MAFF statutory incident reports in surveillance, prevention, and control of human Salmonella typhimurium infection.

We surveyed consultants in communicable disease control (CCDCs) for their views on the current and potential value of Statutory Incident Reports--Salmonella in Animals, Birds and their Products received from the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food (MAFF), in the surveillance, prevention, and control of Salmonella typhimurium infections in humans. CCDCs from 103 (83%) of 124 district health authorities responded. Most CCDCs in rural areas used the reports either to cross reference information about animal and human isolates or to discuss with environmental health officers. Many believed

The epidemiology and control of hookworm infection in the Burma Valley area of Zimbabwe.

An integrated hookworm control programme, involving mass chemotherapy and improvements in public health, was conducted in the Burma Valley and Vumba areas of Zimbabwe between 1985 and 1990. Three sequential annual mass chemotherapy programmes were implemented. Infection status was monitored annually throughout. Initial observations indicated asymptotic age prevalence and intensity profiles, with peak infection levels in adults. Mass chemotherapy was shown to have immediate and medium term benefits for community health. Reinfection was slow to develop, and average intensity had not returned to

Onchocerciasis infection in children born during 14 years of Simulium control in West Africa.

The incidence of onchocerciasis infection in children born since the start of vector control is one of the indicators used in the epidemiological evaluation of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa (OCP). Though initially of littel value, after a decade of control it has become a sensitive indicator of residual transmission. The results of 14 years of control are reported. In 179 villages parasitological surveys were undertaken at intervals of 3-4 years. 15,286 children were examined and 110 were found to be infected, compared to an expected number of 2467 infected had there been

[Infection in diabetes: the relation to the degree of metabolic control and protein malnutrition].

Sixty-one diabetic patients, followed for two years, were divided in two groups for evaluation. One group consisted of the patients who had a bacterial or fungal infection, and the other those in whom no infection had been recorded. The association of the infection with the degree of metabolic control and with the presence or absence of protein malnutrition were assessed. The group of patients with infection was positively correlated with malnutrition and poor metabolic control. In the group with infections, the prevalence of protein malnutrition was 77% while in the patients without infection

[Maternal morbidity following cesarean section: effect of infection control and preventive use of antibiotics].

1. Between 1976 and 1986, data were collected prospectively by a nurse specializing in hygiene on postoperative infections in the 3508 low cervical cesarean sections carried out at the University Gynecological Clinic in Tübingen. Over the past four years, this has also included data on noninfectious complications. During this 11-year period, the rate of sections rose from 10.3% to 18.2%. 2. During the first seven years, in which only hygienic, organizational, and surgical measures were used to prevent infection, the rate of patients with postoperative infections decreased from 28.2% to 11.9% (

Compendium of measures to control Chlamydia psittaci infection among humans (psittacosis) and pet birds (avian chlamydiosis), 2000. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Psittacosis--also known as parrot fever and ornithosis--is spread by a bacterial infection of birds that can cause severe pneumonia and other serious health problems among humans. From 1988 through 1998, 813 cases of psittacosis (infection with Chlamydia psittaci) were reported to CDC, and most resulted from exposure to infected pet birds, usually cockatiels, parakeets, parrots, and macaws. In birds, C. psittaci infection is referred to as avian chlamydiosis (AC). Infected birds shed the bacteria through feces and nasal discharges, and humans become infected from exposure to these materials. T

A feasibility study of controlled human infection with intradermal Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) injection: Pilot BCG controlled human infection model.

Tuberculosis (TB) caused 1.5 million deaths in 2020, making it the leading infectious killer after COVID-19. Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is the only licensed vaccine against TB but has sub-optimal efficacy against pulmonary TB and reduced effectiveness in regions close to the equator with high burden. Efforts to find novel vaccines are hampered due to the need for large-scale, prolonged, and costly clinical trials. Controlled human infection models (CHIMs) for TB may be used to accelerate vaccine development by ensuring only the most promising vaccine candidates are selected for phase 3 tria

Analysis of Postoperative Thoracolumbar Spine Infections in a Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial Using the Centers for Disease Control Surgical Site Infection Criteria.

INTRODUCTION: Wound infections following spinal surgery place a high toll on both the patient and the healthcare system. Although several large series studies have examined the incidence and distribution of spinal wound infection, the applicability of these studies varies greatly since nearly every study is either retrospective and/or lacks standard inclusion criteria for defining surgical site infection. To address this void, we present results from prospectively gathered thoracolumbar spine surgery data for which the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) criteria were stringently applied to defi

Centers for Disease Control guidelines for prevention and control of Chlamydia trachomatis infections. Summary and Commentary.

Recent guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control discuss prevention and control of Chlamydia trachomatis infection. Chlamydia trachomatis is the commonest sexually transmitted infection in the United States. The rate of infection has increased in the past 10 years. The guidelines do not discuss control of trachoma and only briefly discuss lymphogranuloma venereum. Education of health care professionals and the public about C. trachomatis is recommended, along with the establishment of a nationwide surveillance system.

CD4 T cell immunity is critical for the control of simian varicella virus infection in a nonhuman primate model of VZV infection.

Primary infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV) results in varicella (more commonly known as chickenpox) after which VZV establishes latency in sensory ganglia. VZV can reactivate to cause herpes zoster (shingles), a debilitating disease that affects one million individuals in the US alone annually. Current vaccines against varicella (Varivax) and herpes zoster (Zostavax) are not 100% efficacious. Specifically, studies have shown that 1 dose of varivax can lead to breakthrough varicella, albeit rarely, in children and a 2-dose regimen is now recommended. Similarly, although Zostavax result

Risk Assessment and Recommended Approaches to Optimize Infection Control and Antibiotic Stewardship to Reduce External Ventricular Drain Infection: A Single-Center Study.

Background: An external ventricular drain (EVD) is used to release elevated intracranial pressure by draining cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from … gnificant association with patient days in the ICU and EVD catheterization. Conclusions: Revisiting infection control measures is necessary, with special attention to the replacement of EVDs in single-bed ICU rooms, to introduce antibiotic prophylaxis in the ICU. Minimizing unnecessary EVD manipulation during catheterization is crucial in order to decrease the risk …
