Photobiomodulation therapy was more effective than photobiomodulation plus arginine on accelerating wound healing in an animal model of delayed healing wound.

The combined and individual influences of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) and arginine on wound strength, stereological parameters, and gene expressions of some related growth factors in ischemic and delayed healing wounds in rats were analyzed. We divided 108 rats into six groups: control, lower energy density (LOW)-PBMT, 2% arginine ointment (Arg 2%), LOW-PBMT + Arg 2%, high energy density (HIGH)-PBMT, and HIGH-PBMT + Arg 2%. First, we generated an ischemic and delayed healing wound model in each rat. We examined wound strength, stereological parameters, and gene expressions of basic fibro

Does laser photobiomodulation prevent hyposalivation in patients undergoing head and neck radiotherapy? A systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION: Head and neck radiotherapy can cause hypofunction of the salivary glands. Many studies report that laser photobiomodulation (PBM) is able to minimize radiation-induced hyposalivation, yet there is no consensus about its effects. OBJECTIVE: To carry out a meta-analysis of controlled clinical trials that used PBM to prevent radiation-induced hyposalivation. METHODS: A systematic search was performed through Embase, Medline/PubMed, Cochrane, EBSCO, Scopus, LILACS and Web of Science databases. The strategy included comparisons of the effect of PBM with placebo/clinical follow-up on

Minocycline-induced hyperpigmentation: rapid resolution after 755nm alexandrite picosecond laser treatment.

Minocycline-induced pigmentation (MIP) is an infrequent complication of minocycline therapy, with four subtypes each with distinct clinical features and histologic staining patterns. MIP may resolve following discontinuation of minocycline therapy or it may persist indefinitely. A 64-year-old Caucasian male presented with a 6 month history of progressive blue-gray facial pigmentation distributed symmetrically over his face. One session utilizing a 755 nm picosecond Alexandrite laser resulted in immediate and significant clearance of the pigment in all treated areas. Long-term follow-up at 2 ye

Effect of different treatments on recurrent aphthous stomatitis: laser versus medication.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common disease with ulcers in oral cavity which may trigger chewing, speaking, and swallowing difficulties to patients. Treatment of RAS is primarily aimed at pain relief and the promotion of wound healing. However, few agents have been found to have definite effect in the management of RAS and most of the medicinal products may cause adverse reactions or other disadvantages, which makes their clinical usage questionable. The purpose of this randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT) was to assess the clinical effect of diode laser and traditional medic

Light-based treatment of pediatric port-wine birthmarks.

Port-wine birthmarks (PWBs) are progressive vascular malformations with significant disfigurement and psychosocial morbidity; early light-based treatment has shown improved outcomes in the pediatric population. Somatic mosaic mutations underly the progressive nature of PWBs and explain the significant differences in response and heterogeneity of vessel architecture in the pediatric population when compared to the adult cohort. Here, we summarize a review of pediatric specific literature on the various light-based treatment modalities, including pulsed dye laser, near-infrared lasers, and inten

Fluorescence biomodulation in the management of canine interdigital pyoderma cases: a prospective, single-blinded, randomized and controlled clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Interdigital pyoderma is a common multifactorial, inflammatory disease of the canine interdigital skin. Lesions commonly become infected secondarily. In addition to management of the underlying cause, management of the chronic inflammatory changes in the interdigital skin created by secondary infection and by the release of keratin into deep tissues is required. Fluorescence biomodulation appears to modulate the inflammatory process in dermatological disorders and has shown promise in preliminary studies evaluating its use in superficial and deep pyoderma in dogs. Photobiomodulation therapy on bothrops snake venom-induced local pathological effects: A systematic review.

Bothrops snakebite treatment is antivenom therapy, which is ineffective in neutralizing the severe local effects caused by these envenomations. There are evidence that photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) has emerged as a promising tool to counteract the venom-induced local effects. The purpose was to write a narrative review of the literature about PBMT as a treatment for Bothrops snakebites. We reviewed articles indexed in PubMed, SCOPUS and Scientif Direct database with filter application. Included studies had to investigate local effects induced by Bothrops snake venom in any animal model usi

Combined pulsed dye laser and fiberoptic Nd-YAG laser for the treatment of hypertrophic port wine stain.

UNLABELLED: The hypertrophic Port Wine Stain (PWS) is only partially and superficially treated with the Pulsed dye laser (PDL) because of its limited depth of penetration. We used combined PDL and fiberoptic 1444-nm Nd-YAG laser to treat a case with hypertrophic PWS. METHOD: After tumescent anesthesia, few holes were made by a 16-gauge needle on different sides of the lesion. The fiberoptic tip of 1444-nm Nd-YAG laser was inserted within the holes and was pushed forward while triggering. In a fan pattern and by a back and forth movement, the subcutaneous and deep dermal areas were coagulated.

Photobiomodulation Triple Treatment in Peripheral Nerve Injury: Nerve and Muscle Response.

BACKGROUND: Muscle preservation or decrease in muscle degeneration and progressive atrophy are major challenges in patients with severe peripheral nerve injury (PNI). Considerable interest exists in the potential therapeutic value of laser phototherapy (photobiomodulation) for restoring denervated muscle atrophy and for enhancing regeneration of severely injured peripheral nerves. As previously published, the laser phototherapy has a protective and immediate effect in PNI. Laser phototherapy in the early stages of muscle atrophy may preserve the denervated muscle by maintaining creatinine kina

Effect of photobiomodulation on endothelial cell exposed to Bothrops jararaca venom.

Bleeding is a common feature in envenoming caused by Bothrops snake venom due to extensive damage to capillaries and venules, producing alterations in capillary endothelial cell morphology. It has been demonstrated, in vivo, that photobiomodulation (PBM) decreases hemorrhage after venom inoculation; however, the mechanism is unknown. Thus, the objective was to investigate the effects of PBM on a murine endothelial cell line (tEnd) exposed to Bothrops jararaca venom (BjV). Cells were exposed to BjV and irradiated once with either 660- or 780-nm wavelength laser light at energy densities of 4 an

Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw: An Autofluorescence-Guided Surgical Approach Performed with Er:YAG Laser.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to propose an autofluorescence (AF)-guided surgical approach performed with Er:YAG laser and Nd:YAG low-level laser therapy (LLLT). BACKGROUND DATA: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) therapy remains an unresolved problem. The proposed conservative and surgical treatment regimens are associated with contradictory success rates. However, the increased experience with MRONJ management suggests that surgical therapy can halt disease progression, and can allow a histology-based diagnosis of osteonecrosis.
