Some observations on sheep sarcoptic mange in Tehran province, Iran.

Sarcoptes scabiei infestation was diagnosed in 278 sheep from 12 fatling flocks. The sheep presented crusted skin lesions initially appear on the lips or nostrils, the lesion on nostrils also extend towards around the eyes, the supraorbital fossae and in some cases over entire face. The infested male lambs by mating behavior in fatling flocks caused transmitting the infection to fat tail area and scrotum. Histopathological study of lesions demonstrated marked acanthosis, hyperkeratosis, parakeratosis. Tunnels could be observed in the hyperkeratotic stratum corneum and mite segments were locate

Varroa destructor (Mesostigmata: Varroidae) Parasitism and Climate Differentially Influence the Prevalence, Levels, and Overt Infections of Deformed Wing Virus in Honey Bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae).

The prevalence and loads of deformed wing virus (DWV) between honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies from a tropical and a temperate environment were compared. The interaction between these environments and the mite Varroa destructor in relation to DWV prevalence, levels, and overt infections, was also analyzed. V. destructor rates were determined, and samples of mites, adult bees, brood parasitized with varroa mites and brood not infested by mites were analyzed. DWV was detected in 100% of the mites and its prevalence and loads in honey bees were significantly higher in colonies from the temp

Validation of PCR Assay for Identification of Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis.

BACKGROUND: Infestation of the skin by the "itch mite" Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis results in a contagious skin infection in humans called "scabies". By resolving morphology issues, the present study was designed to be acquainted with itch mite by molecular markers. METHODS: The mite samples were collected from scabies patients by visiting government hospitals of twin City, Pakistan. For successful molecular detection approach, preparation of Sarcoptes mite DNA by commercial DNA extraction kit method. Furthermore, two primers i.e. Sarms 15 F/R and 16S D1/D2 were used to amplify target sequ

Pediatric scabies.

Scabies is an intensely pruritic dermatosis that is caused by a mite, Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis. Scabies is highly contagious and may have the pathognomonic sign of burrows in addition to erythematous papules. These lesions are often excoriated. In addition to classic scabies, special forms with distinctive clinical features exist. A variety of topical medications are available to treat the infestation.

When the hive speaks: detecting Varroa destructor infestation in honey bees through acoustic biomarkers and machine learning.

Honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies are essential for agricultural production and ecosystem services but are increasingly threatened by multiple stressors, particularly the parasitic mite Varroa destructor, one of the major causes of global colony losses. Early and reliable detection of infestations is therefore critical for effective colony management. In this study, we investigated continuous hive acoustics as a non-invasive approach for the early detection of Varroa infestations. Approximately 960,000 timestamped acoustic recordings were collected from 53 colonies, of which only recordings

Eyelash loss in frontal fibrosing alopecia: Microscopic features of two cases.

BACKGROUND: To report two cases of eyelash loss in Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia, providing microscopic description of the eyelashes and possible association with Demodex folliculorum. CASE PRESENTATION: We present two cases of postmenopausal women diagnosed with frontal fibrosing alopecia who consulted the ophthalmology department for eyelid itching and eyelash loss. On examination, there were no signs of blepharitis, but loss of lashes was observed, and the remaining eyelashes detached easily from the eyelid. The eyelashes were examined microscopically. The bulbs were small and narrow, and the

Presence and diversity of Chlamydiae bacteria in Spinturnix myoti, an ectoparasite of bats.

Chlamydia spp. and Chlamydia-like organisms are able to infect vertebrates such as mammals, reptiles and birds, but also arthropods and protozoans. Since they have been detected in bats and bat feces, we expected Chlamydiae bacteria to also be present in the mite Spinturnix myoti, an ectoparasite of mouse-eared bats (Myotis spp.). The prevalence of Chlamydiales in 88 S. myoti was 57.95% and significantly depended on bat host species. In addition, the prevalence was significantly different between bat species living in sympatry or in allopatry. While there was uninterpretable sequencing for 16

Colonization of vineyards by phytoseiid mites: their dispersal patterns in the plot and their fate.

The effect of wind and woody margins on the dispersal and population dynamics of phytoseiid mites was studied in a vine plot for a period of two years. Mites were sampled in the plot and in the surrounding vegetation (crops and natural vegetation) in order to determine phytoseiid mite abundance. The surrounding vegetation was considered to be a reservoir of phytoseiids from where the vine plot could be invaded. Directional and non-directional soil and aerial traps were placed in the plot to determine predatory mite exchange between the two areas. Colonization of the plot occurred in two stages

Generalised demodicosis in a Friesian heifer from a zero-grazing unit.

A Friesian heifer with generalised skin lesions was slaughtered after unsuccessful treatment. It had thickened skin with lumps and nodules, with the severely affected parts thrown into folds over the eyelids, ears, most of the head, neck, legs and perineal area. The affected skin was soft and squamous in appearance. On postmortem examination, all the skin layers were affected and were 10-22 mm thick. There was also lymphadenopathy. Histological examination showed the presence of dermatitis characterised by follicular inflammation. Multiple follicular cysts with keratin squames and numerous dem

Microclimate and host body condition influence mite population growth in a wild bird-ectoparasite system.

Parasite populations are never evenly distributed among the hosts they infect. Avian nest ectoparasites, such as mites, are no exception, as their distribution across the landscape is highly aggregated. It remains unclear if this pattern is driven by differences in transmission events alone, or if the environment that parasites inhabit after transmission also plays a role. Here, we experimentally examined the influence of the post-transmission microclimate, nest characteristics, and host condition on ectoparasite population growth in a bird-ectoparasite system. We infested barn swallow (Hirund

Ectoparasites of goats in the UK.

The goat industry in the UK has expanded rapidly in recent years, but at present there is only a poor understanding of the prevalence of parasitic diseases in this farming system. Here, a questionnaire survey of 110 goat owners was used to address this issue. Problems with louse infestation in the previous 12 months were reported by 23% of owners and 19% reported mange. Chorioptic mange was the most common form, with 14 of 21 cases. Sarcoptic mage accounted for only 3 cases and demodex and psoroptic mange each made up 2 cases. Only 53 farmers (48%) said that they took preventative measures to

Comparative analysis of host resistance to Sarcoptes scabiei var. cuniculi in two different rabbit breeds.

BACKGROUND: Scabies, caused by infestation of the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, is one of the most severe ectoparasitic diseases in rabbits. Scabies seriously affects the commercial rabbit breeding, causing severe economic losses. Host resistance to S. scabiei is an important factor in further development of the rabbit industry. In the present study, we compared the host resistance to S. scabiei var. cuniculi of a new breed of domestic rabbit propagated by the Sichuan Animal Sciences Academy (QiXing rabbit, QX) compared with that of a traditional rabbit breed in the domestic rabbit industry (IRA rab

Monitoring Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Acari: Acaridae) With Traps in Dry-Cured Ham Aging Rooms.

Methyl bromide is the most effective fumigant for controlling the mold (or ham) mite, Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) (Acari: Acaridae), the most significant pest of dry-cured ham. However, methyl bromide is being phased out of use. Therefore, integrated pest management (IPM) methods should be developed to help control mites in dry-cured ham plants. The foundation of a successful IPM program is an effective monitoring program that provides information on pest presence and abundance over time. By using food-baited traps fabricated from disposable petri dishes and a dog food-based bait, mite

Genetic variation in jasmonic acid- and spider mite-induced plant volatile emission of cucumber accessions and attraction of the predator Phytoseiulus persimilis.

Cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L.) respond to spider-mite (Tetranychus urticae) damage with the release of specific volatiles that are exploited by predatory mites, the natural enemies of the spider mites, to locate their prey. The production of volatiles also can be induced by exposing plants to the plant hormone jasmonic acid. We analyzed volatile emissions from 15 cucumber accessions upon herbivory by spider mites and upon exposure to jasmonic acid using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Upon induction, cucumber plants emitted over 24 different compounds, and the blend of induced vola

New hosts for the mite Ornithonyssus bursa in Argentina.

The mite Ornithonyssus bursa (Berlese) (Mesostigmata: Macronyssidae) is considered a poultry pest causing important infestations in chickens and it is considered a potential vector of arbovirus. Despite being considered a common parasite in wild birds, there is scarce published information about its potential hosts and effects on them. Here we present new bird hosts for O. bursa, assess the presence of Alphavirus, Flavivirus and Bunyavirus in mites from three host species, and discuss its potential impact on wild bird populations. We found O. bursa infecting five raptor and six passerine wild
