Instability of ocular torsion in zero gravity: possible implications for space motion sickness.

Inherent asymmetries of the gravity-sensitive otolith organs of the inner ear may be well-compensated in ordinary 1 G, but rendered unstable in novel gravitational states. Several aspects of ocular counterrolling and spontaneous eye torsion, reflexes governed by the otoliths, were examined during the hypo- and hypergravity in parabolic flight on the NASA KC-135 aircraft. Among the subjects were two astronauts, one who had suffered space motion sickness during his mission and one who had not. Using an observed separation of scores of torsional instability at 0 G as the criterion, we divided our…

Experimental motion sickness induced in squirrel monkeys by continuous off-axis horizontal rotation.

Under a variety of experimental conditions, nonrestrained adult male squirrel monkeys were subjected to continuous rotation in the horizonta … tation sessions, only a few monkeys showed evidence of developing transient habituation of onset of motion sickness. Mean frequency of emetic episodes, however, declined over the latter half of the rotation series. Restricting visual cues by blindfolding the monkeys prevented most subjects from vomiting.

Motion sickness susceptibility during rotation at 30 rpm in free-fall parabolic flight.

Free fall per se whether in parabolic or orbital flight may be regarded as a "partial" motion environment with respect to eliciting motion sickness, requiring an additional component to render this environment "complete" or stressful. Parabolic flight in toto falls in the category of a "complete" motion environment in that some persons became motion sick with head fixed and eyes closed. In the present experiment we selected subjects who were symptom free or nearly symptom free in the KC-135 with head fixed. All tests were conducted with the subject rotating at 30 rpm in a rotating litter chair…

Exploring the Participant-Related Determinants of Simulator Sickness in a Physical Motion Car Rollover Simulation as Measured by the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire.

Physical motion driving simulators serve as a valuable research and training tool. Since many simulator participants suffer from simulator sickness (SS), we aimed to gain a better understanding of participant-related variables that may influence its incidence and severity. The study involved a 2-min mobile-platform car rollover simulation conducted in a group of 100 healthy adult participants. SS was measured with the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire immediately before and after the simulation. We investigated how the symptomatology of SS varies with gender, as well as with participants' previ

Storage of passive motion pattern in hippocampal CA1 region depends on CaMKII/CREB signaling pathway in a motion sickness rodent model.

Sensory mismatch between actual motion information and anticipated sensory patterns (internal model) is the etiology of motion sickness (MS). Some evidence supports that hippocampus might involve the neural storage of the "internal model". This study established an "internal model" acquisition-retention behavioral model using a repeated habituation rotation training protocol. We tried to identify the hippocampal subregion involved in "internal model" retention using chemical lesion methods. Hippocampal kinases (CaMK, CaMKIV, CREB and ERK1/2) phosphorylation in the target subregion was assayed …

Investigating How Brain Stimulation Mitigates Motion Sickness Using Spatiotemporal Nystagmus Parameters Captured in VR.

Mitigating motion sickness with non-invasive cortical vestibular brain stimulation (vBS) is promising because it does not require redesigning VR content or altering the motion profile of a moving platform. Instead, it aims to enhance individuals' intrinsic resistance to motion sickness. However, the mechanism underlying its online efficacy remains unclear (Here, "online efficacy" means the observed motion sickness reduction during vBS not before or after vBS). Motivated by lower motion sickness susceptibility observed in congenital nystagmus patients, we hypothesized that reductions in motion …

The Fast Motion Sickness Scale Revisited: Introducing Comparable Scales for Dizziness and Oculomotor Strain.

ObjectiveWe introduce two novel scales to measure two important aspects of motion sickness, dizziness and eye strain.BackgroundThe Fast Motion Sickness Scale (FMS) has become a valuable tool to assess motion sickness whenever quick unobtrusive measures need to be taken. It is well-anchored and provides scalable, quantitative data. However, it does not differentiate among symptoms of motion sickness.MethodWe discuss the benefits and shortcomings of the FMS as well as other, symptom-based rating scales. We present a taxonomy to assess symptom clusters and illustrate the trade-off between fast gl…

Study on the regulatory effect of magnetic vestibular stimulation on visually induced motion sickness.

Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is a common adverse effect of virtual reality (VR). Magnetic vestibular stimulation (MVS) may modulate vestibular function, but its effect on VIMS remains unclear. This study examined whether different MVS intensities were associated with changes in VIMS symptoms and resting-state EEG network characteristics in healthy participants exposed to VR. Twenty healthy young adults completed five repeated-measures sessions: normal/non-VR, VR-only, and VR combined with MVS at 90%, 100%, and 110% of individual resting motor threshold (rMT). VIMS symptoms were asse…

Can We Estimate Motion Sickness Severity in Car Passengers Based on Individual Head Dynamics?

ObjectiveThis study investigates the relationship between motion sickness and body movements experienced by car passengers during non-driving related activities.BackgroundThe theory linking motion sickness to postural instability is well-documented in static environments. However, evidence supporting this theory in dynamic environments, such as moving vehicles, is still lacking.MethodUsing an experimental approach replicating a naturalistic 15-min car ride, 56 participants were equipped with an in-ear sensor to measure the linear accelerations of the head. Participants reported their motion si…

Hybrid Supervised and Reinforcement Learning for Motion-Sickness-Aware Path Tracking in Autonomous Vehicles.

Path tracking is an essential task for autonomous driving (AD), for which controllers are designed to issue commands so that vehicles will follow the path of upper-level decision planning properly to ensure operational safety, comfort, and efficiency. Current path-tracking methods still face challenges in balancing tracking accuracy with computational overhead, and more critically, lack consideration for Motion Sickness (MS) mitigation. However, as AD applications divert occupants' attention to non-driving activities at varying degrees, MS in self-driving vehicles has been significantly exacer…

Symmetric projection attractor reconstruction: Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation for visually induced motion sickness.

Motion sickness is an enigma that has plagued humans for millennia - and could be exacerbated by automated vehicles and virtual reality. Here, we examined the neuromodulatory effects of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) - a non-invasive brain stimulation tool - on autonomic function in response to motion sickness-induced nausea. We conducted a crossover randomized controlled study of healthy participants (n = 29) administered with active taVNS and sham, concurrent with visually-induced motion sickness during electrocardiogram (ECG) acquisition. Using symmetric projection…

Deep insights into the mechanism of isorhamnetin's anti-motion sickness effect based on photoshoproteomics.

Isorhamnetin has recently been found to exhibit a remarkable anti-motion sickness effect, yet the underlying mechanism is still unclear. Herein, network pharmacology was employed to conduct a preliminary analysis on the possible biological processes involved. Results showed that common targets were localized in membranes, mitochondria, and glutamatergic synapses. In particular, protein phosphorylation, protein serine/threonine/tyrosinase activity and signal transduction might play a role in isorhamnetin's anti-motion sickness effect. Thus, mice phosphoproteomics analysis was further performed …

Nutritional and Behavioral Countermeasures as Medication Approaches to Relieve Motion Sickness: A Comprehensive Review.

The mismatch in signals perceived by the vestibular and visual systems to the brain, also referred to as motion sickness syndrome, has been diagnosed as a challenging condition with no clear mechanism. Motion sickness causes undesirable symptoms during travel and in virtual environments that affect people negatively. Treatments are directed toward reducing conflicting sensory inputs, accelerating the process of adaptation, and controlling nausea and vomiting. The long-term use of current medications is often hindered by their various side effects. Hence, this review aims to identify non-pharma…

Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation towards Visually Induced Motion Sickness Reduction: A Pilot Study.

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a novel neuromodulation application for vagal afferent stimulation. Owing to its non-invasive nature, taVNS is a potent therapeutic tool for a diverse array of diseases and disorders that ail us. Herein, we investigated taVNS-induced effects on neural activity of participants during visually induced motion sickness. 64-channel electroencephalography (EEG) recordings were obtained from 15 healthy participants in a randomized, within-subjects, cross-over design during sham and taVNS conditions. To assess motion sickness severity, we use…

Estimating objective (EEG) and subjective (SSQ) cybersickness in people with susceptibility to motion sickness.

Cybersickness refers to the uncomfortable side effects, such as headaches, dizziness, and nausea, felt while experiencing virtual reality (VR). This study investigated cybersickness in people with sensitivity to motion sickness using electroencephalography (EEG), the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ), and simple VR content. Based on the scores from the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire (MSSQ), 40 males in their twenties were selected as the sensitive group (n = 20) and non-sensitive group (n = 20). The experiment contained two conditions: a baseline condition representing a res…

The Shepard-Risset Glissando: Identifying the Origins of Metaphorical Auditory Vection and Motion Sickness.

We recently showed that auditory illusions of self-motion can be induced in the absence of physically accurate spatial cues (Mursic et al., 2017). The current study was aimed at identifying which features of this auditory stimulus (the Shepard-Risset glissando) were responsible for this metaphorical auditory vection, as well as confirming anecdotal reports of motion sickness for this stimulus. Five different types of auditory stimuli were presented to 31 blindfolded, stationary participants through a loudspeaker array: (1) a descending Shepard-Risset glissando; (2) a descending discrete Shepar…

Tradipitant in the Treatment of Motion Sickness: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study.

Introduction: Novel therapies are needed for the treatment of motion sickness given the inadequate relief and bothersome and dangerous adverse effects of currently approved therapies. Neurokinin-1 (NK1) receptor antagonists have the potential to be effective in improving the symptoms of motion sickness, given the involvement of Substance P in nauseogenic and emetic pathways and the expression of NK1 receptors in the gastrointestinal system. Here we evaluated the efficacy of tradipitant, a novel NK1 receptor antagonist, in preventing motion sickness in variable sea conditions. Methods: A total …
