AIM: This study investigates the relationship between maternal apical periodontitis (AP) and neonatal health.
METHODOLOGY: Twenty-four Wistar rats were assigned to three groups: control (CN), one induced apical periodontitis (AP1), and four induced apical periodontitis (AP4). Apical periodontitis was induced for all experimental groups. After 30 days, the rats were mated and sacrificed on the 21st day of gestation. Placental weight, maternal glycemia, insulinemia, insulin resistance, and placental protein levels were analysed. Neonates were evaluated for their number, weight, capillary glycem

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture, a treatment derived from traditional Chinese medicine, can effectively relieve the symptoms and improve pregnancy outcome in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS); however, its mechanism remains unclear. This study aimed at investigating whether acupuncture could improve endometrial angiogenesis and thus endometrial receptivity via activating PI3K/AKT pathway in PCOS rats.
METHODS: We established a rat model with PCOS, which was induced by DHEA. Acupuncture was performed every other day for 15 days, and the PI3K inhibitor (LY294002) was intraperitoneal inject

AIMS: Atherosclerosis is the dominant pathologic basis of many cardiovascular diseases. Large genome-wide association studies have identified that single-nucleotide polymorphisms proximal to Krüppel-like factor 14 (KLF14), a member of the zinc finger family of transcription factors, are associated with higher cardiovascular risks. Macrophage dysfunction contributes to atherosclerosis development and has been recognized as a potential therapeutic target for treating many cardiovascular diseases. Herein, we address the biologic function of KLF14 in macrophages and its role during the development

Acute effects of anthropogenic sounds on marine mammals, such as from military sonars, energy development, and offshore construction, have received considerable international attention from scientists, regulators, and industry. Moreover, there has been increasing recognition and concern about the potential chronic effects of human activities (e.g., shipping). It has been demonstrated that increases in human activity and background noise can alter habitats of marine animals and potentially mask communications for species that rely on sound to mate, feed, avoid predators, and navigate. Many human autoimmune diseases, including those of the thyroid gland, are affected by immune changes during pregnancy and the postpartum period. To investigate this influence, we have developed an animal model of pregnancy thyroiditis by using thyroglobulin (Tg)-induced experimental autoimmune thyroiditis (EAT). We now report a study of the post-partum period in mice with EAT. At 5 weeks postpartum, which was 9 weeks after the completion of a Tg immunization regime, the mean thyroiditis grade was significantly increased in the postpartum group from 0.23 to 0.43 (p<0.05) and the thyroiditis Ind

The discovery of the Rh blood group factor in humans was made using the red blood cells of rhesus monkeys. Because of its importance to human medicine and immunogenetics, this finding contributed greatly to the appreciation of the importance of nonhuman primates in research. It is now widely recognized that blood group incompatibility between mother and fetus can lead to differential fertility, fetal death, and hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN). The blood group systems of several nonhuman primate species have been studied in detail and found to be analogous, although not identical, to tho

The conservation of genetic diversity and control of inbreeding rate are fundamental factors in animal breeding programs, especially programs for adapted cattle breeds such as Caracu. However, there are still knowledge gaps regarding the population structure of this breed as a whole and the genetic dynamics in subpopulations, like closed populations reared in experimental farms in Brazil. Within this context, this study aimed to evaluate the population structure of the Caracu cattle breed by investigating inbreeding levels and genetic diversity based on pedigree analyses. Two populations were

Spermatogenesis, essential for male fertility, requires precise temporal and spatial regulation of gene expression to generate sperm that function robustly in vivo. Here, we show that testis-expressed 30 (Tex30) mRNA expression is induced by the germ-cell-specific transcription factors MEIOSIN and stimulated by retinoic acid 8 during meiotic prophase and is further upregulated in round spermatids. Despite this transcriptional activation, TEX30 protein is detected predominantly in the cytoplasm of step 16 spermatids, where it is highly enriched in the cytoplasmic lobe that is normally discarded

Egg-laying is one of the key aspects of female reproductive behavior in insects. Egg-laying has been studied since the dawn of Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism. The female's internal state, hormones, and external factors, such as nutrition, light, and social environment, affect egg-laying output. However, only recently, neurobiological features of egg-laying behavior have been studied in detail. fruitless and doublesex, two key players in the sex determination pathway, have become focal points in identifying neurons of reproductive significance in both central and peripheral nervous

Intrauterine alcohol exposure delays bone maturation and intensifies osteoporosis and fracture risk. As most studies emphasize the neurological aspects of intrauterine alcohol exposure, there is a lack of research on the implications pertaining to osseous tissue. Previous studies investigated these effects in fetuses, with limited studies on postnatal life. Postnatal studies are crucial since peak bone growth occurs during adolescence. This study aimed at assessing the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on the humerus proximal and distal growth plate chondrocytes in 3-week-old rats. Sprague

X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is the most common form of hereditary hypophosphatemic rickets. The genetic basis for XLH is loss of function mutations in the phosphate-regulating endopeptidase X-linked (PHEX), which leads to increased circulating fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). This increase in FGF23 impairs activation of vitamin D and attenuates renal phosphate reabsorption, leading to rickets. Previous studies have demonstrated that ablating FGF23 in the Hyp mouse model of XLH leads to hyperphosphatemia, high levels of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, and is not associated with the development

Male factors, including those of autoimmune origin, contribute to approximately 50% of infertility cases in humans. However, the mechanisms underlying autoimmune male infertility are poorly understood. Deficiency in autoimmune regulator (AIRE) impairs central immune tolerance because of diminished expression of self-antigens in the thymus. Humans with AIRE mutations and mice with engineered ablation of Aire develop multiorgan autoimmunity and infertility. To determine the immune targets contributing to infertility in male Aire-deficient (-/-) mice, Aire-/- or wild-type (WT) males were paired w

INTRODUCTION: Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS) disorder is one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality due to uncontrollable hemorrhage. The greatest risk factor for development of PAS is prior uterine surgery, frequently cesarean delivery. Despite considerable clinical knowledge, animal models of PAS are lacking. To address this, we used two surgical approaches to create uterine scarring in peripartum and non-pregnant CD-1 mice. Il10-/- mice, with a pro-inflammatory phenotype were also studied.
METHODS: In peripartum mice, a hysterotomy was performed to simulate a cesarean s

The aim of this work was to know the frequency and geographical distribution of genotypes and mating types of Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii species complexes isolated from human infections in Argentina during the period from April 2009 to April 2011. A multicenter study was conducted, in which 372 isolates were obtained from 61 laboratories throughout the country. Of those, 98.8% of the isolates belonged to the C. neoformans species complex and 1.1% to the C. gattii species complex. Genotype VNI (MATα) was the most frequently isolated (n=326, 87.6%), followed by VNII (MATα) (

OBJECTIVES: Research studies suggest that polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) may influence the composition of the oral microflora in women. This study aimed to investigate factors affecting the number of selected periopathogens in a young cohort of females with PCOS and to assess the association between oral hygiene, subgingival microbiome, gingival health, and metabolic and hormonal parameters.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two subjects with PCOS and twenty-three healthy controls aged 15-19 years were examined periodontally by a calibrated dentist. A real-time PCR method was used for the ident

Adverse environment during pregnancy could lead to maternal glucocorticoid overexposure in utero, and then induce the intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) and the programmed change in cartilage development. The transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) signaling pathway plays a crucial role in the process of chondrogenesis, cartilage growth, development, maturation, and phenotype maintenance. Our previous results had shown that prenatal caffeine exposure (PCE) could result in the damaged articular cartilage in offspring rats. However, whether this change could transmit to multiple generations was

A variety of environmental factors contribute significantly to age-related cognitive decline and memory impairment in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative diseases. Nutrition can alter epigenetics, improving health outcomes, which can be transmitted across generations; this process is called epigenetic inheritance. We investigate the beneficial effects of maternal resveratrol supplementation in the direct exposed F1 generation and the transgenerational F2 generation. The offspring was generated from females Senescence Accelerated Mouse-Prone (SAMP8) fed a resveratrol-enriched d

The hypothesis of fetal origins indicates that exposures in early development could induce epigenetic modifications in the male germ-line, affecting the susceptibility of adult-onset disease for generations. p,p'-DDE, the primary metabolite of persistent organochlorine pesticide DDT, is highly correlated with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and a strong contributing factor to type 2 diabetes. In our previous study, ancestral p,p'-DDE exposure could induce transgenerational impaired male fertility with sperm Igf2 hypomethylation. It is still unknown whether this germline epigenetic defect woul

Outcomes of kidney re-transplant recipients (RTR) were compared to primary recipients (FTR) from paired donor kidneys. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) database was used to identify deceased donors (n = 6266) who donated one kidney to an RTR and the mate kidney to an FTR between January 2000 to December 2010. As compared to FTR, RTR were younger (45 vs. 52 yr, p < 0.001) and had higher proportion of plasma reactive antibody >80 (25% vs 7%, p < 0.001). There were higher 0 mismatches in RTR (19% vs. 16%, p < 0.001). There were more pre-emptive transplants in RTR (24% vs. 21%,

Activating transcription factor 6α (ATF6α) is a sensor of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and increases the expression of ER chaperones and molecules related to the ER-associated degradation of unfolded/misfolded proteins. In this study, we used ATF6α knockout (ATF6α(-/-)) mice to clarify the role of ATF6α in the arginine vasopressin (AVP) neuron system. Although urine volumes were not different between ATF6α(-/-) and wild-type (ATF6α(+/+)) mice with access to water ad libitum, they were increased in ATF6α(-/-) mice compared with those in ATF6α(+/+) mice under intermittent water deprivation
