A 5-month-old, male, Shih Tzu dog manifesting polyuria and polydipsia since 2-month-old was presented to our hospital with additional clinical complaints of vomiting and depression during recent a few days. The incidence of cystic fibrosis (CF) is very rare in Japanese, while it is frequent in Caucasians. Here we report on three Japanese cases of CF. One of the patients had consanguineous parents. The raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus) is known to acquire canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infection. We surveyed the prevalence of heartworm infection in free-ranging raccoon dogs in the Nishi-Tama (Tokyo) and Kanagawa areas of Japan. A total of 75 raccoon dog carcasses, including 29 animals from the Nishi-Tama area and 46 from the Kanagawa area, were necropsied between 1992 and 1993. We report the annual results of patch testing with lavender oil for a 9-year period from 1990 to 1998 in Japan. Using Finn Chambers and Scanpor tape, we performed 2-day closed patch testing with lavender oil 20% pet. on the upper back of each patient suspected of having cosmetic contact dermatitis. Patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) in Japan have two peaks in age distribution, one in their twenties and the other in their fifties and sixties. We assessed the prevalence of personality disorders (PD) using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorders (SCID-II) in 36 patients with restricting anorexia nervosa, 30 patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, and 42 patients with bulimia nervosa. Of the 108 patients, 51% met the criteria for at least one PD. We investigated the occurrence of multiple primary colorectal and gastric cancer (MPCGC) in 1277 colorectal cancer patients between 1972 and 1996. MPCGC was found in 65 (5.1%). In the 28 synchronous cases, gastric or colorectal cancer was accidentally detected by pre-, intra-, or postoperative examinations. Eating disorders have traditionally been described as a typically 'Western' illness. Cases that occur outside Western countries are often regarded as atypical. Peculiarities are thus emphasized.
