Early rise in intraocular pressure after ammonia burns.

Ammonia is now frequently used in armed robberies by assailants, who possibly misguidedly imagine that it is an easy and safe method of temporarily incapacitating their victim. Nevertheless, two case histories are presented to illustrate the early rise of intraocular pressure which may occur after excessive exposure of the eye to ammonia. The clinical appearance in many respects mimicked that of acute-angle closure glaucoma; the raised intraocular pressure, corneal oedema, and an oval semi-dilated fixed pupil being typical.

Ordered onset of regional desynchronization and a transition in movement-class discriminability during cue-paced motor imagery.

Motor imagery recruits a distributed sensorimotor network, yet the order in which its regions are engaged has not been tested statistically within the healthy brain, and the interval in which information about the imagined movement appears remains unidentified. Early post-cue classification peaks have been attributed to visually induced orienting rather than to imagery, an inference drawn from a condition contrast rather than direct measurement. Two independent public datasets were analysed under a matched pipeline of causal filtering, ocular regression and current source density: Weibo2014 as

Similar eye movements in aphantasia and visualizers during mental map exploration.

During visual mental imagery, our eyes tend to reproduce patterns of movement similar to those observed in visual perception, even in the absence of external stimuli. However, imagery vividness varies along a spectrum, with congenital aphantasia at the lower extreme, where individuals report a reduced or absent ability to visualize voluntarily. Nevertheless, they can typically state from memory that Bordeaux is to the left of Paris on a map of France while denying having conjured any mental image. What cognitive mechanisms underlie this dissociation? Some theories suggest aphantasia stems from

Prediction and updating abilities in motor imagery during the timed Up and Go task in young and older adults.

OBJECTIVES: Aging is associated with alterations in internal representations of action, potential mediators of fall risk, often examined through motor imagery. It is unclear, however, whether age affects temporal aspects of imagery and differentially impacts the predictive versus updating components of internal models. This study investigated age-related differences in motor imagery during the Timed Up and Go (TUG) task and examined sensorimotor and neuropsychological factors influencing performance. METHODS: 36 young adults (22-42 years) and 52 older adults (66-86 years) performed a series o

Desire thinking as a cognitive mechanism of yearning after bereavement.

BACKGROUND: Yearning is the hallmark of grief and prolonged grief disorder, but its psychological underpinnings are poorly understood. We aimed to address this by building on the phenomenological similarities with craving and investigating the role of desire thinking, a voluntary cognitive process central to activating craving. OBJECTIVE: Determining the factorial and psychometric properties of the Oxford Grief Desire Thinking scale (OG-DT) and testing whether desire thinking dimensions prospectively predict proximity-seeking, and whether this association is mediated by subsequent yearning.

A neuroadaptive interface shows intentional control alters the experience of time.

A reliable experience of time is critical for perception and action in the present, for accurately remembering our past, and for successfully planning a future. Theories of time perception commonly assume a central mechanism keeps time by providing a relatively independent, internal clock. Recent work, however, shows imaginary self-movements alter subjective time, suggesting a critical role for action in temporal cognition. To test the hypothesis that time perception derives from the relationship between action and perception, we designed a neuroadaptive interface operating on imaginary moveme

Antagonistic role of the BTB-zinc finger transcription factors Chinmo and Broad-Complex in the juvenile/pupal transition and in growth control.

During development, the growing organism transits through a series of temporally regulated morphological stages to generate the adult form. In humans, for example, development progresses from childhood through to puberty and then to adulthood, when sexual maturity is attained. Similarly, in holometabolous insects, immature juveniles transit to the adult form through an intermediate pupal stage when larval tissues are eliminated and the imaginal progenitor cells form the adult structures. The identity of the larval, pupal, and adult stages depends on the sequential expression of the transcripti

The Bright and Dark Side of Gossip for Cooperation in Groups.

Recent experimental studies seem to concur that gossip is good for groups by showing that gossip stems from prosocial motives to protect group members from non-cooperators. Thus, these studies emphasize the "bright" side of gossip. However, scattered studies point to detrimental outcomes of gossip for individuals and groups, arguing that a "dark" side of gossip exists. To understand the implications of gossip for cooperation in groups, both the dark and bright side of gossip must be illuminated. We investigated both sides of gossip in two scenario studies. In Study 1 (N = 108), we confronted p

Partners' depressive symptoms moderate the effects of expressive suppression.

Suppressing emotional expressions can hide one's needs from relationship partners and thus prevent partners from providing support. Nevertheless, suppressing expressions may help people maintain more favorable evaluations of partners who are ultimately unsupportive because people may attribute a lack of support to partners being unaware of their needs. Thus, given that depressive symptoms reduce provisions of support, people with partners experiencing depressive symptoms may remain more satisfied to the extent that they previously suppressed emotional expressions. We tested these ideas in 1 ex

Understanding the importance of "symbolic interaction stigma": How expectations about the reactions of others adds to the burden of mental illness stigma.

OBJECTIVE: Important components of stigma include imagining what others might think of a stigmatized status, anticipating what might transpire in an interaction with others, and rehearsing what one might do if something untoward occurs. These imagined relations are here called symbolic interaction stigma and can have an impact even if the internalization of negative stereotypes fails to occur. Concepts and measures that capture symbolic interaction stigma are introduced, and a preliminary assessment of their impact is provided. METHOD: Four self-report measures of symbolic interaction stigma

Early intervention may prevent the development of posttraumatic stress disorder: a randomized pilot civilian study with modified prolonged exposure.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a major public health concern with long-term sequelae. There are no accepted interventions delivered in the immediate aftermath of trauma. This study tested an early intervention aimed at modifying the memory to prevent the development of PTSD before memory consolidation. METHODS: Patients (n = 137) were randomly assigned to receive three sessions of an early intervention beginning in the emergency department compared with an assessment only control group. Posttraumatic stress reactions (PTSR) were assessed at 4 and 12 weeks postinjury and d

Facial reconstruction of an 11-year-old female resident of 430 BC Athens.

Although modern standards of ideal proportions and facial esthetics are based mostly on observations of human faces as depicted in Classical Greek masterpieces of art, the real faces of ordinary ancient Greeks have, until now, remained elusive and subject to the imagination. Objective forensic techniques of facial reconstruction have never been applied before, because human skeletal material from Classical Greece has been extremely scarce, since most decent burials of that time required cremation. Here, the authors show stage by stage the facial reconstruction of an 11-year-old girl whose skul…

Barriers to prostate cancer screening: psychological aspects and descriptive variables---is there a correlation?

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate psychological and demographic aspects of men who received DRE during the PCa screening in an outpatient clinical setting. METHODS: Patients (345) who underwent DRE for the first time from February 2006 to December 2007 were evaluated for their psychological reactions and feelings after the examination. RESULTS: The average age of the patients was 52.8 years (25 - 85 years); 40.94% had felt fear (examination fear 15.94%, and diagnosis fear 25%), 26.45% shame and 48.26% indicated they were not thinking about anything. There was no correlation between age, educational lev

Exploring brain activity differences in functional constipation using fNIRS: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Functional constipation (FCon) involves central nervous system dysregulation, particularly in brain regions responsible for visceral sensation, emotional processing, and autonomic control. Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), we examined brain activity alterations in FCon patients to elucidate brain-gut interactions. METHOD: Patients with constipation meeting Rome IV criteria were recruited from Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, while healthy controls were enrolled from the local community. The cortical regions of interest (ROIs) included the prefrontal cortex (PFC), dors

Salinity-tolerant larvae of mosquito vectors in the tropical coast of Jaffna, Sri Lanka and the effect of salinity on the toxicity of Bacillus thuringiensis to Aedes aegypti larvae.

BACKGROUND: Dengue, chikungunya, malaria, filariasis and Japanese encephalitis are common mosquito-borne diseases endemic to Sri Lanka. Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, the major vectors of dengue, were recently shown to undergo pre-imaginal development in brackish water bodies in the island. A limited survey of selected coastal localities of the Jaffna district in northern Sri Lanka was carried out to identify mosquito species undergoing pre-imaginal development in brackish and saline waters. The effect of salinity on the toxicity of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis larvicide to Ae. aegy

Serial Lung Ultrasonography to Monitor Patient With Diffuse Alveolar Hemorhage.

Diffuse alveolar haemorrhage (DAH) leads to acute respiratory failure. This is why it requires rapid diagnosis and implementation of appropriate treatment. The standard diagnosis of a patient with DAH includes laboratory tests, diagnostic imagining (X-ray of the chest, high-resolution computed tomography), and bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage. We present a description of 2 patients diagnosed with systemic connective tissue disease and DAH, monitored with the help of lung ultrasound. To our knowledge, this is the first description of the use of lung ultrasound in DAH in adult patients.

Engagement: a concept and some possible uses.

This article examines how the term ENGAGEMENT has been used in various literatures. The construct of engagement is found to have advantages over other similar constructs in that it portrays degrees of involvement, it readily assumes the point of view of the person with disability, and it conveys involvement in interpersonal relationships as well in ongoing imagined or directly experienced activities. The article concludes with a set of points that can help create a framework for incorporating the construct of engagement into clinical practice, including the creation of climates for fostering e
