We present the clinical, radiographic and histological findings of 15 paradental cysts. These were the second most common type of cyst associated with mandibular third molars, comprising 25% of all lesions at this site. Ten patients were aged 30 years or younger and 13 gave a history of pericoronitis. There was a close relationship between the site of the cyst and the angle of the impacted tooth; the cyst lay mesially to two mesioangularly impacted teeth, buccal to two vertically impacted teeth and distal/distobuccal to the remainder, all but one of which were distoangular in impaction. In 1991, 146 consultant plastic surgeons in Britain and Ireland were sent a short questionnaire about their policies for excision margins for primary cutaneous malignant melanoma. 106/146 (73%) replied. 39/106 (37%) considered narrow margin (2-3 mm) excision biopsies adequate in certain cases. In a study of 95 patients with intraocular foreign body injuries presenting in the eight year period from 1978-1986 we found the overall visual results to be good with 62% of patients achieving a final visual acuity of 6/18 or better. The factors leading to a poor visual result were a large intraocular foreign body, poor presenting visual acuity and the presence of posterior vitreo-retinal complications. We support the removal of dense vitreous haemorrhage to reduce the risk of retinal traction.

An attempt was made to assess the importance of selective discharge by death or retirement of workers with respiratory symptoms in a flax mill in Northern Ireland. One hundred and two men who had worked in a flax mill during 1952-62 and who were aged 35 years or more at the time of leaving were followed up. Fourteen of the men had died and 75 were interviewed. The 2020 SARS-CoV-2 pandemic posed significant challenges to the health service. Many services cancelled all routine appointments and surgery, which allowed them to redirect care towards large numbers of infected patients requiring respiratory and other support.
