The carotid body (CB) is a small neural crest-derived chemosensory organ that detects the chemical composition of the arterial blood and responds to its changes by regulating breathing. The effects of acute nitrite treatment on the CB morphology in rats were examined by morphometry. The effect of silica gel on the efficiency enhancement of Zn(0) for the reduction of Cr(VI) and removal of total chromium was investigated in this study. The batch experiment was carried at 4 ≤ pH ≤ 10 with 50 μM initial Cr(VI) concentration, and mass loading of 0-40 g/L for silica gel and 0-8 g/L for Zn(0). A method for the rapid determination of the oxidation rate of naturally occurring pyrite (FeS(2)) samples is presented. The progress of the oxidation reaction was followed by measurement of the concentration of total dissolved iron using flow injection analysis. Iron was determined using UV-vis detection after reaction with the colorimetric reagent 5-sulfosalicylic acid in the presence of ammonia. A fast and efficient synthesis of N(alpha)-protected thiopeptide esters from the corresponding peptide esters using P(2)S(5) as thionating agent assisted by ultrasonication has been described.
