A family systems nursing approach to hypertension.

This article focuses on a family systems nursing approach for essential hypertension. A case example is presented that describes the approach with a hypertensive woman with agoraphobia symptoms. A clinically significant decrease in the client's blood pressure occurred following the family sessions. Clinical observations of improved family relationships and symptom reduction corroborate research findings on the variables of perceived stress, anxiety levels and family coping resources. Interventions such as split-opinions, reframing, and rituals are described.

The CLER model: thinking through change. Configurations of social relationships. Linkages to carry communications. Environment(s) inside and around systems. Resources for enabling implementation for incorporating change.

The CLER model is presented to nursing professionals as a model for planning and implementing change in interpersonal, institutional and cultural settings. It is useful for generating other models by modeling reality as actually encountered by change agents and adopters. The CLER model is related philosophically to systems thinking (that there is interdependence among social entities), dialectical thinking (that there is mutual shaping among social processes) and constructivist thinking (that human beings take part in creating their own reality).

Research progress on continuous nursing care for children after radical surgery for Hirschsprung's disease.

Hirschsprung's disease is a common congenital gastrointestinal malformation in children, for which radical surgery remains the primary treatment modality. Postoperatively, patients are prone to complications such as Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis, defecation dysfunction, anal stenosis, and psychological or behavioral abnormalities, all of which significantly impair growth, development, and quality of life. As a critical bridge linking inpatient treatment with home-based rehabilitation, continuous nursing care has demonstrated efficacy in enhancing post-discharge outcomes, reducing compl

Results of a study on nursing students' success in taking advanced level (Graduate) pathophysiology in their basic nursing program.

Schools of nursing are encouraged to provide a course of study offering unique educational models that support the learning needs of adult students who attained a non-nursing Bachelor's Degree prior to enrolling in nursing school, Also known as nontraditional students, graduates of these programs often go on to seek graduate degrees in nursing (McKenna and Brooks, 2018). Non-traditional students may be older and desire to complete graduate education in a timely manner. The study focus was to determine if pre-licensure BSN students can successfully complete graduate course work during their pre

Phases of the qualitative research interview with institutionalized elderly individuals.

The in-depth, open-ended formal interview is a mainstay of qualitative nursing research. However, difficulties with this method of data collection are common with institutionalized elderly individuals. During a qualitative study of urinary incontinence among nursing home residents, six distinct phases of the formal interview were identified: introducing, personalizing, reminiscing, contextualizing, closing, and reciprocating. These phases were discovered in the course of analyzing field notes and verbatim transcripts from open-ended formal interviews with 10 respondents. Allowing qualitative r

Workplace bullying in nursing: towards a more critical organisational perspective.

Workplace bullying is a significant issue confronting the nursing profession. Bullying in nursing is frequently described in terms of 'oppressed group' behaviour or 'horizontal violence'. It is proposed that the use of 'oppressed group' behaviour theory has fostered only a partial understanding of the phenomenon in nursing. It is suggested that the continued use of 'oppressed group' behaviour as the major means for understanding bullying in nursing places a flawed emphasis on bullying as a phenomenon that exists only among nurses, rather than considering it within the broader organisational co

Reducing Antibiotic Drug Use Effects on Clostridioides difficile Colonization in Nursing Home Residents1.

Antibiotic drug-mediated changes in the human gut microbiota affect Clostridioides difficile colonization. We created a compartmental model of C. difficile colonization in nursing home residents to improve understanding of how the gut microbiota mediates the transmission process. When analyzing C. difficile colonization as a function of the daily percentage of the nursing home resident population on antibiotic drugs, the model displayed increases in C. difficile colonization as antibiotic drug use increased. Reducing the daily percentage of the nursing home resident population receiving antibi
