Condyle and mandibular bone change after unilateral condylar neck fracture in growing rats.

Unilateral fracture of the condylar neck in immature subjects might lead to mandible asymmetry and condyle remodelling. A rat model was used to investigate mandibular deviation and condylar remodelling associated with condyle fracture. 72 4-week-old male rats were randomly divided into three groups: an experimental group (unilateral transverse condylar fracture induced surgically), a sham operation group (surgical exposure but no fracture), and a non-operative control group (no operation). The rats were killed at intervals up to 9weeks after surgery, and outcomes were assessed using various me

Use of a temporary screw for alignment and fixation of sagittal mandibular condylar fractures with lateral screws.

This study introduced and evaluated the clinical application of a temporary and lateral screw technique for open reduction and internal rigid fixation of sagittal mandibular condylar fractures. A preauricular approach was used to expose the fracture. A temporary screw was used to assist in the anatomical reduction, and a lateral lag screw in combination with a lateral position screw was used for internal rigid fixation. Six adult patients with sagittal condylar fractures and more than 5mm condylar height shortening were treated. The treatment outcomes were followed up clinically and radiograph

Fractures of the mandibular condyle: a review of 466 cases. Literature review, reflections on treatment and proposals.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of condylar fractures is high. Condylar fractures can be extracapsular (condylar neck or subcondylar) or intracapsular, undisplaced, deviated, displaced or dislocated. Treatment depends on the age of the patient, the co-existence of other mandibular or maxillary fractures, whether the condylar fracture is unilateral or bilateral, the level and displacement of the fracture, the state of dentition and the dental occlusion, and the surgeon's experience. PURPOSE: This report presents the experience acquired in the treatment of 466 condylar fractures over 7 years, revie

Mandibular osteomyelitis and fracture successfully treated with vascularised iliac bone graft in a patient with pycnodysostosis.

Pycnodysostosis is a rare sclerosing bone disorder. Complications such as osteomyelitis and fracture of the jaws are not uncommon and difficult to treat. Treatment by reconstruction with a reconstruction plate and an iliac bone graft fails in most cases. We report a case of pycnodysostosis with osteomyelitis and fracture of the mandible that was successfully treated with vascularised iliac bone graft. We believe that this procedure is the best method for the treatment of this condition.

Management of root fracture of mandibular permanent lateral incisor in mixed dentition--a case report.

Management of root fracture of mandibular lateral incisors during mixed dentition with developing crowding in a ten year old boy by bilateral surgical extraction. Migration of permanent canine into the extracted region of lateral incisors was favourable with minimal spacing in between the rest of the teeth. The near normal parallel position of the roots of the permanent canines was achieved by early treatment planning of extraction of the lateral incisors instead of treating by other modalities which have a poor prognosis.

Severe osteoarthrosis after fracture of the mandibular condyle: a clinical and histologic study of seven patients.

The factors that induce complications subsequent to fractures of the mandibular condyle have long been controversial. A clinical and histologic study of seven patients (nine temporomandibular joints [TMJs]) who suffered from severe TMJ problems subsequent to condylar fractures showed that the complications were related to comminution of the condyle, sagittal fracture of the condyle, and subcondylar fracture dislocation. Alterations in these TMJs all involved secondary osteoarthrosis. Additionally, aseptic necrosis, bifid deformity of the condyle (two of the three sagittally fractured condyles)

[A trans-parotid approach to the osteosynthesis of fractures of the mandibular condyle. A study apropos of 30 cases].

The authors report a homogeneous series of 30 cases with fractures of the mandibular condyles treated by internal fixation with a mini-plaque via the transparotidial route. The patient were treated between 1987 and 1992, with a minimum follow-up of one year. The transparotidial route has the reputation of being dangerous because of the proximity of the facial nerve and the poor vascular supply to the condyle. It is described in detail. Indications are exclusively extra-articular fractures. Complications were observed although no definitive facial nerve paralysis was seen. The authors conclude

Finite element analysis of stress in mandibular molars repaired after fractured instrument removal.

BACKGROUND: This study assessed stress distributions in simulated mandibular molars filled with various materials after the removal of fractured instruments from the apical thirds of the root canals. METHODS: Finite element models of the mesial and distal root canals were created, where fractured instruments were assumed to be removed using a staging platform established with a modified Gates-Glidden bur (Woodpecker, Guangxi, P.R. China). Each canal was treated with different materials: Biodentine (Septodont, Saint Maur-des-Fosses, France), mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), and gutta-percha.
