Immune checkpoint analysis in lip cancer.

The aim of this study was to establish whether PD-L1, PD-1, and markers of the tumor microenvironment (CD4, CD8, FOXP3) could have a prognostic value in squamous cell carcinoma of the lip (LSCC). In patients with histologically proven LSCC, tumor specimens were stained using immunohistochemistry (for PD-1, PD-L1, CD4, CD8, and FOXP3) on paraffin-embedded tissues. Patients with (N+) and without (N-) nodal metastasis were stratified and matched to each other according to prognostically relevant clinicopathological parameters. 58 patients (29 N+ and 29 N-) were included. PD-L1 expression was posi

Pointless spatial modeling.

The analysis of area-level aggregated summary data is common in many disciplines including epidemiology and the social sciences. Typically, Markov random field spatial models have been employed to acknowledge spatial dependence and allow data-driven smoothing. In the context of an irregular set of areas, these models always have an ad hoc element with respect to the definition of a neighborhood scheme. In this article, we exploit recent theoretical and computational advances to carry out modeling at the continuous spatial level, which induces a spatial model for the discrete areas. This approa

Fusuma Sliding Flap for Lip Reconstruction of Lower Lip Cancer.

Lower lip cancer is typically treated with surgical excision, and this frequently results in a large defect and severe aesthetic problems. Local flap reconstruction is suitable for restoring appearance and function, and it causes less surgical stress than a vascularized free flap. The Fusuma sliding flap is a local flap technique introduced by Kasai et al in 2008. Here, the authors report their use of this method for lip reconstruction in a 94-year-old Japanese female after the removal of a cancerous mass.

Holistic reconstruction of mandible defect, lower lip and chin sensation, and smile reanimation in an advanced gum cancer patient: A case report.

Facial deformity, facial paralysis, and sensory loss are inevitable after some head and neck tumor resection and reconstruction, especially in high stage cancer. To overcome these obstacles, we present a case of T4a gum cancer patient (41-year-old) who received holistic reconstruction of the mandible defect via an osteo-peroneal-artery-perforator combined flap for defect coverage and cross-mental nerve graft for lower lip and chin sensation at the primary stage, followed by ipsilateral facial nerve (lower trunk) innervated gracilis functioning free muscle transplantation for facial reanimation

[Microcystic adnexal carcinoma: A case report].

We report a case of microcystic adnexal carcinoma in a 80-year-old woman. This is a rare malignant adnexal cutaneous tumor with glandular and follicular differentiation, rare, often asymptomatic, with late diagnosis and slow growth, locally aggressive and rarely metastatic. The distinction with other benign and malignant skin tumors is difficult.

KERATOACANTHOMA OF THE UPPER LIP: REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE AND REPORT OF CASE WITH CENTRAL UPPER LIP RECONSTRUCTION.

Keratoakanthoma (KA) is a common non-melanoma skin tumor of sun-exposed skin. Recently it has been classified as a highly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, based on the evidence of local destruction, tissue invasion and malignant transformation with metastatic spread described in the medical literature. Lower lip KA is not uncommon on lower lip, and quite rare on upper lip. The authors present a case of 78-year-old Caucasian male patient with a rapidly growing keratotic tumor of the central region of upper lip. After complete surgical excision, single-stage reconstruction of the defect w

Primary Oral Mucosal Melanomas - Two Case Reports and Comprehensive Literature Review.

Oral melanoma (OM) occurs from activated or genetically altered epidermal melanocytes. There is no scientific evidence that OM can be linked to physical, chemical and thermal irritation, or to other risk factors of the oral cavity. According to fi gures from various countries, OM accounts for 0.2% to 7.5% ( Japan) of all cases of melanoma of the skin and mucous membrane. The male to female ratio of OM is 2:1. About 80% of OMs are located in the mucosa of the palate and maxillary gingiva. This paper presents two cases of oral mucosal melanoma of the upper and lower lips in women aged 62 and 59

Giant congenital lower lip nevus restored by local advanced skin flap: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: A congenital lower lip nevus is common, but a lower lip length lesion of more than 40% is hard to excise simply, without any distortion. We designed a lower lip bilateral advanced skin flap to restore the wound surface after completely and successfully removing the nevus. CASE PRESENTATION: A 13-year-old Mongolian girl was referred to us with a giant congenital lower lip nevus. The lesion covered nearly half of her lower lip. We designed a lower lip bilateral advanced skin flap to restore the wound surface, after completely removing the nevus without advanced repair. CONCLUSION

The Role of sentinel lymph-node biopsy in managing lip squamous cell carcinoma patients without clinical evidence of nodal metastasis.

AIM: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lip is a common oral malignancy. Lymph node metastasis occurs lately in the natural history of the disease but it is associated with poor outcome. Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is an option that determines the potentially affected lymph nodes especially in clinically negative-node patients. The study aims to determine the feasibility of SLNB as a reliable staging tool in N0 stage lip SCC patients. METHODS: Eighteen patients with N0 stage lip SCC were enrolled in the study. They were subjected to SLNB using the injection of the radiocolloid materia

[Epidemiologic analysis of lip cancer in a 15-year period in the region surrounding Varazdin].

The author presents the epidemiological analysis of lip cancer in the sub-region of Varazdin. The parameters such as sex, age, histological type, localization and occupation of all recorded patients with lip cancer were analyzed. Amongst the 103 recorded patients with lip cancer there were 81 (78.64%) men and 22 (21.36%) women. The upper lip involvement was detected in 18 (17.46%) and the lower lip in 85 cases (82.54%). There were 12 examples of basalioma (17.46%), 90 of planocellular carcinoma (87.37%) and a single example of melanoma (0.97%). The majority of patients were aged 60 [29 (28.15%

Re-innervation pattern of heterotopically transposed lingual flaps.

Pedicled tongue flaps have proved to be an effective method of repairing defects due to tissue loss in the oral cavity. No histological investigations have been done in respect of the longterm fate of these flaps after section of their nutrient pedicle. The histological pattern of the re-innervation process of heterotopically transposed lingual flaps in the oral cavity is evaluated in this paper. Two cases are reported: in the first, the tongue flap was used to repair the vermilion of the lower lip and in the second, for the closure of a post-traumatic defect of the hard palate. The histologic

Multiple simultaneous primary oral squamous cell carcinomas: a previously unreported presentation.

The simultaneous occurrence of a second oral squamous cell carcinoma, or in rare cases more, is well known, but to our knowledge, the presentation of 5 primary oral cancers at once has not previously been reported. We discuss this exceptional case and offer a possible explanation for its cause.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Lip-A Review of Squamous Cell Carcinogenesis of the Mucosal and Cutaneous Junction.

BACKGROUND: The lip is an anatomic junction for 2 disparate groups of cancer. Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is a common malignancy with a favorable prognosis, whereas oral-mucosal squamous cell carcinoma (omSCC) is associated with significantly higher rates of nodal disease and worse outcomes. The squamous cell carcinoma of the lip (lip SCC) is more aggressive than cSCC but less aggressive than omSCC. However, work-up and treatment vary between specialties. OBJECTIVES: The authors sought to review and compare the risk factors and clinical behavior of cSCC, omSCC, and lip SCC, revie

Unresectable infantile myofibroma discovered in utero.

The authors present a case of a proliferative nodule located beneath an infant's lower lip that was initially discovered on prenatal ultrasound and fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Biopsy revealed a smooth muscle actin-positive spindled cell proliferation with hemangiopericytoma-like vessels consistent with infantile myofibromatosis (IM). Since the location prevented surgical management, the clinicians opted to observe the lesion. Ultimately, the lesion fully regressed on its own confirming conservative management is an option for isolated IM.

Acral necrotizing mycosis fungoides.

A 65-year-old male with long-standing acral "eczema" and patches of mycosis fungoides suddenly developed a transformed, necrotizing ulcerative cutaneous T-cell lymphoma manifesting as necrotic lesions of the toe and lip. The tumor had brown and/or black eschars on the surface and grew multiple opportunistic organisms. Markers CD3, Epstein-Barr virus-encoded small RNA, and T-cell receptor g gene rearrangement were positive, with CD4, 8, 30, 56, and TIA-1 negative. In spite of initial response to radiation, the patient succumbed to infection within 3 months.
