Distinct patterns of hippocampal activity associated with color and spatial source memory.

The hippocampus is known to be involved in source memory across a wide variety of stimuli and source types. Thus, source memory activity in the hippocampus is thought to be domain-general such that different types of source information are similarly processed in the hippocampus. However, there is some evidence of domain-specificity for spatial and temporal source information. The current fMRI study aimed to determine whether patterns of activity in the hippocampus differed for two types of visual source information: spatial location and background color. Participants completed three runs of a

Anti-IL23 biologic therapies in the treatment of psoriasis: real-world experience versus clinical trials data.

Nowadays, the biological equipment available for the treatment of moderate-to-severe psoriasis is plenty. Anti-interleukin-23 represents the latest class of biologic approved for the management of moderate-to-severe psoriasis. Their efficacy and safety have been assessed through two major sources: clinical trials (CTs) and real-world experiences data (RWE). Notably, the two sources differ from one another, but together, they complement information and current knowledge on both efficacy and safety of biological therapy. We carry out a review on CTs and RWE reports on the latest group of biologi

On-chip biosynthesis of GM1 pentasaccharide-related complex glycans.

A functional glycan chip combined with on-chip enzymatic glycosylation was developed to prepare complex glycan sources and to apply glycan-involved applications simultaneously. GM3 trisaccharide, GM2 tetrasaccharide, and GM1 pentasaccharide were successfully directly biosynthesized on lactose-immobilized surfaces through three consecutive glycosyltransferase reactions along with small amounts of enzymes and donors, without any additional processes. Biosynthesized GM1 pentasaccharide-related complex glycans were demonstrated to provide information on the substrate specificity of whole cholera t

Exploring the Underlying Genetics of Craniofacial Morphology through Various Sources of Knowledge.

The craniofacial complex is the billboard of sorts containing information about sex, health, ancestry, kinship, genes, and environment. A thorough knowledge of the genes underlying craniofacial morphology is fundamental to understanding craniofacial biology and evolution. These genes can also provide an important foundation for practical efforts like predicting faces from DNA and phenotype-based facial diagnostics. In this work, we focus on the various sources of knowledge regarding the genes that affect patterns of craniofacial development. Although tremendous successes recently have been mad

Strengthening Rare Disease Data Readiness: a semantic approach to cross-registry interoperability.

Rare diseases affect an estimated 446 million people worldwide, yet reliable epidemiological data are scarce due to insufficient data sources and lack of standardization. The German National Registry for Rare Diseases (NARSE) aims to establish a comprehensive epidemiological data basis and enable data availability for research. However, limited interoperability between clinical and epidemiological data sources restricts secondary use and cross-registry research. This study assesses the semantic interoperability between NARSE and two core data sets: the German Medical Informatics Initiative (MI

Diagnostic Journey for Tuberous Sclerosis Complex-Interviews From a Clinical Trial.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic condition characterized by both medical and neuropsychiatric diagnoses that emerge across the lifespan. As part of a clinical trial, caregivers of children with TSC were interviewed about their experiences navigating medical, school, and social services. Semistructured interviews (N = 20) with caregivers of children with TSC (27-60 months) were conducted upon exit from the study. The interviews covered topics related to experiences following diagnosis, interactions with providers, sources of information, and access to services and treatment. The ma

Periodontal Inflammation and Systemic Diseases: An Overview.

Periodontitis is a common inflammatory disease of infectious origins that often evolves into a chronic condition. Aside from its importance as a stomatologic ailment, chronic periodontitis has gained relevance since it has been shown that it can develop into a systemic condition characterized by unresolved hyper-inflammation, disruption of the innate and adaptive immune system, dysbiosis of the oral, gut and other location's microbiota and other system-wide alterations that may cause, coexist or aggravate other health issues associated to elevated morbi-mortality. The relationships between the

A Bayesian Framework for Estimating Vaccine Efficacy per Infectious Contact.

In vaccine studies for infectious diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the frequency and type of contacts between study participants and infectious sources are among the most informative risk factors, but are often not adequately adjusted for in standard analyses. Such adjustment can improve the assessment of vaccine efficacy as well as the assessment of risk factors. It can be attained by modeling transmission per contact with infectious sources. However, information about contacts that rely on self-reporting by study participants are subject to nontrivial measurement error in

Strategies for assessing GFR and albuminuria in the living kidney donor evaluation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The international guideline development group Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) recently published a comprehensive set of recommendations for living donor evaluation which contains a new framework for decision making in the evaluation of kidney donor candidates. RECENT FINDINGS: The guidelines recommend that decisions to accept or decline a candidate donor should be based on incorporation of multiple sources of information pertaining to the donor candidate's likelihood of serious adverse outcomes after donation. Two central components of assessment of risk ar

Reliability of recall of drug usage and other health-related information.

Health-related information from multiple sources was collected on 334 women living in two predominantly white, affluent retirement communities near Los Angeles as part of a case-control study of a serious chronic disease (cancer of the breast) conducted in 1977-1978. There was no evidence on interview of cases preferentially recalling more drug use or past diseases than controls. Agreement between interview and medical record for all disease conditions studied as well as for height, weight, and most menstrual and reproductive variables was of the order of 90% or better. Age at last menstrual p

Effective networks mediate right hemispheric dominance of human 40 Hz auditory steady-state response.

Auditory steady-state responses (ASSR) are induced from the brainstem to the neocortex when humans hear periodic amplitude-modulated tonal signals. ASSRs have been argued to be a key marker of auditory temporal processing and pathological reorganization of ASSR - a biomarker of neurodegenerative disorders. However, most of the earlier studies reporting the neural basis of ASSRs were focused on looking at individual brain regions. Here, we seek to characterize the large-scale directed information flow among cortical sources of ASSR entrained by 40 Hz external signals. Entrained brain rhythms wi

Source monitoring task in a sample of in-patients with verbal auditory hallucinations compared to control sample.

Patients with psychosis, especially those with specific positive symptoms such as auditory verbal hallucinations, show a source monitoring deficit, the cognitive process involved in the recognition of the information source. This defect can lead to the erroneous conclusion that self-generated thoughts are not "proper" but derive from an external source. We evaluated 37 patients diagnosed with psychotic disorder and 40 healthy controls using a modified version of the Reality Monitoring Task developed by Larøi et al. in 2004. The patients were also evaluated with PANSS, VGF, PSP. We have found t
