Why do we move our eyes while trying to remember? The relationship between non-visual gaze patterns and memory.

Non-visual gaze patterns (NVGPs) involve saccades and fixations that spontaneously occur in cognitive activities that are not ostensibly visual. While reasons for their appearance remain obscure, convergent empirical evidence suggests that NVGPs change according to processing requirements of tasks. We examined NVPGs in tasks with long-term memory (LTM) and working memory (WM) requirements. Experiment 1 yielded significantly higher eye movement rate (EMR) in tasks requiring LTM search than in a WM task requiring maintenance of information. Experiment 2 manipulated accessibility of items in stud

Exclusionary states in older age and their temporary effects on cognitive decline.

BACKGROUND: Exclusion from social relations (ESR) describes severe states of social isolation in older age that may be associated with poorer cognitive outcomes. Previous studies on cognitive aging provide mixed evidence for the effects of social isolation and loneliness in shaping cognitive outcomes among older adults. In addition, the joint consideration of social isolation and loneliness remains rarely used in the empirical examination of cognitive aging, whereas an exclusionary perspective is missing. METHODS: Using a sample (N = 7,830) from the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in

Associations between polygenic risk for obesity, body mass index and cognitive performance: Age as moderating factor.

Obesity has been associated with cognitive impairment, yet the contribution of obesity-related genetic liability to cognition across the lifespan remains unclear. Here, we investigated associations between body mass index (BMI), obesity polygenic risk score (PRS), and cognitive performance in 796 individuals from the FOR2107 Marburg-Münster Affective Disorders Cohort Study (MACS). Cognitive function was assessed using a neuropsychological test battery covering working memory, episodic memory, attention, processing speed, executive function, and crystallized intelligence. Multivariate analyses …

Dynamic Amyloid and Metabolic Signatures of Delayed Recall Performance within the Clinical Spectrum of Alzheimer's Disease.

Associations between pathophysiological events and cognitive measures provide insights regarding brain networks affected during the clinical progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, we assessed patients' scores in two delayed episodic memory tests, and investigated their associations with regional amyloid deposition and brain metabolism across the clinical spectrum of AD. We assessed the clinical, neuropsychological, structural, and positron emission tomography (PET) baseline measures of participants from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative. Subjects were classified

Inflammatory Markers May Inform the Effects of Electroconvulsive Therapy on Cognition in Patients with Depression.

INTRODUCTION: The neurobiological mechanisms underlying the acute cognitive effects of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) remain poorly understood. Prior research has shown that proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, TNF-α, IL1-β, and IL-10 may interfere with cognitive functioning. Interestingly, immunomodulation is one of the proposed modes of action of ECT. This study investigates whether changes of peripheral levels of IL-6, TNF-α, IL1-β, and IL-10 are related to changes in cognitive functioning following ECT. METHODS: In the week before and 1 week after an acute course of ECT, 62 patients s

Fractionating the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test: Distinct roles of large-scale cortical networks in prodromal Alzheimer's disease.

Successful episodic memory calls upon a number of different cognitive processes that are supported by the coordination of several large-scale cortical networks. Previous work from our group has demonstrated dissociable anatomic substrates at different stages of memory in patients with dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD). The aim of the current study was to extend the understanding of brain-behavior associations underlying a commonly administered neuropsychological assessment of verbal episodic memory (Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test; RAVLT) by determining the cortical network contributi

Risk profiles of elite breath-hold divers.

This study aimed to determine a typical profile of elite breath-hold divers (BHDs), in relation to loss of consciousness (LOC) and episodic memory. Forty-four BHDs were evaluated during a world championship with anthropometric and physiological measurements, psychosociological factors and memory assessment. Seventy-five percent of the BHDs had at least one LOC with the predominance being men (p < 0.05). Thirty six percent of BHDs presented a low-risk profile and 64% a high-risk profile with no particular psychological pattern. Stepwise multiple linear regression showed that body fat, years of

The memory deficit hypothesis of compulsive checking in OCD: what are we really talking about? A narrative review.

We reviewed studies that have specifically explored the memory deficit hypothesis of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) checking, highlighting the methodological differences between these studies that may explain inconsistencies regarding memory deficits in OCD checkers. Based on Conway's proposition that one function of episodic memories is to keep an adaptive record of recent goal processing in order to check that actions have actually been accomplished, we suggest that impaired autonoetic consciousness -one of the main features of episodic memory- may be at the heart of the issue of checki

Increasing representational capacity in the hippocampal-frontoparietal system underlies hierarchical development of temporal memory.

Time is a central dimension of episodic memory which allows us to remember not only what happened and where from past events, but also when those events occurred and how they relate to one another. Adults can form hierarchical knowledge derived from episodic experience that includes precise timing details about individual events and information about temporal patterns that encode regularities across experiences, alongside factual knowledge about time (e.g., the months of the year). Young children's temporal memory is more constrained, lacking both the level of local detail and limited global k

The cognitive and neural bases of creative thought: A cross-domain systematic review and meta-analysis of transcranial direct current stimulation studies.

Creative thought enables humans to flexibly generate, evaluate and select novel and adaptive ideas across different contexts. Decades of research indicates that it involves two key aspects: retrieval of previously acquired knowledge and manipulation of that knowledge. However, the cognitive processes underpinning these aspects remain underspecified. The broader clinical-cognitive neuroscience literature suggests these functions rely on general-purpose cognitive mechanisms supporting semantic cognition, controlled episodic memory retrieval, and executive mechanisms. Transcranial direct current

Assessing Human Spatial Navigation in a Virtual Space and its Sensitivity to Exercise.

Spatial navigation (SN) is the ability to locomote through the environment, which requires an understanding of where one is located in time and space. This capacity is known to rely on the sequential firing of place cells within the hippocampus. SN is an important behavior to investigate as this process deteriorates with age, especially in neurodegenerative disorders. However, the investigation of SN is limited by the lack of sophisticated behavioral techniques to assess this hippocampal-dependent task. Therefore, the goal of this protocol was to develop a novel, real-world approach to studyin

Evidence of hippocampal learning in human infants.

The hippocampus is essential for human memory.1 The protracted maturation of memory capacities from infancy through early childhood2-4 is thus often attributed to hippocampal immaturity.5-7 The hippocampus of human infants has been characterized in terms of anatomy,8,9 but its function has never been tested directly because of technical challenges.10,11 Here, we use recently developed methods for task-based fMRI in awake human infants12 to test the hypothesis that the infant hippocampus supports statistical learning.13-15 Hippocampal activity increased with exposure to visual sequences of obje

Cognitive performance in older adults at three months following mild traumatic brain injury.

Introduction: In the context of limited research assessing outcomes following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in older adults, this study evaluated cognitive outcomes through prospective memory, and expected that performance of an older mTBI group (≥65 years) would be lower compared to orthopedic and community controls. The study also explored whether cognitive resources (retrospective memory, executive function) moderated any association between presenting Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and prospective memory.Method: At three-months post-injury, a mTBI group (n = 39), an orthopedic control group

Processing of Different Temporal Scales in the Human Brain.

While recalling life events, we reexperience events of different durations, ranging across varying temporal scales, from several minutes to years. However, the brain mechanisms underlying temporal cognition are usually investigated only in small-scale periods-milliseconds to minutes. Are the same neurocognitive systems used to organize memory at different temporal scales? Here, we asked participants to compare temporal distances (time elapsed) to personal events at four different temporal scales (hour, day, week, and month) under fMRI. Cortical activity showed temporal scale sensitivity at the

Shedding light on the clinical recognition process of transient global amnesia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diagnostic uncertainty is common in the emergency evaluation of neurological conditions such as acute confusional states, particularly for non-neurologists. We aimed to investigate the clinical recognition process of transient global amnesia (TGA) before arrival at the hospital and in the emergency department (ED). METHODS: In this retrospective observational study, medical records of 365 patients with TGA were analysed concerning mode of arrival, symptoms and suspected diagnosis made by pre-hospital medical care providers and the ED neurologist. RESULTS: More than ha

Association between intrusive negative autobiographical memories and depression: A meta-analytic investigation.

The study investigated several associations between depression and intrusive negative autobiographical memories. A systematic literature search identified 23 eligible studies (N = 2,582), which provided 59 effect sizes. Separate meta-analyses indicated that depression was moderately, positively associated with intrusive memory frequency, memory distress, maladaptive memory appraisals, memory avoidance, and memory rumination. Intrusive memory vividness was not significantly associated with depression. There were insufficient data to examine the relationship between depression and memory vantage
