Effects of 434 MHz microwave hyperthermia applied to the rat in the region of the cervical spinal cord.

Hyperthermia was applied in the region of the vertebral column between the cervical vertebrae 5 and thoracic 2, using a ring-shaped applicator operating at a microwave frequency of 434 MHz. This region was focally heated, including spinal cord, vertebrae, intervertebral discs and nerve roots. In all experiments temperature was measured at a 'reference' thermocouple probe which was placed against one of the cervical vertebrae 6, 7 or thoracic 1. Temperatures inside the vertebral canal were measured separately and proved to be below the 'reference' temperature: at 42 degrees, 43 degrees, 44 degr

Teratogenic, biochemical, and histological studies with mice prenatally exposed to 2.45-GHz microwave radiation.

Pregnant CD-1 mice were exposed to 2.45-GHz continuous wave microwave radiation at an incident power density of 30 mW/cm2. The local specific absorption rate near the uterine area (deep colonic location), as determined from time-temperature profiles measured with a Vitek thermistor probe, was 40.2 mW/g. Groups of mice were exposed 8 hr per day through Days 1-6 or 6-15 of pregnancy. Other groups of animals were exposed to an elevated ambient temperature of 31 degrees C which increased the colonic temperature 2.3 degrees C, the same as that produced by the microwaves. Sham-irradiated groups of a…

A new method of SAR determination in animals exposed to microwave/radiofrequency radiation (MW/RFR).

Meaningful evaluation of physiological changes resulting from microwave/radiofrequency radiation (MW/RFR) exposure depends upon accurate dose level determination. Comparison of experimental results from different investigators also requires firm establishment of dose levels. Review of the current literature reveals considerable inconsistency in this area. Therefore, a reliable method of specific absorption rate (SAR) determination in living animals must be established. In this article, we propose a new procedure for SAR determination which does not interfere with other complementary measuremen

[Dynamics of morphological changes in the spinal cord following exposure to non-ionizing microwave radiation].

The structure of different portions (cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral and coccygeal) of the spinal cord were studied in the experiments on 50 animals with the use of the Nissl, Zimmermann, Cajal and other methods on days 1, 10, 20 and 30 after exposure to non-ionizing microwave radiation (NMI). Single exposure to NMI (wave length 12.6 cm, intensity 400-500 mW/cm2) for one hour (cats) or four hours (dogs) produces a severe distress of glial neurones and cells, which is marked by the appearance of dystrophic processes along the entire spinal cord. The disease progresses, leading to abnormaliti

Rapid microwave-assisted synthesis of ZnMn dual-atom nanozymes for cancer catalytic immunotherapy.

Catalytic nanomedicines face a persistent trade-off between structurally defined active sites and rapid synthesis. A microwave-assisted salt-flux conversion is developed that transforms a bimetallic metal-organic framework precursor within 3 min into nitrogen-doped carbon-supported ZnMn dual-atom nanozymes (ZnMn DAzymes). Aberration-corrected HAADF-STEM and dual-edge X-ray absorption fine structure analyses support adjacent Zn-Mn sites with an N-dominated ZnMn-N6-like coordination motif. Steady-state kinetics and density functional theory calculations suggest cooperative catalysis: Zn modulate

Recoverability-guided reduced-target inversion for microwave imaging: a synthetic breast-imaging study.

Microwave breast-imaging inversions are often formulated in latent or constitutive parameter spaces that include variables that may not be independently recoverable for a given measurement configuration. This paper presents a recoverability-guided reduced-target inversion framework in which the inverse target is constructed from measurement-supported directions of a noise-weighted local Jacobian. Candidate latent variables are classified as observable, weakly inferable, or strongly confounded. Separable variables are retained, whereas strongly confounded variables are represented by dominant c

The local efficacy of microwave ablation versus surgical resection for subcapsular colorectal liver metastases.

INTRODUCTION: The effectiveness of microwave ablation (MWA) versus surgical resection (SR) for subcapsular colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) is debated, with limited clinical evidence. This study examines the local therapeutic efficacy and complications of MWA and SR for treating subcapsular CRLM. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January 2013 and December 2020, 519 patients with subcapsular CRLM were retrospectively included. This research was conducted on 768 subcapsular CRLM (621 in the MWA group and 147 in the SR group). Propensity score matching (PSM) with a ratio of 1:2 and adjusted Cox p

Microwave-assisted synthesis, crystal structures, and photophysical properties of functionalized benzo[b]furans.

A Cs2CO3-mediated Rap-Stoermer strategy was developed for the synthesis of functionalized benzo[b]furan derivatives. O-Alkylation of o-hydroxyaryl carbonyl compounds 1 with ethyl α-bromoacetate 2 in acetone at room temperature selectively afforded ethyl 2-(2-carbonylaryloxy)acetates 3 in 70-95% yields, providing experimental evidence for the intermediates involved in the Rap-Stoermer cyclization pathway. Subsequent microwave irradiation in dimethylsulfoxide at 150 °C enabled rapid intramolecular cyclization to furnish ethyl benzo[b]furan-2-carboxylates 4 in 72-94% yields, while alkaline hydrol

Microwave ablation planning in fatty liver based on fat content-dependent electrical properties.

Hepatic steatosis alters tissue electrical properties (EPs), which can substantially influence microwave ablation (MWA) outcomes but are rarely considered in current MWA models. This study proposes a Dixon-based method to reconstruct hepatic EPs under varying fat contents (FCs) and applies the reconstructed EPs to quantitatively investigate the influence of hepatic steatosis on MWA performance. EPs were derived from Dixon-based FC maps and incorporated into a 3D liver model. Simulations were performed for two subjects using homogeneous liver models with FCs of 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%, as well as

Acid-free microwave extraction of citrus pectins: Linking molecular structure to functional properties.

Exploring greener and more controlled processes remains a key challenge in food ingredient development. In this study, pectins from orange, lemon, and lime peels were extracted by acid-free hydrothermal microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and characterized for their structural and functional properties. Competitive yields were achieved without external acid addition, reaching up to 26.38% at 160 °C for 5 min. Extraction conditions and citrus source significantly affected the degree of esterification, monosaccharide composition, and molar mass distribution. Orange pectins were classified as hig

Targeting Macrophage-Mediated Lymphatic Immunosuppression to Prevent Tumor Recurrence After Microwave Ablation.

Microwave ablation (MWA) is an effective locoregional therapy for solid tumors, but recurrence caused by minimal residual disease remains a clinical challenge. Although immunotherapy offers a strategy to prevent recurrence, the role of tumor-draining lymph nodes (TDLNs) in post-ablation immune regulation remains underexplored. Here, single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) reveals pronounced macrophage remodeling in TDLNs following incomplete MWA (iMWA), characterized by an increased representation of immunosuppressive Folr2+ and Apoe+ macrophage subsets. These populations exhibit broad colony-s

Enhancing heating uniformity in microwave pasteurization through eccentric rotation and bubbling: method and applications.

Microwave technology, with its advantage of rapid heating, offers a promising alternative to traditional heat pasteurization methods. However, its industrial application is constrained by inherent heating non-uniformity, especially evident in high-viscosity foods. Therefore, improving heating uniformity is crucial for enhancing the efficacy and efficiency of microwave pasteurization. In this study, Escherichia coli was used as the indicator microorganism to quantitatively assess the unevenness of heating in a small-scale single-mode microwave system. To enhance the uniformity of the thermal fi

Determination of cadmium, lead and mercury in cannabis flowers by microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometry.

BACKGROUND: The rapid expansion of legal medicinal and recreational cannabis markets has increased the need for quality control strategies and regulatory monitoring of contaminants in cannabis products. Toxic elements are of particular concern because cannabis plants can accumulate trace metals from environmental and cultivation sources. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometry (MP AES) as a cost-effective alternative to conventional argon plasma-based techniques for the determination of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg) in cannabis flowers. METHODS: Sampl

Microwave Modulation of β-Amylase Kinetics and Structure to Suppress Starch Retrogradation in Mashed Potatoes.

Starch retrogradation critically limits the quality and shelf life of potato starch-based foods. This study investigated the mechanism of microwave (MW) irradiation on β-amylase and further verified the synergistic anti-retrogradation effect of MW-modified β-amylase on mashed potato starch, revealing that enzymatic activity initially increased with short-term exposure but sharply declined under prolonged MW treatment. Compared to conventional water bath (WB) heating, MW irradiation induced conformational changes in β-amylase, reducing its α-helix content from 29.41% to 19.50% and driving conve

Reshaping interfacial heat supply in the Boudouard reaction through variable-frequency microwave fields.

Syngas is a key platform for fuels and chemicals, yet efficient CO2-to-CO conversion in endothermic Boudouard reactions (C + CO2 → 2 CO) is limited by nonuniform and delayed interfacial heat supply under conventional heating. To overcome this limitation, a variable-frequency microwave (VFM) strategy is proposed to enable precise interfacial energy delivery and mitigate transient heat deficits. Experiments combined with multiphysics simulations demonstrate that microwave frequency governs electric-field localization and the depth of energy deposition, thereby regulating the dynamics of interfac

Scavenger-controlled activation of lignin in microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvents for antioxidant nanoparticles.

Lignin holds promise as a renewable feedstock for functional materials, but its conversion into well-defined nanomaterials is constrained by the heterogeneity of conventional activation. While phenolic scavengers have been employed to suppress undesired recondensation, their role has traditionally been regarded as static. Herein, we report a scavenger- controlled strategy for converting alkali lignin (AL) into antioxidant lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) via microwave‑assisted deep eutectic solvent (DES) treatment combined with in‑situ scavenger addition. The function of ferulic acid (FA) is critic
