Oral care and the risk of bloodstream infections in mechanically ventilated adults: A review.

RATIONALE: Bacteraemia, defined as the presence of viable bacteria in the circulating blood can result in bloodstream infection, which is one of the most frequent and challenging hospital-acquired infections. Bacteraemia occurs in healthy populations with manipulation of the oral mucosa, including toothbrushing. Oral care is commonly administered to mechanically ventilated patients, it is important to determine whether this practice contributes to the incidence of bacteraemia. This paper reviews the literature on the link between the manipulation of the oral cavity and the development of bacte

Identification and prioritization of potential therapeutic molecules against LpxA from Acinetobacter baumannii - A computational study.

A. baumannii is a ubiquitously found gram-negative, multi-drug resistant bacterial species from the ESKAPE family of pathogens known to be the causative agent for hospital-acquired infections such as pneumonia, meningitis, endocarditis, septicaemia and urinary tract infections. A. baumannii is implicated as a contributor to bloodstream infections in approximately 2% of all worldwide infections. Hence, exploring novel therapeutic agents against the bacterium is essential. LpxA or UDP-N-acetylglucosamine acetyltransferase is an essential enzyme important in Lipid A biosynthesis which catalyses t

Whole genome sequencing data of Candida krusei, the pathogen causing Candidaemia, from Department of Parasitology Culture Collection, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia.

Candida krusei is a Candida non-albicans species with a high prevalence, which causes candidaemia. Current treatment guidelines include fluconazole as a primary therapeutic option for the treatment of these infections; however, it is only a fungistatic against Candida spp., and both inherent and acquired resistance to fluconazole have been reported. C. krusei species is also reported as the only Candida sp. which has an intrinsic resistance factor to fluconazole. Therefore, in dealing with antifungal resistance, it is necessary to develop new antifungal agents that are efficient in the treatme

Eficacy of Cryotherapy in the Prevention of Oral Mucosistis in Adult Patients with Chemotherapy.

Oral mucositis (OM) is a common side effect of cancer therapies. It causes ulcerative, painful lesions in the oral cavity that can provoke malnutrition, increased risk of infection, longer hospital stays, and seriously affect the quality of life. Cooling the mucosa with oral cryotherapy (OC) during and/or after chemotherapy is the most accessible and tolerable intervention available. The aim of this study is to define the efficacy of OC for preventing OM induced by chemotherapy/radiotherapy in adult patients with cancer. Secondary endpoints include associated problems as pain. A systematic sea

Contemporary review of percutaneous therapy for tricuspid valve regurgitation.

Introduction: Moderate to severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is a poor prognostic factor regardless of right ventricular function. However, a majority of patients are managed medically rather than undergoing isolated tricuspid valve surgery due to high in-hospital mortality. Percutaneous therapy in the form of transcatheter tricuspid valve repair or replacement is an attractive option for this high risk multimorbid cohort.Areas covered: A literature search was performed for tricuspid valve repair or replacement using MEDLINE, Current Contents Connect, Google Scholar, EMBASE, Cochrane library,
