INTRODUCTION: Prenatal exposure to some pesticides can adversely affect male reproductive health in animals. We investigated a possible human association between maternal exposure to 27 organochlorine compounds used as pesticides and cryptorchidism among male children.
DESIGN: Within a prospective birth cohort, we performed a case-control study; 62 milk samples from mothers of cryptorchid boys and 68 from mothers of healthy boys were selected. Milk was collected as individual pools between 1 and 3 months postpartum and analyzed for 27 organochlorine pesticides.

Lactic acidosis is frequently encountered in the intensive care unit. It occurs when there is an imbalance between production and clearance of lactate. A term female infant developed late onset group B streptococcal disease on Day 12 of life. The source of the organism appeared to be expressed maternal breast milk in the absence of clinical mastitis. Twenty-five lactose-maldigesting and lactose-intolerant African Americans, ranging in age from 13 to 39 y, were given gradually increasing amounts of lactose in milk over a period of time until the maximum lactose dose tolerated was determined. The concentration of epidermal growth factor in human and bovine milk was measured by radioreceptor assay. Both human placental plasma membranes and a human epidermoid carcinoma cell were used as the epidermal growth factor receptor source in the assay. The use of placental plasma membrane in the radioreceptor assay gave erroneous results for bovine milk and overestimated the concentration of epidermal growth factor in human milk. Substitute feedings have been used to treat infants with cow milk protein allergy for most of this century. For the past 50 years, several infant formulas based on animal proteins, both intact and chemically modified, or on vegetable protein have been labeled "hypoallergenic."
