Maxillary sinus septa: incidence, morphology and clinical implications.

This study was carried out to examine the incidence, morphology and clinical implication of antral septa. Out of 265 maxillary sinuses, 65 sinuses in atrophic maxillae were examined clinically during sinus floor elevation and 200 sinuses examined radiographically (CT), the latter being further subdivided into non-atrophic/dentate and atrophic/edentulous maxillary segments. Eighteen (27.7%) out of 65 clinically-examined maxillae and 32 (16%) out of the 200 non-preselected CT-examined maxillary sinuses showed antral septa. CT-topogram subclassification revealed 21 septa (13.2%) in 159 non-atroph

Age and gender assessment through three-dimensional morphometric analysis of maxillary sinus using magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Age and sex determinations are important tools in forensic odontology which help in the identification of an individual. Radiographic method of sex and age estimation is a noninvasive simple technique. Measurements of the maxillary sinuses can be used for the estimation of age and gender when other methods are inconclusive. Maxillary sinus dimensions were used as an important tool in the identification of unknown. AIM: This study aims to estimate age and sex using the dimensions and volume of the maxillary sinus in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This stu

[Endoscopic sinus surgery for unilateral chronic sinusitis].

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery has become an increasingly popular treatment for chronic sinusitis. This approach is aimed at re-establishment of ventilation and mucociliary clearance of the sinuses. However, some otolaryngologists believe that the Caldwell-Luc procedure should be routinely used for unilateral chronic sinusitis, because it is often associated with the maxillary sinus carcinomas. To evaluate the state of endoscopic sinus surgery for the diagnosis and treatment of unilateral chronic sinusitis, we analyzed the cases of 39 patients with unilateral chronic sinusitis who underwe

Sinusitis Following Reduction Malarplasty.

The aim of this paper was to search for reported cases of sinus infection following reduction malarplasty and present guidelines for the prevention of sinusitis. Two cases of maxillary sinusitis that developed after reduction malarplasty has been reported, which were treated with endoscopic sinus surgery. Histologically, thickness of the mucosal lining of the maxillary sinus (Schneiderian membrane) was 0.41 mm at sinus floor, and 0.38 mm at 2 mm above the floor. In functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), the uncinate process is removed, exposing the hiatus semilunaris. The anterior ethmoid…

Thermography for the Diagnosis of Acute Inflammation in the Paranasal Sinus.

Introduction  Although computed tomography scanning is the most common method for the diagnosis of sinusitis today, X-ray imaging is still used in outpatient clinics. Because X-ray imaging is beneficial for patients with severe sinusitis but not for those with mild sinusitis, an alternative method to visualize sinusitis without X-ray imaging is desirable. Objective  To study the possibility of using thermography to visualize sinusitis. Methods  In the present study, heat distribution on the faces of individuals with and without sinusitis was studied using thermography. Overall, 10 control subj

Displaced implants into maxillary sinus: report of cases.

Although the number of implant placement in the edentulous maxillary region is increasing, there are often some cases in which implants accidentally get displaced into maxillary sinus because of low bone quality, insufficient bone height, bone resorption after surgery, and improper treatment plan. Implants displaced into the maxillary sinus can cause some complications, including mucosal thickening and sinusitis; however, there are also many cases causing no symptoms at all. Treatment procedures for implants displaced into maxillary sinus are observation, removal of implants through intraoral

Computed tomography-based differential diagnosis of fungus balls in the maxillary sinus.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the computed tomography (CT) features of the maxillary sinus fungus ball and compared them with those of other ma … ency of calcification and partial opacification with an irregular surface on CT scans compared with maxillary sinusitis and other maxillary sinus lesions. Therefore, calcification and partial opacification with an irregular surface on preoperative CT scans suggest the maxillary sinus fungus ball as the first diagnostic consideration.

Determination of the Prevalence, Height, and Location of the Maxillary Sinus Septa Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography.

INTRODUCTION: Presence of the maxillary sinus septum would increase the risk of sinus membrane perforation during sinus floor elevation surgery. Three-dimensional radiographic techniques are recommended for the evaluation of the maxillary sinuses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study evaluated 946 maxillary sinuses using the cone beam computed tomography. Presence of septa, number, location, height, and orientation were evaluated and recorded in data forms. RESULTS: Of all patients, 44.8% had at least 1 septum; 36.8% had 1 septum in their right maxillary sinus, 27.4% in their le

Dental Pathophysiology of Odontogenic Sinusitis: Endodontic Infections.

Bacterial odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) arises from maxillary dental issues or oral procedures, and affects at least the maxillary sinuses, with or without other paranasal sinus involvement. It has been historically underreported, in contrast to more recent findings attributing 25-40% of chronic maxillary sinusitis to dental causes. Endodontic infections represent one of the most common causes of ODS. Endodontic factors like root canal infection and microbial proximity to sinus cavities play pivotal roles. Host immunological responses further shape disease severity and progression. This article …

Radiological study of the paranasal sinuses in lepromatous leprosy.

Thirty patients of lepromatous leprosy have been studied by radiological investigation for affection of paranasal sinuses. It has been found that leprosy involves all groups of sinuses and maxillary antrum is found to be more commonly affected. Diffuse hypertrophy type of lesion is more commonly recorded in maxillary antrum, in x-ray of paranasal sinuses. The clinical significance and importance of extension of disease in the sinuses is discussed in the light of available literature.

Topography of the rabbit paranasal sinuses as a prerequisite to model human sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Anatomical studies of the rabbit paranasal cavities are impelled by the increasing interest in the rabbit model to investigate human sinusitis. Although several such studies have already been performed, the topography of the rabbit dorsal conchal and maxillary sinuses is described ambiguously and the existence of the ethmoidal, frontal and sphenoidal sinuses is controversial. METHODOLOGY: The paranasal cavities were investigated using corrosion casting, gross and histological cross-sectioning, and micro-CT scanning of rabbit noses followed by computerized three-dimensional reconst

A comparison between nitric oxide output in the nose and sinuses: A pilot study in one volunteer.

From a study of nitric oxide (NO) output in the nose and sinuses it seems that: (i) the results obtained regarding the regulation of NO output in the nose do not necessarily apply to the sinuses; (ii) the results obtained for one group of sinuses may not apply to another; and (iii) NO output in the sinuses does not behave as one would expect if it serves to protect against infection.A pilot study was undertaken in one subject to determine whether the control of NO output in the nose differs from that in the sinuses.NO output was measured by aspirating different gaseous concentrations of oxygen

Endoscopic management to different isolated maxillary fungal pathologies: case series of a tertiary hospital.

Isolated maxillary fungal pathologies involve a variety of clinical entities. These include invasive and non-invasive variants, where each has a unique pathogenesis, clinical manifestation, and approach for management. The aim of this case series is to investigate the several ways that fungal infections of the maxillary sinus might present, with the approach to diagnose and manage these conditions. Several discrete maxillary fungal diseases were studied, including fungal ball, acute fulminant invasive fungal sinusitis, allergic fungal sinusitis, and chronic invasive fungal sinusitis at a hospi

Deep learning-based fully automatic segmentation of the maxillary sinus on cone-beam computed tomographic images.

The detection of maxillary sinus wall is important in dental fields such as implant surgery, tooth extraction, and odontogenic disease diagnosis. The accurate segmentation of the maxillary sinus is required as a cornerstone for diagnosis and treatment planning. This study proposes a deep learning-based method for fully automatic segmentation of the maxillary sinus, including clear or hazy states, on cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) images. A model for segmentation of the maxillary sinuses was developed using U-Net, a convolutional neural network, and a total of 19,350 CBCT images were use
