Based on results from the first eight months of follow-up, the vaccine appeared well-tolerated and immunogenic. The prevalence of schistosomiasis among recent refugees from sub-Saharan Africa in Italy is unknown. This is a retrospective review of Afric … sitive in 47/373 individuals (12.6%). We found a particularly high positivity rate in subjects from Mali (72.1%) and Ivory Coast (48%). This "hidden epidemic" of schistosomiasis cannot be longer neglected, considering the risk of severe complications, and the effective and inexpensive treatment available.

BACKGROUND: Epidemics of meningococcal disease in Africa are commonly detected too late to prevent many cases. We assessed weekly meningitis incidence as a tool to detect epidemics in time to implement mass vaccination.
METHODS: Meningitis incidence for 41 subdistricts in Mali was determined from cases recorded in health centres (1989-98) and from surveillance data (1996-98). For incidence thresholds of 5 to 20 cases per 100000 inhabitants per week, we calculated sensitivity and specificity for detecting epidemics, and determined the time lapse between threshold and epidemic peak.

Twenty immigrants from Mali and West Senegal were treated in Paris. Onchocerciasis was diagnosed by six skin snips using a Holth punch. Ivermectine was given in a single oral dose: ten patients were given 50 mcg/kg, three were given 75 mcg/kg and seven received 100 mcg/kg. No patients had ocular symptoms. To support Liberia's response to the ongoing Ebola virus (EBOV) disease epidemic in Western Africa, we established in-country advanced genomic capabilities to monitor EBOV evolution. INTRODUCTION: Isolated areas of hypopigmented skin can be a manifestation of mycosis fungoides. This is a rare clinical form with a particular clinical course and histology which has been described only in black subjects.
CASE REPORT: Over a 10-year period, a 28-year-old woman from Mali developed non-infiltrated hypopigmented and discretely squamous macules involving the entire body. The diagnosis of mycosis fungoides was made on pathology evidence of epidermotropic lymphocyte infiltration with a few small nests. PUVA led to rapid regression of the lesions.
