A child with extreme growth failure, dysmorphic features, hypoparathyroidism, and abnormal skeletal survey was studied. He was a product of first degree consaguineous marriage who had intrauterine growth retardation and presented at 14 days of age with hypocalcemic tetany with normal cardiovascular system and immune function. Endocrine evaluation after infancy revealed defective growth hormone (GH) secretion in 2 provocation tests and lack of clinical and testosterone response to human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) therapy.

A 15-year-old girl and her 13-year-old brother had high myopia, mottled retinas with nonrecordable electroretinographic responses OU, and mental retardation. Both siblings had normal pupillary reactions to light, normal levels of serum amino acids, no nystagmus, no obesity, and no polydactyly. A consanguineous marriage of the patients' parents was found. We believe that the association of high myopia, retinal dystrophy, and mental retardation noted in these siblings may be uncommon.

Lipoid proteinosis was diagnosed in two daughters of a consanguinous marriage on the basis of genetic, clinical, light microscopic and ultrastructural findings. Hyaline material accumulation, thickening of the basal laminae and the resulting typical onion skin phenomenon were observed. In addition to the pathognomonic cutaneous mucosal findings, unusual manifestations such as persistence of deciduous teeth (in one case), oligodontia and intracerebral calcifications were observed. In one patient, the intracerebral calcifications caused epileptic seizures.

Low sexual desire is discussed within the context of the relationship in which it occurs, with emphasis on each partner's intrapsychic issues as they intersect with the interpersonal issues between them. The conceptualization of the problem is based in object relations theory, whereas treatment involves systems theory and gestalt and experiential psychotherapy. Relational sexuality and intimacy in marriage are presented as foundations for treatment procedures. The therapy techniques are illustrated by case examples.

Three siblings suffering from recurrent vomiting, hypotonia, hyperpnea, dehydration, and ketoacidosis were diagnosed as having ketotic hyperglycinemia secondary to propionic acidemia. They also had leukopenia and thrombocytopenia, and two of them had anorectal malformations, one an imperforate anus with rectoperineal fistula, and the other an ectopic anus. The occurrence of propionic acidemia and anorectal anomalies in three siblings out of eight children in a consanguineous marriage suggests an autosomal recessive genetic inheritance.

Non syndromic Anonychia congenita or congenital absence of finger and toe nails is a rare disorder known to occur due to autosomal recessive inheritance of mutation in the R-spondin-4 gene. We present a case of a 32 year old female born of a non-consanguineous marriage presenting with complete absence of finger and toe nails since birth and similar presentation in family members over four generations, suggesting an autosomal dominant inheritance.

The authors reported a 41-year-old female patient with EEM (ectodermal dysplasia, ectrodactyly and macular dystrophy) syndrome with hypotrichosis, teeth anomaly, split hand complex and retinal changes with prominent pigmentations located in the posterior pole of the retina. Retinal degeneration had shown minimal progression during 11 years. A longer follow-up period was necessary to make a definite diagnosis of these fundus changes. This is an isolated case born from a consanguineous marriage.

Using nationally representative data, it is shown that marital unions are relatively stable in Nigeria. Remarriage rates are high so little time is lost between unions. Consequently, the fertility of women who have experienced marital disruption is only slightly lower than for those in stable unions. Their slightly lower parity may be a function of a high incidence of reproductive impairment, which is a major reason for divorce and separation in Nigeria.

Wahring et al. argue that men are more dependent than women on romantic relationships for emotional support and intimacy. We propose a testable implication of this asymmetry: if women benefit less from relationships, they should be choosier about entering them. Evidence from personality and dyadic studies supports this prediction and suggests productive extensions of the authors' framework.
