Descriptive study of the real-world, long-term cost estimates and duration of use for hormonal and nonhormonal intrauterine devices using US commercial insurance claims.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine devices (IUDs) have comparable efficacy to permanent surgical contraceptive methods; however, long-term costs are infrequently considered. Existing estimates inconsistently account for costs outside of IUD insertion or removal, actual duration of use, or differences between hormonal and nonhormonal IUDs. OBJECTIVE: To describe health care resource utilization and commercial payer costs that arise throughout hormonal and nonhormonal IUD use. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, paid claims data (Merative, MarketScan) from a large US commercial claims database

Real-World Health Plan Data Analysis: Key Trends in Medication Adherence and Overall Costs in Patients with HIV.

BACKGROUND: Adherence to effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) is essential to achieve long-term viral suppression in patients with HIV-1. Single-tablet regimens (STRs) have improved adherence and decreased health care costs and hospitalizations, but previous study results suggest that the relationship between ART adherence and health care costs and utilization is complex. OBJECTIVE: To assess ART adherence trends in patients with HIV-1 to determine if differences in utilization, demographics, and overall costs exist among patients with varying levels of medication adherence. METHODS: This

Disparity in Risk of Readmission in Adult Burn Patients: Analysis of a Nationwide Readmission Database.

INTRODUCTION: Burn injuries remain a significant cause of disability, impacting long term quality-of-life and imposing large costs on our health systems. Readmission is a metric of quality and an important contributor to this economic burden. The association of socioeconomic and insurance status with burn readmission is not well established. The aim of our study is to develop a predictive risk model of factors associated with readmission after burns. METHODS: Using the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project's 2018 Nationwide Readmission Database, we identified patients ≥18 y of age with burn

"My first 48 hours out": drug users' perspectives on challenges and strategies upon release from prison.

BACKGROUND: Prisoners report much higher prevalence rates of drug use and more harmful consumption patterns than the general population. People who use drugs have above-average experiences with the criminal justice system in general, and the prison system and subsequent release situations in particular. Release from prison is associated with increased mortality rates among drug users due to the risk of overdose. The EU-funded project 'My first 48 hours out' aimed to address the gaps in continuity of care for long-term drug users in prison and upon release, with a special focus on drug user's p

Retrospective Chart Review of Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression as a Therapeutic Modality for Low Back Pain.

INTRODUCTION: Low back pain (LBP) is a leading cause of disability and health care costs worldwide. Despite its prevalence, many patients fail to respond to surgical interventions and often face opioid dependency. Nonsurgical spinal decompression (NSSD) is a conservative treatment that may alleviate LBP by decompressing intervertebral discs, but it remains underutilized as a result of limited evidence and lack of insurance coverage. METHODS: This retrospective chart review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of NSSD and LBP outcomes, including pain intensity, neurological function, and activi
