Metastasis of renal cancer to the wrist and hand: a case report.

Metastases to the hand and wrist are rare. The lung, breast and kidneys are the most common sites of primary lesions that metastasize in the hand. Phalanges are more commonly involved than metacarpals and wrist. We report the case of a neglected, large metastatic tumour involving a patient’s left wrist and metacarpus originating form renal adenocarcinoma cancer, which appeared 2 years prior to the diagnosis of the primary neoplasm. The tumour was resected, but without oncologic margins. After obtaining histological veri- 􀏐ication (clear cell renal cell carcinoma) the patient had been proposed

Intestinal type villous adenoma of the renal pelvis.

Intestinal type villous adenomas are uncommon in the genitourinary tract. Most reported cases have been located in the urinary bladder or urachus. Villous adenoma arising in the renal pelvis or ureter is very rare. We present a case of an 81-year-old female who presented with difficulty voiding and mucosuria. A computed tomography scan identified right-sided hydronephrosis, renal parenchymal atrophy, nonobstructing calculi and a lower pole renal mass. She underwent open right nephrectomy. Histopathologic examination of the kidney revealed an intestinal type villous adenoma of the renal pelvis

[Renal cancer: what can we expect from emerging new technologies: radiofrequency and cryoablation?].

Radiofrequency and cryoablation are both minimally invasive techniques applied to the treatment of renal cell carcinoma. These techniques allow in situ destruction of neoplasm. Although cryotherapy is the most studied, radiofrequency is the most currently used technique. Indications mostly accepted as elective indication are the less than 4 cm in diameter exophytic tumors. Radiofrequency and cryoablation can also be proposed in patients with solitary kidney, multiple bilateral tumors and patients with contraindication for surgical resection. The radiofrequency parietal tract can be coagulated

Ghrelin expression in islet cell tumors: augmented expression of ghrelin in a case of glucagonoma with multiple endocrine neoplasm type I.

Ghrelin is a 28-amino acid peptide that regulates GH release together with GHRH and somatostatin. The expression of ghrelin has been detected in the stomach, small intestine, hypothalamus, pituitary gland, kidney, placenta, and testis. Recently it was reported that ghrelin is present in pancreatic alpha-cells and that it stimulates insulin secretion. In this study, we examined the ghrelin expression in two cases of glucagonoma and two cases of insulinoma by Northern blot analysis and immunohistochemistry. Ghrelin expression was identified in a case of glucagonoma associated with multiple endoc

[Symptomatic angiomyolipoma of the kidney: report of 2 cases].

Renal angiomyolipoma is an uncommon benign tumor composed of adipose tissue, dysplastic blood vessels and smooth muscle. The tumor may occur as a distinct entity or in association with tuberous sclerosis. The diagnosis is usually easy but a malignant neoplasm can not always be excluded. Tumors smaller than 4 cm are mostly asymptomatic and usually do not need to be treated. For larger lesions a treatment is advisable especially in case of symptoms because of the risk of a severe hemorrhage. The treatment should be as conservative as possible and nephrectomy preformed only when a malignant tumor

Kidneys in infants and children: evaluation with MR.

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was performed in 58 children aged 1 day to 17 years. In 43 patients with suspected renal abnormalities, the results of MR were compared with those obtained by ultrasonography, computed tomography, or excretory urography. The remaining 15 children with no known renal disease were initially imaged to define the appearance on MR images of the normal kidneys according to the child's age. The signal intensity from hilar adipose tissue increased with age; corticomedullary differentiation was best seen in younger children. Compared with other imaging modalities, MR add

[Caval extension of renal cancer. Surgical problems].

The authors report on a case of renal neoplasm with associated thrombosis of the vena cava extending to the right auricle. The authors undertook, right away, by way of a median sternotomy and under extracorporeal circulation, the ablation of the intra-cardiac thrombus, and also the removal of the remainder of thrombus in the inferior vena cava. This having been achieved without complications, they performed excision of the right kidney as well as a cavectomy, thus effecting ablation of the tumour while preserving the venous drainage above the liver and the left renal vein. A review of the lite

Pulsating metastatic tumor of the orbit.

A 47-year-old white man in apparent good health had diplopia and swelling of the right upper eyelid. Ocular examination showed proptosis of the right eye, together with a large, pulsatile, collapsible mass simulating a vascular neoplasm and involving the right temple as well as the right upper outer quadrant of the orbit. Biopsy of the orbital tumor disclosed a clear-cell carcinoma compatible with a renal primary tumor; subsequent laboratory examination revealed the offending tumor in the left kidney. Renal carcinomas may metastasize to the globe or to the orbit before the primary tumor is rec

Robotic Excision and Pathologic Profiling of Nonfunctioning Juxtaglomerular Cell Tumor of the Kidney: First Reported Case From the Indian Subcontinent.

Juxtaglomerular cell tumor (JGCT), also known as reninoma, is an exceptionally rare benign renal neoplasm arising from modified smooth muscle cells of the afferent arteriole of the juxtaglomerular apparatus. The tumor classically presents in young patients with secondary hypertension due to autonomous renin secretion, hypokalemia, and hyperaldosteronism.  A 56-year-old asymptomatic female with known hypothyroidism was incidentally detected to have a right renal mass on a routine health check-up. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) confirmed a 2.7 × 2.5 cm homogeneously enhancing medul

Three-dimensional gadolinium-enhanced MR angiography: applications for abdominal imaging.

Three-dimensional (3D) gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) angiography is a versatile technique that combines speed, superb contrast, and relative simplicity. It has a wide range of applications, particularly in the abdomen and pelvis, where superb images of the abdominal aorta and renal arteries are routinely obtained. Aneurysms, atherosclerotic lesions, and occlusions of the major mesenteric arteries are also well depicted. In addition, 3D gadolinium-enhanced MR angiography is ideal for noninvasive evaluation of the systemic and mesenteric veins and can be used to demonstrate parench

Low-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma after high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in a child with ataxia telangiectasia.

BACKGROUND: Non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) account for approximately 50% of neoplasms in patients with ataxia telangiectasia (AT). Prognosis is poor. Published data regarding the treatment of NHL in patients with AT suggested that these children respond poorly to therapy. The authors report on an infant with AT with mediastinal high-grade T-NHL who remained in continuous complete remission after chemotherapy. Diagnosis of AT was established after tumor diagnosis. METHODS AND RESULTS: The 7-month-old boy was treated according to the acute lymphoblastic leukemia-Berlin, Frankfurt, Münster 86 proto

Synchronous Presentation and Management of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and Renal Neoplasm: A Case Series Analysis.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The concomitant presence of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and renal cancer is a rare but increasingly diagnosed condition, often found incidentally. Despite distinct etiologies, both pathologies share common risk factors making their coexistence relevant in an increasingly comorbid population. The lack of established guidelines necessitates careful multidisciplinary planning for optimal therapeutic choice. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From March 2010 to March 2025, 11 consecutive patients with coexisting AAA and renal neoplasm underwent surgical procedures at Policlinico Umberto I,

Association of Amlodipine with the Risk of In-Hospital Death in Patients with COVID-19 and Hypertension: A Reanalysis on 184 COVID-19 Patients with Hypertension.

Association between calcium channel blockers (CCBs) or functional inhibitors of acid sphingomyelinase (FIASMAs) use and decreased mortality in people with COVID-19 has been reported in recent studies. Since amlodipine is both a CCB and a FIASMA, the aim of this study was to investigate the association between chronic amlodipine use and the survival of people with hypertension infected with COVID-19. This retrospective cohort study used data extracted from the medical records of adult inpatients with hypertension and laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 between 1 March 2020 and 31 August 2020 with def

A Rare Case of Triple Primary Malignant Neoplasms (RCC and Colon Cancer) Detected by 18F-FDG PET/CT.

Multiple primary malignancies are not uncommon in daily oncology practice, even though their frequency in the same or different organ systems varies. Regardless, early detection and proper planning of therapeutic approaches are essential for successful management. Here, we present a 73-years-old male with adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid who was referred for initial staging with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). 18F-FDG PET/CT revealed two metabolically active formations in the sigmoid and ascending colon and a large, heterogeneous tumor l

Optimization of cardiovascular risk factor management in patients with BCR::ABL1 negative chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms, current knowledge, and perspectives.

The exact prognostic role of cardiovascular (CV) risk factors in patients with BCR::ABL1 negative chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) remains unknown as it is often masked by other MPN-related features that bear strong prognostic impact on thrombotic risk. Therefore, current MPN treatment is not primarily guided by presence of CV risk factors. Treatment of CV risk factors in MPN patients usually mirrors that from the general population, despite the fact that CV risk factors in MPNs have their own specificities. Moreover, the optimal target levels for different metabolic deflections in

Renal mycetoma presenting with features suggesting renal malignancy: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Neoplasms of the Kidney are rarely caused by actinomycetoma or other mycetoma species. Actinomycetoma is a neglected tropical disease which is not uncommon in Sudan. Usually, it is presented as skin and subcutaneous tissue lesions or mass and can affect the bone and other soft tissue. Sites of the lesion are found in lower limbs, upper limbs, head and neck and torso. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old female presented incidental left renal mass on ultrasound examination from the internal medical department. It is presented as a renal mass mimicking renal cell carcin

Primary myxoid and epithelioid mesenchymal tumor of the kidney with a novel GLI1-FOXO4 fusion.

To our knowledge, we describe the first mesenchymal tumor with a novel GLI1-FOXO4 fusion gene. This well-circumscribed kidney tumor displayed variably myxoid and epithelioid histologic features with a focally nodular growth pattern. The tumor cells showed bland, round to ovoid nuclei, with no overt high-grade features. The tumor showed focal immunopositivity for smooth muscle actin and Melan-A, which raised the possibility of a relationship with a perivascular epithelioid cell tumor. The clinical and morphologic features appear distinct from other reported neoplasms harboring GLI1 or FOXO4 gen

Expanding the histomorphologic spectrum of TFE3-rearranged perivascular epithelioid cell tumors.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are a family of mesenchymal neoplasms that have smooth muscle and melanocytic differentiation. They can be sporadic or associated with tuberous sclerosis complex and commonly present in the kidney as angiomyolipoma or in the lung as pulmonary clear cell sugar tumors or lymphangioleiomyomatosis. However, they can present at any visceral or soft tissue site. They usually have a benign clinical course, but rarely can behave in a malignant fashion. Most PEComas demonstrate abnormalities of TSC2, but a recently described subset harbor TFE3 rearrangemen
