Effects of communication with important social referents on beliefs and intentions to use condoms.

Data from a 1989 survey using the condom attitude and belief instrument with 310 clients from two sexually transmitted disease clinics identified significant social referents who influence condom-use intentions. They are sexual partner, father and friends. The present study found that communication with these referents had a positive net effect on beliefs about and intentions to use condoms. Implications applicable for intervention programmes to increase condom use are to promote talking about condoms between the sexual partners and important social referents and to develop such communication …

Encouraging attendance at screening mammography: knowledge, attitudes and intentions of general practitioners.

We surveyed a random sample of 200 general practitioners from the Sydney metropolitan area about their attitudes to and knowledge of screening mammography. General practitioners' knowledge about some aspects of screening mammography was found to be limited; only 25% of the sample knew that the risk of breast cancer increases with age and only 30% of the sample knew that the evidence for a reduction in mortality as a result of mammographic screening is weakest for women of less than 50 years of age. Ninety-five per cent of general practitioners were of the opinion that breast self-examination a

A study on the pathways through which pet ownership influences fertility intentions.

Against the backdrop of China's low fertility rate, examining the impact of pet ownership on fertility intentions and its underlying mechanisms holds significant importance for enriching research on factors influencing fertility decisions and for understanding the complex relationship between modern lifestyles and reproductive choices. This study, grounded in self-determination theory, collected 551 valid samples through questionnaire surveys and employed structural equation modeling for analysis. Findings reveal that pet ownership not only positively associated with fertility intentions but a…

Formal help-seeking intentions for dementia in the Australian public: associations with stigma.

To understand dementia stigma and help-seeking intentions amongst middle-aged and older community-dwelling Australians, a cross-sectional online survey was conducted in February 2023 amongst Australian adults aged ≥45 years. The survey collected demographic data, prior experience with people with dementia, dementia-related public stigma, and formal and informal help-seeking intentions for self and family members (modified General Help-Seeking Questionnaire). Multivariable regression models were used to examine factors associated with help-seeking intentions. Data from 1364 participants were an…

Migration intentions among nigerian neurosurgeons: a national survey of workforce retention.

Physician emigration from low- and middle-income countries creates critical workforce shortages. This study explored factors influencing migration intentions among Nigerian neurosurgeons and trainees. We conducted an anonymized survey of consultant neurosurgeons, fellows, and residents practicing in Nigeria. Invitations were sent by email and professional messaging platforms, and snowball sampling was used to increase participation. The survey included quantitative and open-ended questions on demographics, income, migration plans, and retention factors. Seventy-nine respondents participated (6…

Structural knowledge-guided complex-noise handling for open intent classification.

Open intent classification aims to assign known intents to their corresponding classes while identifying unknown intents. Its success largely relies on accurately annotated data. However, real-world data often contains both in-distribution (IND) noise and out-of-distribution (OOD) noise, which degrades model performance. Despite recent progress, open intent classification under such complex-noise scenarios remains underexplored. Moreover, existing noise-handling methods face several limitations: 1) they typically rely on limited class-level information, such as prototypes, for noise detection,

Vectorizing Human Gait: An Adaptive Kinematic Embedding for Monitoring and Intent Detection.

Lower-limb exoskeletons offer high-dose gait rehabilitation, but their effectiveness depends on accurate coordination between the user and robotic controller. We propose a real-time method to estimate and represent the user's intended motions from hip and knee joint angle feedback. A kinematic feature vector is obtained through a processing pipeline including gait phase estimation, standardization, and recursive fitting of a von Mises basis function model to the hip and knee flexion angles. We show that the basis functions coefficients form a rich feature vector for classifying and detecting c

Career Intentions in Academic Medicine: Factors Influencing Pursuit and Gender Disparities.

INTRODUCTION: A decline in intentions to pursue careers in academic medicine (AM) has been observed, despite their importance for healthcare systems and scientific advancement. Persistent gender disparities further highlight the need to understand the factors shaping these career choices. METHODS: This cross-sectional online survey study examined factors associated with AM career intentions among 1,641 french medical residents (63% women) who completed an online survey assessing individual (e.g. self-efficacy, professional interest), contextual (e.g. mentorship, perceived stress), and backgro…

From Narcissism to Drug-Taking Intentions: Direct and Indirect Pathways Explored.

Drug misuse is a longstanding public health issue that has prompted research on what factors influence an individual's intent to use. Personality traits, particularly narcissism, have been identified as significant predictors of drug use. This cross-sectional pre-registered study examined the relationship between narcissism and drug-taking intention among 142 U.K. university students, specifically investigating whether impulsiveness and sensation seeking mediated this relationship. The results from regression and mediation analyses indicate that while narcissism was positively associated with …

Exclusive breastfeeding and postpartum depression: A protective association that is not modified by feeding intentions.

Approximately 13% of women in the United States (U.S.) experience postpartum depression (PPD), a mood disorder that negatively affects maternal and infant wellbeing. Breastfeeding may protect against PPD and breastfeeding intentions may moderate this relationship. This study examined the association between breastfeeding status and PPD symptoms and whether exclusive breastfeeding intentions moderate this relationship in low-income women in the U.S. We utilized data from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Infant and Toddler Feeding Practices Study-…

Defender, Passive, and Pro-Bully: Exploring Bystanders' Intentions toward Cyberbullying.

Objective: The present study examines the usefulness of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) in explaining three distinct responses to cyberbullying among adolescents: defending, pro-bully, and passive intentions. A model was constructed to assess intentions, including control variables (gender, age, cyberbullying victimization, and perpetration experiences), social norms (family, friends, and teachers), attitude toward helping cyberbullying victims, perceived behavioral control, and empathy. Method: Data were collected from 2,539 students aged 11 to 18 years (M = 14.07, SD = 1.39) across eigh…

Action Intentions Shape Task- and Phase-Specific Integration of Object Features.

Theories of object-based attention suggest that attending to an object binds its features together. Yet, there is a growing body of work to suggest that the intention to grasp an object can alter the representation of features such that they are separately represented during different stages of motor planning and execution, whereas some object features such as shape and size might form integrated representations when afforded by motor control. However, it remains untested whether these features were integrated as an outcome of the requirements of grasping motor control, or due to attention tow…
