Learned helplessness is the psychological state that results when an individual who is unable to exercise reasonable mastery in one situation incorrectly assumes that he or she is then unable to exercise reasonable control in other situations as well. This may complicate the delivery of health interventions since the individual with learned helplessness may assume that no care provider or treatment intervention can be of assistance. Elderly patients with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias are not immune to this stance of learned helplessness. This paper presents one possible psychosocial

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess psychological and lifestyle risk factors for premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and their association with DNA methylation.
METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in Shanghai (2017-2022), including 304 controls and 160 newly diagnosed cases with POI (diagnosed within the past 6 months). Cumulative adverse life events were assessed using the life event scale (LES), and genome-wide DNA methylation was evaluated in whole blood-derived DNA obtained from a sub-sample.
RESULTS: The median total event score for POI patients and control individuals was 4

Trauma during childhood and adolescence is a common event among people with a serious psychological disorder. Few studies assess a wide range of stressors for this population. This is surprising given that these stressful events are implicated in poorer outcomes related to course and treatment of mental health problems. This study of 214 people with serious mental illness examines the prevalence of childhood traumas, perceived neighborhood problems, discrimination, chronic strains, negative life events, and daily hassles. We use regression analyses to determine if these stressors are associate

OBJECTIVE: This study examined cancer survivors' experience of and responses to challenges and stressors associated with everyday living. The impact of daily stressors on quality of life concerns and cortisol patterns was also investigated.
METHOD: Participants included 111 cancer survivors who participated in a national telephone diary study of daily experiences (National Study of Daily Experiences). Their responses were compared with those of 111 sociodemographically matched participants with no cancer history using a multilevel modeling approach. Over an 8-day period, participants complete

This study describes the experiences and resources of male cancer patients in Finland during the trajectory of their illness. A semi-structured interview schedule was used to collect data on falling ill with cancer, on periods of treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy), and on convalescence. The participants (n=8), aged 42-64 (mean=53) were interviewed in a clinic setting in connection with a check-up visit. The interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed for qualitative content analysis. The male cancer patients described their experiences through the illness trajectory in term

The relationship between compliance of moderately or severely burned patients with suggested plans of treatment and outcome was examined retrospectively by reviewing medical records. This review was limited to patients admitted to our facilities between 1977 and 1982 with burns in the moderate or major burn category and admitted within seven days of their injuries. The outcome measures included the following: limitation in range of motion (ROM), hypertrophic scar formation, total days of care required, quality of life, and impact of event. Noncompliance was related to the outcome as measured b

The human behavior and its social determinants are critical variables for understanding the etiology, treatment, and prevention of many disorders previously attributed to biological substrates. Among the many categories of human behavior to receive special attention from health researchers and practitioners are life events, coping responses and emotional state. The relation between these categories constituted a particular field of investigation. This relationship rather than forcing to focus on disease, distress, disability, and other failures in human functioning, permits to address health,

The present study explored factors associated with barriers to current employment among 199 low-income, primarily Black American men seeking job services. The study took place in an urban setting located within the upper Midwest region of the U.S., where the problem of Black male joblessness is both longstanding and widespread. Recent research suggests that Black male joblessness regionally and nationally is attributable to myriad macro- and micro-level forces. While structural-level factors such as migration of available jobs, incarceration patterns, and racism have been relatively well-studi

OBJECTIVE: The authors investigated the relationship of cognitive and coping characteristics to stressful life events at the time of relapse in patients with recent-onset paranoid schizophrenia.
METHOD: Over 6 years, the authors collected data on 41 schizophrenic outpatients aged 18-28 years at recruitment. The patients were rated prospectively every 2 weeks with the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms, Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms, Global Assessment of Functioning Scale, and life events measures. This study explored how attachment orientations are associated with perceptions of life events. Although there is evidence that life and relationship contexts have the potential to alter attachment anxiety and avoidance across the lifespan, life events often exert only modest or transient effects on attachment orientations. The current study (N = 1943; Mage = 19.61; 74.1% women) examined associations between attachment orientations, perceptions of whether life events might engender personality changes, and perceptions of 20 hypothetical life events across nine dimensions (e.g., emotional signi

OBJECTIVES: Major life stress is a well-established precipitating factor for insomnia disorder. However, not all stressors are equally harmful, and determining which events pose the greatest risk to sleep is not well-understood. Identifying high-impact stressors on insomnia will deepen our understanding of how this disorder develops, particularly among those most vulnerable to insomnia. The present study explored a wide range of major life events to identify which stressors were associated with incident insomnia disorder.
METHODS: This study assessed a large cohort (N = 2887) of U.S. adults a

BACKGROUND: Stressful life events (SLEs) are associated with increased risk of depression or anxiety. Coping mechanisms may moderate this relationship but little is known on this topic in young people or in Latin America.
AIM: To investigate whether coping strategies predict odds of depression and/or anxiety and moderate the relationship between SLEs and depression and/or anxiety in young people in Peru, Lima and Bogotá.
METHOD: Using case-control data from people aged 15-24, we used logistic regression to examine associations between coping mechanism, SLEs and caseness for depression or anx

Psychological trauma is a prevalent mental health concern, with most individuals experiencing at least one traumatic event in their lifetime. Early leaves from inpatient settings are a pertinent challenge among persons who have experienced trauma and may reflect unmet care needs. This study examined patterns of early leaves among persons with trauma from inpatient care in Ontario, Canada. All records for individuals who have experienced trauma with an index admission of over 72 h between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2019 were included (N = 11,043). Logistic regression using generalized equ

BACKGROUND: In response to extreme life events, individuals may experience not only distress but also positive transformation, known as posttraumatic growth (PTG). Only a few studies have investigated PTG following traumatic loss. This is the first study to investigate promotive factors-loss-related, intrapersonal and interpersonal factors-immediately after the loss and 6 months later.
METHODS: A total of 36 participants (58% female, Mdn = 49 years) were invited by psychosocial crisis intervention teams. Data collection took place immediately after a traumatic loss (T1) and 6 months later (T2

BACKGROUND: Both recent negative life events (RNLEs) and lifestyle factors were associated with depressive symptoms, but it is unclear whether adopting a healthy lifestyle can mitigate the association between RNLEs and depressive symptoms. We aim to explore the modifying role of adopting a healthy lifestyle in the association between RNLEs and depressive symptoms.
METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 4,278 participants aged 18-70 years. RNLEs includes 12 common negative life events that have occurred in the past year, and were classified as low RNLEs (0 RNLEs), intermediate RNL

AIM: The extent to which recent potentially traumatic events (PTEs) hinder the recovery from pre-existing mental health problems is largely unknown. The same applies to the extent to which non-recovery from pre-existing mental health problems increases the risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The aim of the present study is to gain insight in these effects.
METHODS: Data were extracted from six annual surveys of the Dutch population-based Victims in Modern Society (VICTIMS) study. Of the adult respondents who participated in two subsequent surveys (labeled T1 and T2, n = 6942), those

BACKGROUND: Few population-based data sources fully recognise the intersections between stressful events, social health issues, and cannabis use in pregnancy, and little is known about sequelae for women's mental health.
METHODS: We draw on two waves of population-based data for 344 families participating in the Aboriginal Families Study longitudinal cohort. We examine women's mental health in the first year postpartum and when children were aged 5-9 years in context with life experiences and use of cannabis in pregnancy.
OUTCOMES: One in five women (19·5%) used cannabis during pregnancy (wi

BACKGROUND: Body mass index (BMI) during adulthood has been associated with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), however, patterns of body size across the adult life course have not been studied extensively. We comprehensively evaluated the association between adiposity across adulthood and PDAC.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective analysis of 269 480 (162 735 males, 106 745 females) National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study participants, aged 50-71 years (1995-1996) who self-reported height and weight history. Participants were followed through December 31, 2011. We examin

BACKGROUND: Research has shown ample evidence of how birth order affects health; however, these studies focus on specific health outcomes and ages.
OBJECTIVE: We provide a comprehensive picture of the effects of birth order on health disparities over the life course.
METHOD: We study the effects of birth order from birth to age 70 on hospitalizations, visits to open care facilities and mortality using Swedish register data from 1987 to 2016. We identify the effects by comparing siblings within the same family.
RESULTS: We find that firstborns have worse health at birth. In adolescence, the
