Paternal and maternal psychological distress and adolescent health risk behaviors: The role of sensitive periods.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent health risk behaviors are linked to poor physical and mental health outcomes. While past research shows that maternal psychological distress predicts those behaviors, we know less about the role of paternal psychological distress and the role of sensitive periods. METHODS: Using 11,128 data from families (50.5% female children) from the UK's Millennium Cohort Study, we examined the role of timing of exposure to paternal and maternal psychological distress in engagement in health risk behaviors (smoking, alcohol use, binge drinking, and sexual activity) at age 14. Pate

A systematic review and meta-analysis of heat exposure impacts on maternal, fetal and neonatal health.

Climate change has severe and wide-ranging health impacts, especially for vulnerable groups. Despite growing evidence of heat-associated adverse maternal and neonatal health outcomes, there remains a lack of synthesis quantifying associations and identifying specific risk periods. We systematically reviewed the literature on heat impacts on maternal, fetal and neonatal health and quantified impacts through meta-analyses. We found 198 studies across 66 countries, predominantly high income (63.3%) and temperate climate zones (40.1%), and 23 outcomes. Results showed increased odds of preterm birt

Maternal coffee consumption and biomarkers of reproductive health in young, adult sons: a cohort study.

It has been proposed that poor semen quality may have its origins from fetal programming due to environmental factors. We investigated whether maternal coffee consumption during early pregnancy was associated with biomarkers of reproductive health in adult sons in the Fetal Programming of Semen Quality (FEPOS) cohort. In 2017-2019, 1058 young men provided a semen and blood sample and self-measured their testis volume. Daily maternal coffee consumption was reported by the mothers around gestational week 17. We estimated relative percentage differences with 95 % confidence intervals (CI) for sem

Building a growing genomic data repository for maternal and fetal health through the PING Consortium.

BACKGROUND: Prenatally transmitted viruses can cause severe damage to the developing brain. There is unexplained variability in prenatal brain injury and postnatal neurodevelopmental outcomes, suggesting disease modifiers. Discordant outcomes among dizygotic twins could be explained by genetic susceptibly or protection. Among several well-recognized threats to the developing brain, Zika is a mosquito-borne, positive-stranded RNA virus that was originally isolated in Uganda and spread to cause epidemics in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. In the Americas, the virus caused congenital Zika syndrom

Ischemic Placental Disease: Epidemiology and Impact on Maternal and Offspring Health Along the Life Course.

Ischemic placental disease (IPD) is a constellation of obstetrical complications that include preeclampsia, placental abruption, and fetal growth restriction and affects 12% to 15% of pregnancies. The unifying pathophysiological mechanism that precedes all 3 complications is uteroplacental ischemia as a consequence of inadequate (or failure of) physiological transformation of the maternal uterine spiral arteries, endothelial cell dysfunction, and increased oxidative stress. This review summarizes the IPD literature, focusing on the epidemiology and risk factors, the effects of IPD on short and

Incorporating an intersectional gender approach to improve access to maternal and child health screening services.

BACKGROUND: In the Americas, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has promoted initiatives that aim at the elimination of mother-to-child transmitted diseases for over two decades. Although Guatemala has assumed the commitment to improve access and coverage of reproductive and perinatal services, the goals have not yet been reached. Often, the implementation of these efforts is hampered by complexities rooted in social, cultural, and environmental intersections. The objective of this work is to share our experience applying gender intersectionality as a methodological and analytical too

Clinical readiness for essential maternal and child health services in Kenya: A cross-sectional survey.

High rates of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in Kenya may be influenced by provider training and knowledge in emergency obstetric and neonatal care in addition to availability of supplies necessary for this care. While post-abortion care is a key aspect of life-saving maternal health care, no validated questionnaires have been published on provider clinical knowledge in this arena. Our aim was to determine provider knowledge of maternal-child health (MCH) emergencies (post-abortion care, pre-eclampsia, postpartum hemorrhage, neonatal resuscitation) and determine factors associat…

Coping with subjective and objective stress during a pandemic pregnancy: implications for maternal mental health.

The COVID-19 pandemic heightened prenatal maternal stress, a risk factor for poorer maternal and infant health. There was substantial variability, however, in the extent to which the stress of pandemic pregnancy influenced maternal mental health. Some of this variability may have been due to the different coping strategies used to manage pandemic stress. In this cross-sectional study of 7,383 pregnant women in the U.S. (M = 25.69 ± 8.71 weeks gestational age) recruited during the first and second U.S. waves of the COVID-19 pandemic, we examined associations of objective stressors, the subjecti

Demand and supply analysis for maternal and child health services at the primary healthcare level in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: The low demand for maternal and child health services is a significant factor in Nigeria's high maternal death rate. This paper explores demand and supply-side determinants at the primary healthcare level, highlighting factors affecting provision and utilization. METHODS: This qualitative study was undertaken in Anambra state, southeast Nigeria. Anambra state was purposively chosen because a maternal and child health programme had just been implemented in the state. The three-delay model was used to analyze supply and demand factors that affect MCH services and improve access to c

Possible effects of dietary advanced glycation end products on maternal and fetal health: a review.

Excessive accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in the body has been associated with many adverse health conditions. The common point of the pathologies associated at this point is oxidative stress and inflammation. Pregnancy is an important period in which many physiological, psychological, and biological changes are experienced. Along with the physiological changes that occur during this period, the mother maintaining an AGE-rich diet may cause an increase in the body's AGE pool and may increase oxidative stress and inflammation, as seen in healthy individuals. Studies have

An Exploratory Analysis of Maternal Health Variables Increasing the Severity of Congenital Heart Disease in Infants.

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart defects (CHD) are the most prevalent birth anomaly and leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Heart defects are often attributed to chromosomal abnormality or environmental factors, but most causes remain unknown. The purpose of this analysis was to explore maternal health variables and the relationships to birth outcomes in infants with CHD. METHODS: Secondary analysis of data from the Wisconsin Pediatric Cardiac Registry. RESULTS: Maternal history of CHDs (odds ratio [OR] = 2.38; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.42-3.98) and serious health co…

The clinical impact of maternal weight on offspring health: lights and shadows in breast milk metabolome.

INTRODUCTION: Pre-pregnancy overweight and obesity, depending on maternal nutrition and metabolic state, can influence fetal, neonatal, and long-term offspring health, regarding cardio-metabolic, respiratory, immunological, and cognitive outcomes. Thus, maternal weight can act, through mechanisms not fully understood, on the physiology and metabolism of some fetal organs and tissues, to adapt themselves to the intrauterine environment and nutritional reserves. These effects can occur by modulating gene expression, neonatal microbiome, and through breastfeeding. AREAS COVERED: In this paper, w
