Association of feeding patterns in infancy with later autism symptoms and neurodevelopment: a national multicentre survey.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to compare differences in infant feeding patterns (breastfeeding and complementary food supplementation) between children with the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and typically developing (TD) children through a multicentre study. The relationship between these patterns and later core symptoms and neurodevelopment in children with ASD was also investigated. METHODS: We analysed breastfeeding and complementary feeding patterns in 1389 children with ASD and 1190 TD children. The Children Neuropsychological and Behavior Scale-Revision 2016 (CNBS-R2016) was used to assess neur

The enteric DNA virome differs in infants at risk for atopic disease.

Atopic disease prevalence, including atopic dermatitis, food allergy, asthma, and allergic rhinitis, has risen dramatically in industrialized countries. Traditional, single family farming lifestyles protect against atopic disease, but the mechanisms are incompletely understood. While there are established epidemiologic connections between childhood respiratory viral infections and the infant gut bacterial microbiome with allergic disease development, the influence of the early enteric virome on atopic disease development is unknown. We analyzed the enteric virome in 131 infants from high-atopy

Infant gut microbiota is protective against cow's milk allergy in mice despite immature ileal T-cell response.

Faecal microbiota of healthy infant displays a large abundance of Bifidobacterium spp. and Bacteroides spp. Although some studies have reported an association between these two genera and allergy, these findings remain a subject of debate. Using a gnotobiotic mouse model of cow's milk allergy, we investigated the impact of an infant gut microbiota – mainly composed of Bifidobacterium and Bacteroides spp. – on immune activation and allergic manifestations. The transplanted microbiota failed to restore an ileal T-cell response similar to the one observed in conventional mice. This may be due to

Postprandial metabolic response of breast-fed infants and infants fed lactose-free vs regular infant formula: A randomized controlled trial.

Lactose intolerance is a major concern driving the growth of lactose-free foods including lactose-free infant formula. It is unknown what the metabolic consequence is of consumption of a formula where lactose has been replaced with corn syrup solids (CSS). Here, a randomized double-blinded intervention study was conducted where exclusively formula-fed infants were fed formula containing either lactose or CSS-based infant formula and compared with an equal number of exclusively breast-fed infants. Plasma metabolites and insulin were measured at baseline, 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 min after feeding

Non-organic failure to thrive: a developmental perspective.

Like other segments of the child's development, eating behavior follows a sequential pattern. To understand the infant's or child's feeding problems which can lead to failure to thrive or dwarfism we propose that a child's progression be studied through three stages of development: homeostasis, attachment and separation-individuation. Specific feeding problems can arise at each of these stages of development and consequently impede the child's weight gain. During the period of homeostasis the infant learns to regulate himself, to suck, to swallow and to time the onset and termination of feedin

Biomarkers of Development of Immunity and Allergic Diseases in Farming and Non-farming Lifestyle Infants: Design, Methods and 1 Year Outcomes in the "Zooming in to Old Order Mennonites" Birth Cohort Study.

Traditional farming lifestyle has been shown to be protective against asthma and allergic diseases. The individual factors that appear to be associated with this "farm-life effect" include consumption of unpasteurized farm milk and exposure to farm animals and stables. However, the biomarkers of the protective immunity and those associated with early development of allergic diseases in infancy remain unclear. The "Zooming in to Old Order Mennonites (ZOOM)" study was designed to assess the differences in the lifestyle and the development of the microbiome, systemic and mucosal immunity between

The natural history and clinical predictors of egg allergy in the first 2 years of life: a prospective, population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of data examining the natural history of and risk factors for egg allergy persistence, the most common IgE-mediated food allergy in infants. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the natural history of egg allergy and identify clinical predictors for persistent egg allergy in a population-based cohort. METHODS: The HealthNuts study is a prospective, population-based cohort study of 5276 infants who underwent skin prick tests to 4 allergens, including egg. Infants with a detectable wheal were offered hospital-based oral food challenges (OFCs) to egg, irrespective of ski

Shotgun Metagenomics Reveals Skin Microbiome Composition and Function in Infant Atopic Disease.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD), food sensitization (FS), and food allergy (FA) frequently co-occur in infancy, but the factors underlying distinct atopic phenotypes remain unclear. Although FLG null mutations are major genetic risk factors for AD, they explain only part of disease heritability, suggesting a potential role for the skin microbiome. This study examined how early-life skin microbiome composition and its interaction with host genetics contribute to distinct atopic phenotypes in infancy. METHODS: We analyzed > 1000 skin swabs from 429 infants in the VITALITY cohort using deep s

A case of ileal caecum intussusception mimicking rectal prolapse in a 4-month-old female infant.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ilea caecum Intussusception protruding to the level of anus is a rare manifestation and potentially serious condition in infants. CASE PRESENTATION: A four-month-old infant presented with a one-day history of non-projectile vomiting, three episodes, food contents, worsened by feeding, accompanied by intermittent low-grade fever, and one instance of passing black tarry stool. After outpatient treatment, the infant showed improvement for three days, but later the mother noticed a protruding, self-reducing anal mass, hence the suspected rectal prolapse, which was the

Ventricular Tachycardia in an Infant Without Congenital Anomaly: A Case Report.

Ventricular tachycardia (VT) is a serious form of arrhythmia that can be life-threatening; that's why diagnosis and treatment are very important in order to avoid serious complications. We are reporting this case of VT which is a rare entity, especially, in healthy infants. This infant, without cardiac pathology known from birth, presented with poor food intake and grunting with hepatomegaly on clinical examination, and a heartbeat at 200/ min. The electrocardiogram (ECG) showed wide QRS complex tachycardia, and the echocardiogram showed a dilated and hypokinetic cardiomyopathy. The clinical s

Focus on infantile colic.

UNLABELLED: Infantile colic is a widespread clinical condition in the first 3 months of life, which is easily recognized, but incompletely understood and difficult to solve. The available evidence suggests that infantile colic might have several independent causes. The medical hypotheses include food hypersensitivity or allergy, immaturity of gut function and dysmotility, and the behavioural hypotheses include inadequate maternal-infant interaction, anxiety in the mother and difficult infant temperament. Other recent hypotheses, such as hormone alterations and maternal smoking, still need conf

Different features of coeliac disease in two neighbouring countries.

Against the background of reported different trends of incidence and presentation of coeliac disease in Sweden and Finland, a joint study was done to explore potential causes. The clinical study confirmed that classical symptoms and diagnosis before 2 years of age dominated in Sweden. In Finland, the symptoms were more diffuse and diagnosis in most cases was made after the age of 8 years. A significantly lower weight score attained at diagnosis was seen in Swedish patients compared with Finnish. No significant difference in HLA expression was found. Infant feeding was investigated by studying

Dietary treatment of lactose intolerance in infants and children.

During the past several years there have been many reports of alternative dietary therapies for primary and secondary lactose intolerance. We have learned that it is useful to feed through most episodes of mild diarrhea that previously would have been treated with clear liquid diets. Infant formulas, including both soy-protein and hydrolysate formulas with specially designed carbohydrate, protein, and fat components, are available to treat the infant with diarrheal syndromes and secondary lactase deficiency. Also, the diet can be supplemented with lactase. Specialized lactose-reduced products

Policy themes and instruments in WHO and UNICEF child food-environment guidance, 2015-2025: a computational content analysis.

In children's food environments, global guidance can shape policy discourse and instrument choice, but its content does not establish implementation or outcomes. In 2015-2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) published English-language guidance at the global level. A documented search, 2-author screening, and author-decision-masked expert review produced a corpus of 22 expert-refrozen documents (1,099 pages; 1,259 primary chunks). The BERTopic with document-capped discovery yielded six provisional clusters: food-marketing restrictions and chil

Development of an intestinal allergy model to evaluate the initial introduction of infant rice cereal.

Infant rice cereal (IRC), presents an increasing risk of allergic reactions upon initial exposure, effective assessment models remain underdeveloped. This study established an intestinal allergy model in female Wistar rats using lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as an adjuvant to simulate first-time IRC exposure. Clinical symptoms, physiological indicators, and immunological analyses results demonstrated that LPS triggered intestinal allergic responses and elevated serum levels of immunoglobulins (IgE, IgG, IgA, IgD, IgM), mast cell markers (mMCP-1 and MCT), and plasma histamine (HIS). Maternal body mass index and pregnancy outcome in the Nutrition Collaborative Research Support Program.

This paper uses data from the Nutrition CRSP in Egypt, Mexico and Kenya to examine relationships between maternal BMI and pregnancy outcome. Women were studied from the periconceptional period up to 6 months of lactation. No women in Egypt or Mexico, and only two in Kenya where periods of food shortage occurred, had a BMI < 18 at conception. Women with a lower BMI in Mexico and Kenya gained more weight and fat in pregnancy and lost more weight and fat during lactation. These counter-intuitive relationships affect the interpretation of weight and body composition measures used to assess energy

Contemporary human diets and their relation to health and growth: overview and conclusions.

Contemporary human diets are probably as diverse now as they have ever been in the history of mankind. The abundance of food in the western world is in stark contrast to the lack of food and near starvation in parts of Africa, the continent where Homo sapiens evolved. The development of agriculture has enabled the population of the world to expand and to colonize almost the whole of its land surface, but the dependence on one staple food has introduced problems. If the staple crop fails, for example because of drought, there may be no alternative, and undernutrition and starvation are the resu
