INTRODUCTION: Fibrous dysplasia is a primary orbital bone tumor, described as a benign disorder in which proliferation of fibrous tissue and osteoid replaces and distorts the bone from which it derives. Unilateral keratoconus is a rare entity. Herein, we report a case of an extensive ethmoidal fibrous dysplasia associated with ipsilateral keratoconus, and review the literature on the subject.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 22-year-old man presented with left painless proptosis evolving over 10 years. There was associated ipsilateral epiphora and gradual visual loss. On examination his visual acuity…

We report a case of sterile keratitis after Ferrara intracorneal ring (Ferrara Ophthalmics) implantation into the right cornea of a keratoconus patient who also suffered from atopic blepharoconjunctivitis. The keratitis resolved within a few days after removal of the Ferrara rings. Ocular atopy with sterile keratitis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of keratitis after the insertion of intracorneal ring segments, which can be easily treated by ring removal.

BACKGROUND: One hypothesis for the pathogenesis of keratoconus includes teenage allergy, ocular itch and associated eye-rubbing.
METHODS: This study examined the prevalence of these factors for teenage and adult patients. The results for a sample of 53 subjects with bilateral keratoconus were compared with those for a control sample of non-keratoconus subjects, who also routinely wore RGP contact lenses. The strongest dominant hand and the eye with more advanced keratoconus were also determined, to examine for a relationship between them.
RESULTS: The keratoconic sample reported significantl…

Keratoconus is typically managed by a variety of rigid contact lens fitting techniques and lens designs. The two most fundamental fitting techniques are apical corneal touch (including divided or three-point touch) and apical clearance. In the course of designing a multi-center study of keratoconus patients, a standardized keratoconus fitting protocol was developed. All contact lens parameter options are uniform except for base curve and secondary curve radii, which are determined by interpretation of fluorescein patterns using the CLEK Study trial lens set and protocol. The initial trial lens…

Keratoconus (KC) is the most common corneal ectasia. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) is a relatively new non-invasive imaging technique that allows the visualization and quantification of retinal and choriocapillary blood vessels. The aim of this study is to assess retinal and choriocapillary vessel density (VD) differences between KC patients and healthy controls and to investigate correlations between VD and KC severity. Fifty-two eyes were included in this exploratory study: twenty-six eyes from 26 KC patients and twenty-six eyes from 26 age- and gender-matched healthy cont…

Oculodentodigital dysplasia (ODDD) is a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the GJA1 gene, which encodes connexin 43 (Cx43). The co … corneas, nystagmus, hyperprolate corneal profiles, and corneal topography consistent with incipient keratoconus, which may be attributed to functional alterations of Cx43. Close ophthalmologic follow-up is recommended in patients with ODDD to detect treatable visual complications that may significantly impact quality of life.
