A multimodal language region in the ventral visual pathway.

Reading words and naming pictures involves the association of visual stimuli with phonological and semantic knowledge. Damage to a region of the brain in the left basal posterior temporal lobe (BA37), which is strategically situated between the visual cortex and the more anterior temporal cortex, leads to reading and naming deficits. Additional evidence implicating this region in linguistic processing comes from functional neuroimaging studies of reading in normal subjects and subjects with developmental dyslexia. Here we test whether the visual component of reading is essential for activation

Visual and language processing deficits are concurrent in dyslexia.

Research has demonstrated that dyslexic subjects have language processing problems. More recent evidence indicates that dyslexic subjects also suffer a low-level visual information processing deficit. Little evidence is available to indicate the extent to which dyslexic subjects simultaneously show a visual and language processing dysfunction. In this study, 35 normal and 35 dyslexic subjects aged from 7.9 to 14 years of age were compared on three reading process variables, a visual processing score, a test of phonological coding and a test of language comprehension, each of which were shown t…

Language and development in FG syndrome with callosal agenesis.

The FG syndrome is characterized by unusual facies, sudden infant death, developmental delay, and abnormalities of the cardiac, gastrointestinal, and central nervous systems. No longitudinal data on development in surviving patients are currently available. Serial evaluations of a patient with FG syndrome, whose sole central nervous system anomaly was agenesis of the corpus callosum, showed a consistent pattern over time. Specific language impairments in syntactic and pragmatic-semantic areas are emerging. These findings represent the first detailed data on which expectations for children with…

Psychoanalytic reflections on a particular form of language distortion.

A female obsessive patient communicated with her sister via a distortion of the Hebrew language, in which she masculinized the feminine gender second person pronoun and certain nouns. This treatment of words is analyzed in terms ranging from the concrete to the metaphoric uses of language. Lacan's emphasis on the meaning of the word is explored and is seen as an amplification rather than a replacement of the object relations approach to language and metaphor.

A further study of language function in callosal agenesis.

A subset of the tests of language ability administered by M. Dennis (1981, Brain and Language, 12, 33-53) was given to two adult acallosal patients. One of the patients studied showed widespread language deficits not restricted to the syntactic-pragmatic core as in Dennis' patient. The other showed a very specific deficit which does not encompass syntactic-pragmatic skills. The data does not support the view that the corpus callosum is necessary for the normal development of specific language functions.

Language disintegration in dementia: effects of etiology and severity.

The speech characteristics on a standardized picture description task of 26 subjects with presumed senile dementia of the Alzheimer type (SD … ified by SRD) has a disproportionate effect on syntax (assuming that focal lesions of the posterior language zone have been excluded). The speech characteristics of the mild SDAT subjects showed similarities to those of anomic or semantic aphasia whereas the speech of the more advanced SDAT subjects showed similarities to Wernicke aphasia or transcortical …

Specific language disability--a medical or an educational problem?

Specific learning disabilities are often regarded as a medical problem for which medication or other treatment and investigation is requested. However, when problems of concentration are the result rather than the cause of the learning problem, medication is not indicated. This applies to specific language disabilities, which handicap seemingly normal children who do not understand or comprehend the spoken or written word and are therefore failures in a language-orientated classroom. The cause may be an organic disorder of the left hemisphere or a dominant right hemisphere, but the management …

Praxis and language: the extent and variety of apraxia in aphasia.

This quantitative study of apraxia in aphasics establishes the extent and characteristics of apraxia in various aphasic groups, the differences between various categories of praxis, and the correlation between praxis and language parameters. Broca's aphasics have more severe apraxia than Wernicke's aphasics even though their comprehension is significantly better. Apraxia, however, correlates best with comprehension deficit and secondly with the severity of aphasia. Among the nonverbal parameters, drawing shows the highest correlations. Our study confirms the prominence of facial apraxia in Bro…

The effectiveness of operant language training with autistic children.

Studies of operant language therapy with autistic children have indicated that behavioral techniques may be of value in increasing the language skills of such children. A review of recent studies, however, suggests that in the absence of adequate experimental controls, misleading conclusions may be drawn about the effectiveness of treatment. It is also apparent that the effects of therapy vary according to the linguistic competence of the children involved, and to the different aspects of language ability being taught. The implications of recent findings for our understanding of the basic defi…

I Hope for More Resources Like This: Exploring the Role of Speech-Language Pathologists in American Sign Language-English Bilingual Education.

PURPOSE: This study explores how speech-language pathologists (SLPs) use the American Sign Language (ASL)-English bilingual approach to support Deaf students, with a focus on how their understanding of language, collaboration, and professional roles has evolved. METHOD: Using a qualitative approach, semistructured interviews were conducted with five SLPs across multiple school sites who had experience implementing the Bilingual Grammar Curriculum (BGC). Emic coding and thematic analysis were used to identify recurring concepts and shifts in thinking. RESULTS: This research highlights five em…

Exploring the relationships among language input-output, vocabulary knowledge, and English Reading development of emergent bilinguals in dual language immersion programs.

Learning to read in a second language (L2) poses unique challenges for emergent bilingual (EB) children. This study examines whether Spanish-English EB children's vocabulary skills in Spanish and English mediate the relationship between their language input-output and English (L2) reading skills. The sample included 338 Latina/o EB children in first and third grades enrolled in dual-language immersion (DLI) programs in the United States. Results from the multivariate regression model revealed differences in language input-output at home, with third graders reported using more English than firs…

Argument ordering in simple sentences is affected by age of first language acquisition: Evidence from late first language signers of ASL.

Research on the language acquisition of deaf individuals who are exposed to accessible linguistic input at a variety of ages has provided evidence for a sensitive period of first language acquisition. Recent studies have shown that deaf individuals who first learn language after early childhood, late first-language learners (LL1), do not comprehend reversible Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) sentences. The present study analyzed 478 signed productions elicited with pictures depicting simple events with one or two arguments by 28 signers. The argument order patterns of native signers converged with on…

Development of a culturally enhanced caregiver-facilitated language nutrition intervention "+Language is Medicine" to address developmental delay in Diné (Navajo) toddlers.

INTRODUCTION: Developmental Delay (DD) is highly common in American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN; Indigenous) toddlers and leads to high … h quality early intervention that includes effective parent training. There are many evidence-based language facilitation interventions often used in Early Intervention programs. However, in communities in rural parts of the Navajo Nation where there are limited services and resources, infants and toddlers with early signs of DD are often missed and do not …

Phonological Working Memory and Sentence Production in School-Age Children with Typical Language, Dyslexia, and Comorbid Dyslexia and Developmental Language Disorder.

PURPOSE: Little is known about the relationship between sentence production and phonological working memory in school-age children. To fill this gap, we examined how strongly these constructs correlate. We also compared diagnostic groups' working memory abilities to see if differences co-occurred with qualitative differences in their sentences. METHOD: We conducted Bayesian analyses on data from seven- to nine-year-old children (n = 165 typical language, n = 81 dyslexia-only, n = 43 comorbid dyslexia and developmental language disorder). We correlated sentence production and working memory sc…

Promoting Reading Achievement in Children With Developmental Language Disorders: What Can We Learn From Research on Specific Language Impairment and Dyslexia?

Purpose Specific language impairment (SLI; see also developmental language disorder) and dyslexia are separate, yet frequently co-occurring disorders that confer risks to reading comprehension and academic achievement. Until recently, most studies of one disorder had little consideration of the other, and each disorder was addressed by different practitioners. However, understanding how the two disorders relate to each other is important for advancing theories about each disorder and improving reading comprehension and academic achievement. The purpose of this clinical focus article is to inte…

Generative artificial intelligence in medical oncology: A clinically focused narrative review of large language, vision-language, and agentic artificial intelligence systems.

Rapid advances in cancer genetics and genomics, pathophysiology, diagnostics, and therapeutics have substantially increased the complexity of clinical oncology. Integrating large and diverse data streams into timely, patient-specific decisions provides a compelling rationale for incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into cancer care. Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) encompasses several classes of models capable of generating new content. This clinically focused review concentrates on GenAI applications based primarily on large language models (LLMs) and vision-language models (V…

Using large language models for extracting and pre-annotating texts on mental health from noisy data in a low-resource language.

Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) have opened new possibilities for developing conversational agents (CAs) in various subfields of mental healthcare. However, this progress is hindered by limited access to high-quality training data, often due to privacy concerns and high annotation costs for low-resource languages. A potential solution is to create human-AI annotation systems that utilize extensive public domain user-to-user and user-to-professional discussions on social media. These discussions, however, are extremely noisy, necessitating the adaptation of LLMs for fully au…
