Association of clinical laboratory parameters with latent tuberculosis infection among healthcare workers of primary health centers-A cross-sectional observational study.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at high risk of tuberculosis (TB) infection due to their continued occupational exposure to patients with active TB disease. The prevalence of latent TB infections (LTBI) among the HCWs of primary healthcare centers (PHCs) has seldom been investigated. PHCs provide effective and preventive medical care largely for the rural population. Comparatively, the HCWs of PHCs are likely to have an increased risk of occupational exposure and reactivation of LTBI. A cross-sectional study (March-April 2024) was carried out to assess the prevalence of LTBI among the HCWs of 64

Evaluating the Diagnostic Utility of Serum Laboratory Studies and Synovial Fluid Analysis in Identifying Periprosthetic Joint Infection in Metal Hip Revisions.

Background Metal-on-metal (MoM) bearing surfaces have been implicated as a cause of increased complication rates in total hip arthroplasty (THA), with local and systemic reactions identified. These reactions may cause abnormal laboratory results in common tests that are used to diagnose periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utility of common laboratory studies in the diagnosis of PJI in patients undergoing revision THA with MoM bearings. Methods A retrospective case series of 81 patients undergoing THA revision of MoM bearings from January 2010 to

Experimental infection of three laboratory mouse stocks with a shrew origin Bartonella elizabethae strain: an evaluation of bacterial host switching potential.

BACKGROUND: Bartonella elizabethae has been reported as a causative agent of human illnesses and strains of this bacterium are commonly isolated from commensal small mammals in Asia. METHODS: Since the zoonotic potential of a pathogen is often related to its host switching ability, we explored the capacity of a B. elizabethae strain to host switch by subcutaneously inoculating groups of Swiss Webster, BALB/c, and C57BL/6 mice with the bacteria at a range of doses. RESULTS: A low number of mice in each of the three groups showed susceptibility to infection at high doses (10(5) and 10(6) bacte

Selective testing of women based on age for genital Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection in a centralized regional microbiology laboratory.

Calgary Laboratory Services, Alberta, Canada, provides microbiology services via a centralized laboratory to the Calgary Health Region. A selective genital Chlamydia trachomatis (CT)/Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) testing policy for women >35 years was implemented. The changes in physician ordering practice, the rate of detection of infections, and the test turnaround times were monitored. The volume of tests, the cost/test, and the total service costs accrued in the year before and after this policy change were compared. An immediate impact was a 30% decrease in tests performed due to the laborat

The impact of multicenter microbiology laboratory workflow optimization on antimicrobial susceptibility testing reporting time and outcomes of patients with bloodstream infection.

Bloodstream infections (BSIs) are life-threatening disorders linked to substantial global mortality, and timely pathogen identification (ID) and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) are indispensable for targeted clinical management. Blood culture (BC) remains the gold-standard diagnostic approach, but conventional workflows often lead to prolonged turnaround times (TAT) and delayed targeted therapy. This multicenter retrospective study aimed to evaluate the impact of the BC workflow optimization strategy in 10 tertiary hospitals in Shandong Province, China. The intervention included 24/

Assessing yield and impact of 5-day versus 10-day incubation time in suspected prosthetic joint infection: a prospective laboratory study.

Optimising laboratory processes is paramount in differentiating prosthetic joint infection (PJI) from non-infectious causes of joint dysfunction. However, the optimal duration of incubation of PJI samples remains unclear in the modern laboratory. This study explored whether an increased incubation time in the routine processing of samples from suspected PJI, from 5-7 to 10 days, would significantly increase the yield of clinically relevant bacteria. A total of 280 prosthetic joint samples from 53 patients were included prospectively over a 3-month period. After an initial standard 5-day incuba

Cumulative incidence and mortality rate of cardiovascular complications due to laboratory-confirmed influenza virus infection: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Influenza infection is associated with cardiovascular complications that range significantly in presentation and severity. The cumulative incidence of cardiovascular complications due to laboratory-confirmed influenza, however, is not reported in the literature. We conducted a systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis to evaluate the cumulative incidence and mortality rate of influenza virus-related cardiovascular complications in hospitalized patients. We searched the PubMed and EMBASE databases for studies reporting acute myocardial infarction (AMI), heart failure (HF), arrhythmia o

Interpreting Laboratory Tests in Infection: Making Sense of Biomarkers in Sepsis and Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome for Intensive Care Unit Patients.

Sepsis and severe sepsis are leading causes of death in the United States and the most common causes of death among critically ill patients in noncoronary intensive care units. Diagnosis of infection and sepsis is a subjective clinical judgment based on the criteria for systemic inflammatory reaction, which is highly sensitive, not specific, and often misleading in intensively treated patients. Biomarkers are emerging as adjuncts to traditional diagnostic measures. No biomarkers have sufficient specificity or sensitivity to be routinely used in clinical practice, but they can aid in the diagno

Immunohistochemistry analysis of P16INK4a in pre-invasive ocular surface squamous neoplasia tissue samples infected and not infected by human papilloma virus at an academic laboratory in Northern Tshwane.

Ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) encompasses a wide range of benign and malignant tumours that arise from the conjunctiva and cornea. Tumour progression involves various genetic and epigenetic changes affecting oncogenes. The tumour suppressor gene P16INK4a serves as a key biomarker for high-risk humanpailloma virus (HR-HPV) infection in squamous neoplasms. This study assessed the prognostic significance of P16INK4a in pre-invasive ocular surface squamous neoplasia tissue samples. This retrospective study analysed 58 formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue samples of OSSN with k

Mucosal barrier injury as an independent risk factor for laboratory-confirmed bloodstream infection in patients with hematological malignancies: a real-world study.

BACKGROUND: Hematological malignancy (HM) patients are at high risk of bloodstream infections (BSIs) due to chemotherapy-induced mucosal barrier injury (MBI), invasive procedures, and prolonged antimicrobial exposure. While conventional nosocomial infection paradigms emphasize catheter-related biofilms, emerging evidence highlights the role of disrupted oral/gut microbiomes in bacterial translocation. This study aimed to identify risk factors for bacteremia secondary to MBI following chemotherapy in patients with HM. METHODS: A single-center, retrospective analysis of 72 HM patients, includin
