The parasitic nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and B. timori cause a dreadful disease in humans known as lymphatic filariasis, which afflicts more than 120 million people worldwide. As per recent epidemiologic estimates on prevalence of W. bancrofti and B. malayi, about 428 million people are at risk, with 28 million microfilaria carriers and 21 million clinical cases spread out in 13 States and 5 Union Territories of India. The Indian subcontinent that comprises Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka harbours 50 per cent of the world's lymphatic filarial disease burden.

Adenocarcinoma of the bladder is a rare form of malignancy accounting for fewer than 2% of bladder tumours. It is most commonly a result of direct invasion from prostatic, rectal or gynaecological primaries and less commonly presents from distant haematological or lymphatic metastasis. We report a rare case of oesophageal carcinoma metastasising to the bladder. It involves a 71-year-old man with progressive dysphagia and diagnostic computerised tomography findings of thickening in the oesophagus, bladder and common bile duct. Subsequent endoscopic biopsies of the oesophageal and bladder abnorm

Splenic cyst(s) may be noted as an incidental finding on conventional imaging techniques, or as a result of evaluation of a patient with left upper quadrant pain, left shoulder pain, abdominal enlargement, or splenomegaly. Lymphangioma of the spleen is an extremely rare and benign neoplasm in adults, which is characterized by cystic dilatation of the lymphatic vessels in splenic parenchyma. This report describes a case of multiple splenic lymphangiomas in a 41-year-old female. She underwent abdominal ultrasonography for a health check-up. She had no symptoms, and physical examination did not r

The authors have studied 18 cases of patients presenting podiatric disorders as well as a moderate varicose or lymphatic involvement. The functional symptomatology, dominated by antero-lateral leg pain, was important enough to disturb professional or leisure activities. By preferring the study of walking abnormalities (varus effect, dominant varus or equal varus-valgus instability) and the search for an elective involvement of the lateral peroneus brevis, an accurate podiatric diagnosis was made along with its ensuing therapy: adequate fitting of shoes and prescription of well adjusted orthese

Accessory breast is a frequently seen developmental breast abnormality, commoner among Asians than Caucasians. This ectopic breast tissue shares many similarities as the normal breast tissue, and although subjected to the same pathological processes, accessory breast carcinoma is rare. As locations of the accessory breast may be variable, detection of pathological lesions through clinical examinations and standard diagnostic tools (i.e., mammogram) can be difficult. Staging and management should be tailored-made according to the location of the accessory breast as well as its known pattern of

Kaposiform lymphangiomatosis (KLA) is a rare proliferation of abnormal lymphatic vessels often complicated by pleural/pericardial effusions and a consumptive coagulopathy that may lead to life threatening hemorrhage. Establishing the diagnosis is challenging due to the clinical heterogeneity and variable findings in laboratory values, radiographic features, and pathologic characteristics. We report three patients who had slowly progressive symptoms and presented with pleural or pericardial effusions, evidence of a consumptive coagulopathy and anemia. Despite being a rare and challenging diagno

Congenital pulmonary lymphangiectasia (CPL) is a rare lymphatic pulmonary abnormality. CPL with respiratory distress has a poor prognosis, and is frequently fatal in neonates. We report a case of pneumonectomy for CPL in a newborn. An infant girl, born at 39 weeks' after an uncomplicated pregnancy, exhibited respiratory distress 1 hr after birth, which necessitated intubation and aggressive ventilator care. Right pneumonectomy was performed after her symptoms worsened. Histologic examination indicated CPL. She is currently 12 months old and developing normally. Pneumonectomy can be considered

Chyloptysis is a very rare clinical finding. We describe a 44-year-old man who presented with cough and milky-white sputum. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed white sputum, which originated from the right B(6) bronchus. The finding of elevated triglyceride levels in his sputum led to the diagnosis of chyloptysis. He had a surgical history of ligation of the thoracic duct for idiopathic chylopericarditis 7 years-previously. He also suffered from postoperative bilateral empyema. Since then, his pleural cavity has been adhered bilaterally. It is thought that his abnormal postoperative lymphatic flo

Chylothorax is a potentially life-threatening form of pleural effusion containing lymphatic fluid. Its etiology may be either traumatic (either post-operative or a direct result of injury), a congenital abnormality of the thoracic duct, or non-traumatic. This is a case report of a left iatrogenic chylothorax, which developed 2 days after internal jugular vein catheterization, in a patient with 50% total body surface area (TBSA) burns. This complication was treated successfully by tube thoracostomy and oral supplementation with a low fat, high carbohydrate, high protein diet. Further the author

A 72-year-old woman visited a clinic for anorexia and general fatigue but no particular abnormality was detected by routine examination at that time. Thereafter, she experienced gradually increasing dyspnea and chest X ray showed right pleural effusion. Idiopathic chylothorax was diagnosed due to the milky effusion with a high concentration of triglyceride (2618 mg/dl) and no apparent causative disease. Irrespective of treatments including dietary restriction, drainage of the pleural space, and somatostatin injections, her effusion did not reduce. The leakage of lymph fluid from the right post

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Superficial vascular anomalies are complex disorders characterized by abnormal vascular growth. Next-generation sequencing has recently identified somatic genetic alterations associated with these malformations, offering new insights for targeted treatments. However, tissue biopsies for genetic testing can be invasive and difficult to obtain, especially in arteriovenous malformations (AVM) with hemorrhagic risks. A liquid biopsy, a non-invasive approach, offers a promising solution by detecting genetic mutations in cell-free DNA. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the

Primary intestinal lymphangiectasia (PIL), also known as Waldmann's disease, is an exudative enteropathy resulting from morphologic abnormalities in the intestinal lymphatics. In this article, we describe a 12-year-old boy with PIL that led to protein-losing enteropathy characterized by diarrhea, hypoalbuminemia associated with edema (serum albumin level: 1.0 g/dL), and hypogammaglobulinemia (serum IgG level: 144 mg/dL). Severe hypoalbuminemia, electrolyte abnormalities, and tetany persisted despite a low-fat diet and propranolol. Everolimus (1.6 mg/m(2)/day) was added to his treatment as an a

Pancreatitis, in common with many other upper abdominal diseases, often leads to pleuropulmonary complications. Radiological evidence of pleuropulmonary abnormality was found in 55% of 58 cases examined retrospectively. The majority of such abnormalities are not specific for pancreatitis; but a particular category of pleural effusions, rich in pancreatic enzymes, is a notable exception. A patient with this type of effusion, complicated by a spontaneous bronchopleural fistula and then by an empyema, is reported. The literature relating to pancreatic enzyme-rich pleural effusions (pathognomonic

The aim of this study is to assess whether early cervical lymphatic obstruction is associated with a sonographically detectable dilatation of the ventricular system in the 1st trimester of pregnancy. In particular, the objective is to assess whether fetuses with non-immune hydrops fetalis (NIHF), cystic hygroma, or enlarged nuchal translucency (NT) have a greater atrial width/biparietal diameter (AW/BPD) ratio than normal at time of the combined first trimester screening scan. This retrospective study included 96 first trimester fetuses (33 normal and 63 with various degree of cervical lymphat

INTRODUCTION: The present study aimed to assess the craniofacial CT imaging features for differentiating between Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) and generalized lymphatic anomaly (GLA).
METHODS: Seven patients with GSD and four patients with GLA were included in this study. All patients underwent CT examinations that encompassed the craniofacial bones. The presence, distribution, and type of craniofacial osteolysis were assessed. The clinical symptoms that were associated with craniofacial osteolysis were also reviewed.
RESULTS: Craniofacial osteolysis including cranial osteolysis was seen in fou

OBJECTIVES: We review the clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic features of cystic lymphangioma of the middle ear, and discuss the developmental etiology and management of such a lesion.
METHODS: We present an unusual location for the development of a cystic lymphangioma with emphasis on etiology, clinical implications, and current treatment.
RESULTS: A 10-year-old girl presented with a mass involving the medial surface of the right tympanic membrane. T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a hyperintense lesion in the anterior-superior middle ear cavity without evidence of v

The murine paucity of lymph node T cell (plt) mutation leads to abnormalities in leukocyte migration and immune response. The causative defect is thought to be a loss of secondary lymphoid-organ chemokine (SLC) expression in lymphoid tissues. We now find that the plt defect is due to the loss of both SLC and EBI-1 ligand chemokine (ELC) expression in secondary lymphoid organs. In an examination of the plt locus, we find that commonly used inbred mouse strains demonstrate at least three different haplotypes. Polymorphism at this locus is due to duplications of at least four genes, three of them

BACKGROUND: An increase in thyroid cancers, predominantly papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), has been recently reported in children.
METHODS: The histopathology of 28 consecutive PTCs from the northeast United States was reviewed. None of the patients (ages 6-18 years; 20 females, 8 males) had significant exposure to radiation. Nucleic acid from tumors was tested for genetic abnormalities (n = 27). Negative results were reevaluated by targeted next-generation sequencing.
RESULTS: Seven of 27 PTCs (26%) had neurotrophic tyrosine kinase receptor (NTRK) fusion oncogenes (NTRK type 3/ets variant

Chemotherapy-induced cachexia causes severe metabolic abnormalities independently of cancer and reduces the therapeutic efficacy of chemotherapy. The underlying mechanism of chemotherapy-induced cachexia remains unclear. Here we investigated the cytarabine (CYT)-induced alteration in energy balance and its underlying mechanisms in mice. We compared energy balance-associated parameters among the three groups of mice: CON, CYT, and PF (pair-fed mice with the CYT group) that were intravenously administered vehicle or CYT. Weight gain, fat mass, skeletal muscle mass, grip strength, and nocturnal e
