Clinical features of alcoholic ketoacidosis with and without lactic acidosis: A retrospective descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Alcoholic ketoacidosis (AKA) is a potentially life-threatening condition due to high anion gap metabolic acidosis in chronic alcohol use. While lactic acidosis (LA) is typically uncommon in AKA, AKA without concurrent acute conditions is occasionally complicated with LA. The aim of this study was to clarify the clinical features in isolated AKA patients with LA and those without LA. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary hospital between January 2021 and January 2024. We identified isolated AKA patients aged ≥20 years who presented with high anion gap metabo

Active Dry Yeast and Thiamine in Synergistic Mode Can Mitigate Adverse Effects of In Vitro Ruminal Acidosis Model of Goats.

Ruminal acidosis is a type of metabolic disorder of high-yielding ruminants which is associated with the consumption of a high-grain diet. It not only harms the productive efficiency, health and wellbeing of the animals but also has detrimental effects on the economy of the farmers. Various strategies have been adapted to control ruminal acidosis. However, none of them have produced the desired results. This research was carried out to investigate the potential of active dry yeast (ADY) and thiamine in a synergistic mode to mitigate in vitro-induced ruminal acidosis. The purpose of this study

Glutamate-induced modulation in energy metabolism contributes to protection of rat cortical slices against ischemia-induced damage.

OBJECTIVES: Glutamate excitotoxicity contributes to neurodegeneration during cerebral ischemia. Recent studies in the protective effect of glutamate against ischemia and hypoxia have shown the need for questioning the role of glutamate in energy metabolism during ischemia. Current study investigates the effect of glutamate on energy substrate metabolites such as alpha-ketoglutarate, lactate, and pyruvate release during control, oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD), and reoxygenation (REO) conditions. METHODS: The effects of 0.5 and 2 mM glutamate on spontaneous alpha-ketoglutarate, lactate, and p

Glucose Metabolism, Lactate, Lactylation and Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder primarily characterized by cognitive decline; however, its pathogenesis remains incompletely understood. In recent years, the role of lactate metabolism and its derived lactylation modifications in AD has received increasing attention. As a product of glycolysis, lactate is not only a key molecule in energy metabolism but also regulates gene expression and protein function through lactylation modifications. Studies have shown that in the brains of AD patients, glucose metabolism is significantly reduced, while glycolysis is upregulated,

CORRELATIVE ASSOCIATION OF OXYGENATION AND SEPSIS PANELS WITH THE USE OF ACE2 INHIBITORS AND WITHOUT IT IN THE CONDITIONS OF SEPTIC SHOCK IN COVID-19-INFECTED AND NON-INFECTED PATIENTS (COHORT STUDY).

Sepsis-associated hyperlactatemia (SAHL), Lactic acidosis, is a common problem in critically ill patients. The prevalence of Lactic acidosis is estimated to be approximately 1% of all hospitalized nonsurgical patients. The purpose of our study was to reveal possible associations between the level of Lactate with sepsis biomarkers: PCT, IL 6, and PO2 in the presence of ACE 2 inhibitors in Covid-19 infected and non-infected patients with Septic Shock. We conducted a cohort study, comparing outcomes of 212 critically ill patients with Septic shock, who were treated in the intensive care unit of F

Treatise on insanity in pregnant, postpartum, and lactating women (1858) by Louis-Victor Marcé: a commentary.

Louis-Victor Marcé, MD, of Paris compiled an extensive monograph published in 1858 that surveyed knowledge of psychiatric disorders of women during and following pregnancy. This work has largely been ignored for 150 years. We summarize here what is known about Marcé's life and work, and include selected passages from his monograph. Marcé provides extensive clinical descriptions of syndromes, with 79 case examples, and summarizes etiological theories and treatments characteristic of his era and place. This work was based on cases that he personally evaluated and on other reported cases, all dra

Effect of sulpiride on plasma prolactin levels in women with puerperal or pathological hyperprolactinaemia.

The effect of 100 mg im sulpiride on plasma Prl levels was studied in 10 normal females, 21 patients with galactorrhoea and normal plasma Prl, 10 women with puerperal hyperprolactinaemia and 27 patients with amenorrhoea-galactorrhoea and high plasma Prl levels. The response to sulpiride in patients with galactorrhoea but normal PRL was slightly higher (P < 0.05) than that observed in normal women, but only if expressed in per cent. Women with puerperal hyperprolactinaemia respond to the drug with a marked increase in Prl (mean +/- SEM: 563.0 +/- 142.8%), even though their baseline values are a

LDHA as a Potential Therapeutic Target for Lactylation Regulation in Spinal Cord Injury: Integrated Bioinformatics Analysis, Experimental Validation, and Drug Prediction.

Lactate metabolism and its epigenetic modification, lactylation, are emerging regulators in neurological disorders, yet their roles in spinal cord injury (SCI) remain unclear. Here, we mined SCI transcriptomes from GEO and identified 13 differentially expressed lactylation-related genes (DE-LRGs), with lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA) significantly upregulated. Immune-infiltration analysis linked LDHA to T cells gamma delta, and Mfuzz time-series clustering showed dynamic LDHA upregulation during acute SCI, which was validated in GSE45006. Random forest and ROC analyses supported the diagnostic

Lactate administration causes long-term neuroprotective effects following neonatal hypoxia-ischemia.

Neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) is one of the main causes of mortality and long-term disabilities in newborns, and the only clinical approach to treat this condition is therapeutic hypothermia, which shows some limitations. Thus, putative neuroprotective agents have been tested in animal models of HI. Lactate is a preferential metabolic substrate of the neonatal brain and has already been shown to produce beneficial neuroprotective outcomes in neonatal animals exposed to HI. Here, we administered lactate as a treatment in neonatal rats previously exposed to HI and evaluated the impact of this t

Elevated serum levels of diamine oxidase, D-lactate and lipopolysaccharides are associated with metabolic-associated fatty liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Studies have suggested an association between metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and intestinal barrier function. The present study aims to investigate the association between MAFLD and intestinal barrier impairment in humans and identify potential risk factors for MAFLD. METHODS: A total of 491 patients were retrospectively enrolled in this study. The serum levels of diamine oxidase, D-lactate and lipopolysaccharide were measured to evaluate intestinal barrier integrity in patients with and without MAFLD. Binary logistic regression and correlational analyses were co
