Triphalangeal thumb is an autosomal dominantly inherited form of abnormal preaxial skeletal development. In most families, however, the triphalangeal thumb phenotype coexists with a spectrum of limb deformities, including polydactyly and syndactyly. We describe two Iowa kindreds with triphalangeal thumb. In one family, with nine affected members, triphalangeal thumb was the only manifestation of limb deformity. Decision-making over time is an important aspect of adaptive social functioning. The main goal of this study was to investigate the development of this ability in young children. A simplified version of the Iowa Gambling Task was given to 69 children at 3 ages (3, 4, and 6 years). Children were also given an awareness test to assess their knowledge of the task. In order to document the differences in survival between patients with solitary plasmacytoma and those with multiple myeloma involving the spine, we have reviewed the cases of 12 patients with solitary plasmacytoma of the vertebral column treated at the University of Iowa and an additional 72 cases reported in the literature. All patients were followed for 2 years or more without evidence of disseminated disease. To determine the feasibility of third kidney transplantation, the experience at the University of Iowa was evaluated.
