled trial of an eHealth hearing aid management education program found the intervention increased knowledge, perceptions, confidence, and device monitoring among parents of young children. Yet, it is not known which variables can be a point of emphasis to improve treatment outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate potential moderators and predictors in the eHealth program. DESIGN: Randomised controlled trial. STUDY SAMPLE: Parents (N

Rural Mexican-American adolescent sexual risk behavior.

CONTEXT: There is a need for community-based, culturally sensitive, cognitive-behavioral interventions to reduce sexual risk behavior among minority adolescents. Studies of adolescent risk and protective behaviors have focused on identifying modifiable psychosocial variables that predict differential outcomes for subsequent intervention efforts. Research has been scarce in studies of rural minority adolescent women. PURPOSE: To examine the protective and risk behaviors of these rural Mexican-American adolescent women and their relationship to physical or sexual abuse. METHODS: Mexican-Americ

What kills everyone, gives a high for some-Recreational Snake Envenomation.

There are multiple reports of recreational snake envenomation describing psychotropic effects in absence of any adverse effects. This is in contradiction with known effects of snake venom. We report a case of a young male who subjected himself to repeated envenomation by a snake purported to be 'Indian Cobra' and experienced a 'high'. However, a direct identification of snake revealed it was a benign 'Rat snake'. We attempt to explain the reported psychological effects as a result of high expectation of rewarding experience, strong suggestion, personality traits and most importantly the danger

Unusual suicidal smothering by means of multiple loops of adhesive gummed tape.

In suicidal asphyxia smothering is very rare, especially when caused by winding strips of adhesive tape around the head to cover the nose and mouth. The authors report a very unusual case in which the deceased, a 66-year-old man, was found with two strips of tape wound around his head: the first, more superficial tape was wrapped six times and the second was wrapped nine times. Only integration of the crime scene data with those of the autopsy and the patient's psychological profile enabled identification of the event as suicide.

Epidemiology of suicidal behavior among Korean adolescents.

The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of suicidal behaviors and their relation to background characteristics, social integration, academic stress, psychological distress, and substance use in a stratified random sample of 9886 high school students in Korea. In a multiple logistic regression, we found that depression was the strongest predictor of suicidal behaviors. The other factors significantly associated with suicidal behaviors were gender, academic stress, hostility and substance use. These results indicate that early identification of risk factors for suicidal behavior

Different groups, different threats: a multi-threat approach to the experience of stereotype threats.

Two studies demonstrated that different negatively stereotyped groups are at risk for distinct forms of stereotype threats. The Multi-Threat Framework articulates six distinct stereotype threats and the unique constellations of variables (e.g., group identification, stereotype endorsement) that elicit each stereotype threat. Previous research suggests that different negatively stereotyped groups systematically vary across these stereotype threat elicitors; a pilot study confirms these differences. Across two studies, groups that tend to elicit low stereotype endorsement (religion, race/ethnici

Alcohol and risky sex in athletes and nonathletes: what roles do sex motives play?

OBJECTIVE: Studies indicate greater sexual risk-taking behaviors and alcohol use in student-athletes compared with nonathletes, particularly in college samples. Although research has documented an association between drinking and risky sex, studies have not examined the role of sex motives in predicting risky sex in athletes. The purpose of the current study was to extend previous research on athletes' risk-taking behaviors by examining incoming college student-athletes and nonathletes' alcohol consumption, risky sexual behavior, and sex motives. METHOD: Participants included 2,123 (58.9% fem

Gender dysphoria and gender change in chromosomal females with congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

This article reviews the literature on studies and case reports on gender identity and gender identity problems, gender dysphoria, and gender change in chromosomal females with congenital adrenal hyperplasia, raised male or female. The large majority (94.8%) of the patients raised female (N= 250) later developed a gender identity as girls and women and did not feel gender dysphoric. But 13 (5.2%) patients had serious problems with their gender identity. This percentage is higher than the prevalence of female-to-male transsexuals in the general population of chromosomal females. Among patients

Quality of life and psychological dysfunction in traumatized and nontraumatized patients with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES).

OBJECTIVES: Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) have the appearance of epileptic seizures, yet show no epileptiform discharges in the brain. The quality of life (QOL) in patients with PNES is reportedly low and trauma eems to be a relevant risk factor. The objective of this study was to examine the difference between measures of (epilepsy-specific) QOL (Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory; QOLIE-31p) and psychological dysfunction (trauma symptom inventory; TSI) between patients with diagnosed PNES with self-reported trauma and those without self-reported trauma. METHODS: Patients whose

Toward a Typology of Patients With Head and Neck Cancer: Biopsychosocial Profiles Predicting Longitudinal Quality of Life.

BACKGROUND: Quality of life (QoL) in head and neck cancer (HNC) is influenced by complex biopsychosocial factors, yet few longitudinal studies have examined these relationships immediately post-treatment. METHODS: In this prospective study, 232 patients newly diagnosed with primary HNC completed psychometric assessments, clinical interviews, and medical chart reviews at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months. QoL was measured using the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-HNC module. A two-step cluster analysis identified distinct biopsychosocial subgroups, and mixed ANOVA tested QoL trajectories a
