BACKGROUND: The accessory infraorbital foramen (AIOF) is an anatomical variation associated with the infraorbital foramen (IOF) and nerve (ION). Its occurrence and neural contents have clinical implications regarding failure of loco-regional anesthesia and risk of neural damage during surgical interventions involving the maxillary region. Thus, morphologic characterization of the AIOF and neural contents as well as the spatial relationships to the IOF are potentially useful for optimizing surgical procedures. Additionally, predictive features of the AIOF based on its relationship to IOF morpho

BACKGROUND: A recent study showed that 50% of patients who suffered from refractory neuralgia of the infraorbital nerve obtained satisfactory efficacy after pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) treatment. A pilot study showed that increasing the output voltage of PRF significantly improved the efficacy for trigeminal neuralgia; however, whether increasing the output voltage of PRF can improve the treatment outcomes for neuralgia of the infraorbital nerve is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of high voltage PRF treatment in comparison with standard voltage PRF for neuralgia of the

This study investigates which areas of the hard palate are innervated by the nasopalatine nerve and determines whether division of this nerve results in a detectable alteration in sensation. In the first part of this study the area of the hard palate from which sharp and blunt sensation could be evoked was investigated in 20 subjects after anaesthetising both anterior (formerly greater) palatine nerves. Sensation remained in the region of the incisive papilla and gingival margin of the central incisors in all patients and, in some, extended as far back as the first premolars. In the second par

We explored the molecular and behavioral effects of a perineural Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-mediated inflammatory priming on the development and maintenance of painful post-traumatic trigeminal neuropathy (PPTTN) following infra-orbital nerve chronic constriction injury (CCI-IoN) in rats. Rats were pretreated with repetitive perineural injections in the vicinity of the IoN of either LPS or vehicle (Vhcl) before being submitted to CCI-IoN. Orofacial pain-like behaviors (response to Von Frey Filament testing and spontaneous isolated face grooming) were measured during the period of LPS injections

A 51-year-old woman presented with 2 years of progressive left facial pain and numbness in maxillary nerve and mandibular nerve distributions. Symptoms were refractory to increasing doses of carbamazepine and gabapentin. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a left cerebellopontine angle nonenhancing mass, with diffusion restriction causing trigeminal nerve compression. Fast imaging employing steady-state acquisition sequences revealed a superior cerebellar artery loop in the angle between cranial nerve V and pons. The patient agreed to resection of the mass and microvascular decompression. Retros…

In this study, we used the quinacrine fluorescence technique to investigate the embryonic and early postnatal development of two distinct populations of Merkel cells in the rat whisker pad and the consequences of neonatal deafferentation on their subsequent development. Annular clusters of Merkel cells first appear in the epidermis near the caudal margin of the mystacial region between embryonic days E14 and E15 at dome sites located on horizontal ridges where the primordial vibrissal follicles develop. The development of these cells progresses in a caudorostral sequence across the whisker pad

OBJECTIVE: The analgesic efficacy of the novel anticonvulsant felbamate was evaluated in trigeminal neuralgia.
PATIENTS AND SETTING: This trial was offered in a tertiary referral center to three outpatients with severe pain who had exhausted other medical options, yet did not wish to undergo surgery.
INTERVENTIONS: Felbamate was prescribed as the sole analgesic for approximately 1 month.
OUTCOME MEASURES: A visual analogue scale was utilized.
RESULTS: Felbamate potently diminished the severe pain of trigeminal neuralgia and was well tolerated. The drug was withdrawn because of subsequent r

Herpes zoster ophthalmicus, resulting from varicella-zoster virus reactivation along the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve, is a rare but potentially sight-threatening condition that warrants awareness in clinical dental practice. A 36-year-old male presented 3 days after nonsurgical root canal treatment of the right maxillary first molar with severe migraine-like neuropathic pain, unilateral vesiculobullous eruptions along the V1 dermatome, periorbital edema, and conjunctival hyperemia. The treated tooth exhibited no remarkable clinical or radiographic findings. Dermatological evalu

The trigeminocardiac reflex (TCR) is clinically defined as the sudden onset of increased parasympathetic activity resulting from stimulation of the trigeminal nerve. This reflex increases parasympathetic tone and can lead to significant bradycardia and hypotension. We report the case of severe bradycardia and hypotension that occurred under general anesthesia during insertion of a cotton swab into the nasal cavity. A 57-year-old woman was scheduled for nasotracheal intubation for oral surgery, and following loss of consciousness, intubation was initiated using cotton swabs soaked in a solution

Gasserian ganglion block is an established treatment for trigeminal neuralgia. A landmark approach assisted by X-ray fluoroscopy is the most common method; however, visualization of the foramen ovale is difficult in some cases. Here we report two cases in which a novel technique using modern computed tomography (CT) fluoroscopy was employed. A 63-year-old woman suffering pain in the maxillary nerve area was treated by thermogangliolysis under CT fluoroscopy. The patient was positioned on a CT stage with the head in an overhanging position. The CT gantry was set at an oblique angle to obtain a …

Anencephaly, a severe neural tube defect characterized by the absence of major parts of the brain and skull, is a rare congenital disorder that has been observed in various species, including cats. Considering the uncommon appearance of anencephaly, this paper aims to present anencephaly in a stillborn male kitten from an accidental inbreeding using various paraclinical methods. Histological examination of tissue samples from the cranial region, where parts of the skull were absent, revealed the presence of atypical nerve tissue with neurons and glial cells organized in clusters, surrounded by

1. In forty-one out of forty-seven dogs under chloralose-urethane or Nembutal anaesthesia, mechanical stimulation of the nasal mucous membrane caused a reduction or inhibition of respiration, bradycardia, variable changes of arterial blood pressure, and a small rise in venous pressure.2. Simultaneous measurements of arterial and venous pressures, and also of blood flow in various arteries by means of an electromagnetic flowmeter indicate that the calculated vascular resistance increases in the intact limb, muscle, and skin, and the vascular beds of the vertebral, superior mesenteric, renal and
