PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcome of the vascularized fibular free flap for the reconstruction of mandibular resections involving the condylar segment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Six patients underwent mandibular resection including the condyle. Two patients were diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, whereas the other 4 presented fibrous dysplasia, mandibular osteoradionecrosis, mandibular ameloblastoma, and giant cell granuloma of the mandible. All of them underwent condylar reconstruction by means of transplant of the free fibular flap. In all the cases, the fibula

The two-phase reconstruction of the mandible with a 2.7-mm-Martin-reconstruction-plate creates a tumor free period that is followed by bone grafting to the embedded plate. We have treated 61 patients following this pattern from 2000 to 2005, follow-up was done in 56. 14 patients had received radiotherapy of 70 Gy. 43 plates healed in without any complications. Until 2005 bone grafting had been performed in 18 patients, in ten patients the plate had been removed.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the unsatisfactory outcomes observed in mandibular reconstruction procedures attributed to improper condylar positioning in the Temporomandibular Joint. It also proposes a systematic classification for post-reconstruction condylar positioning dissatisfaction.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 337 patients who underwent tumor removal and mandibular reconstruction with vascularized osteocutaneous flaps. Reconstruction techniques included conventional surgery (43.3%) and 3D technology-guided procedures (56.7%). Evaluation utilized preoperative

The article presents a literature review and a clinical case of an adenomatoid odontogenic tumor in a 3-year-old child. After the surgical treatment, an morphological and immunohistochemical (with antibodies to Ki-67, CK7, CK 14 and CK 18) studies of the remote material were performed. The histological features of the neoplasm are shown, and its origin from the odontogenic epithelium is substantiated.

Ameloblastoma is the most common benign odontogenic tumour of the jaw bones and it exhibits a wide range of histopathological patterns. Papilliferous keratoameloblastoma (PKA), a rare variant of ameloblastoma, is characterized by the presence of papilliferous proliferations of the odontogenic epithelium, along with surface keratinization and keratin accumulation that may occur within the stroma. This report presents a rare case of PKA in a 44-year-old male patient who presented due to a recurrent exophytic growth in the right posterior mandible. A panoramic radiograph showed a well-defined mul

BACKGROUND: Cementoblastoma is a rare odontogenic tumor characterized by the formation of osteocementum-like tissue on a tooth root directly by neoplastic cementoblasts. Although it is categorized as benign, it has a high potential for growth with a certain degree of recurrence risk. However, there are only a few studies describing the features of recurrent cementoblastoma. The diagnosis of recurrent cementoblastoma is challenging not only due to its cytological atypia but also because of its large size and multicentric growth pattern. These characteristics suggest a potential for malignancy.

BACKGROUND: POT is a relatively newly described benign odontogenic tumor with very few cases registered to date. We present the 1st case of Primordial odontogenic tumor (POT) from Sub-Saharan Africa with unique clinicopathological features; also, this is the first case to report POT's existence as a Hybrid Odontogenic lesion (HOL), with a pertinent review of the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: This was a 17-year-old patient who presented with slow-growing, painless posterior mandibular swelling. The imaging revealed a well-defined, unilocular, expansile, lytic lesion with internal calcific foc

INTRODUCTION: Fibroma ossificans are usually well-defined tumours, but are rarely encapsulated. The choice of radical or conservative treatment is a challenge for the maxillofacial surgeon. The aim of this case report was to describe the particularities of the management of a case of ossifying fibroma of the mandible.
CASE REPORT: The patient was a 17-year-old housewife with a history of caesarean section. She presented with a mandibular swelling that had been evolving for 6 years, with no other functional signs and no change in general condition. Exobuccal examination revealed a voluminous s

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the submandibular gland is a relatively rare malignancy of the oral and maxillofacial region. It is an insidious disease characterized by regional spread, perineural invasion, and potential distant metastases. Because of the aggressive nature of this lesion, it is often impossible to completely excise the tumor, necessitating combination therapy of surgery and radiation. The consequences of surgical ablation coupled with radiation treatment can result in complex considerations in the dental care of these patients. This case report outlines a patient who has recovere

Primary intraosseous carcinoma (PIOC) or Primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma (PIOSCC) is a rare carcinoma, which arises within the jaws without connection to the oral mucosa and presumably develops from a remnant of odontogenic epithelium. It is a rare case which arises by direct transformation of odontogenic epithelial rests in the jawbone, including the epithelial rests found within the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone, remnants of the dental lamina, and the reduced enamel epithelium surrounding an unerupted/impacted tooth. Herein, we report a case of a 76-year-old male patien

Clear cell squamous cell carcinoma (CCSCC) is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma, first reported by Kuo, who described 6 cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the skin of the head and neck. CCSCC is composed of cells with clear cytoplasm, which Kuo attributed to the accumulation of intracellular fluid and not the presence of glycogen, lipid, or mucin. This case describes a 59-year-old woman who presented with an exophytic, hemorrhagic lesion on the posterior mandibular gingiva of 2 months' duration. Histologic examination revealed dysplastic stratified squamous epithelium showing transiti

This report describes the case of a patient with mesenchymal chondrosarcoma in the region of tooth #18 that mimicked apical periodontitis. Forty-five days after endodontic treatment, gingival swelling and intense pain were observed. The endodontist suspected a furcation lesion, and the treatment option that the patient chose was extraction of the tooth. Seven days after suture removal, a rapidly growing swelling was seen in the region. The patient was referred to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, who recommended an incisional biopsy after evaluating imaging and clinical findings. Microscopic

Burkitt's lymphoma is a tumour that most often affects the jaws, especially in endemic areas of Africa. In non-endemic areas, the jaws are affected in about 15-18% of cases. A case is presented which demonstrates the significance of jaw lesions in the disease. The history and pathogenesis of the disease also are discussed.

Two cases of large adenomatoid odontogenic tumor seen recently in Senegal are thought to be the first cases of this type reported in West Africa. One patient was a 25 year old woman and the other an 11 year old boy, the clinical history and lesions being identical in both cases. Simple enucleation appeared to be the treatment of choice in view of the constantly reported benign nature of these tumors. It is difficult, or almost impossible however, to differentiate this tumor from dentigerous cyst on radiology, justifying routine minute pathologic examination of all operated paradental cysts.

The paper covers diagnoses indicating removal of bone from the iliac crest, positioning, an approach to the iliac crest, and techniques for removing bone. The hazards incident to the removal of spongiosa, cortical substance, or spongeous-cortical bone chips are described. Haemorrhages from the spongiosa must be staunched carefully with wax plugs or fibrin glue (Tissucol1). Complications such as perforation, hernia, hyperaesthesia, muscular atrophy, and changes in contour are discussed, as well as suitable measures to avoid complications.

A myxoma of the mandibles in an adult female Macaca mulatta is described. The left mandible was markedly enlarged by the tumor, which extended from the symphysis to the temporomandibular joint. The tumor had extended a short distance across the symphysis into the right mandible. It was composed of a glistening mucinous material. Radiographs of the tumor showed a large expansile radiolucent lesion of the left mandible without soft tissue involvement. Light microscopy demonstrated capillaries, stellate shaped cells with processes up to 15 mu long, very few other cell types, and an amorphous grou

A case report of a dentigerous cyst of the mandible with respiratory epithelium has been described. A review of the literature shows this to be only the fourth case reported. The three most current theories to explain this phenomenon have been presented.

Primordial cysts (keratocysts) have been shown to have a greater tendency to recurrence than other jaw cysts. Some radiological features may assist in establishing the diagnosis. Thirteen mandibular primordial cysts have been studied radiologically in detail. Characteristic features are extension along the medulla with minimal expansion except in young children. Margins are generally sharply demaracated and either smooth or scalloped. Cortical resorption occurs before expansion. The cysts may displace adjacent teeth, particularly when unerupted, but generally do not produce root resorption. Th
