A case of furuncular myiasis in an Italian patient: a "travel souvenir".

Furuncular myiasis is a parasitosis of the skin that is commonly reported in the tropical areas and is caused by various agents including Dermatobia hominis. Knowledge of myiasis is limited in Italy, resulting in difficulties in its diagnosis and treatment. We report a case of imported furuncular myiasis in a 48 year old Italian patient who returned from Peru. A third stage larva of D. hominis was identified and the diagnosis of myiasis was confirmed.

Management of Wound Myiasis in the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Setting.

Complex wounds are common complications in hospice and palliative medicine (HPM), especially in patients with aggressive malignancies. Myiasis, or an infestation of maggots, is a rare but significant complication of such wounds. While uncommon in the United States, many HPM patients have multiple risk factors and comorbidities that increase their vulnerability to this condition. Currently, there are no standard diagnostic or treatment guidelines for wound myiasis. In addition, common management strategies may not be easily accessible in HPM settings. We present this case of a patient with mali…

Otorhinolaryngological myiasis: the problem and its presentations in the weak and forgotten.

INTRODUCTION: Myiasis is common in tropical regions, but now increasing incidence is seen in the west due to international travel. Otorhinolaryngological myiasis is uncommon and is seen in diabetics, alcoholics or patients unable in self-care. OBJECTIVES: To study presentations of otorhinolaryngological myiasis, identify associated risk factors and species of flies causing myiasis. METHODS: Clinical findings and co-morbidities of 67 myiasis cases were noted. Maggots were identified, manually removed, and patients were managed with topical treatment, systemic ivermectin and antibiotics. FIND…

Furuncular myiasis for the Western dermatologist: treatment in outpatient consultation.

BACKGROUND: Furuncular myiasis is likely to be seen by Western dermatologists because of the increasing number of international travelers but remains unfamiliar to most of them, who tend to refer these patients to hospitals. Different treatments have been proposed, but many of them are not achievable in outpatient consultation. METHODS: We reported three typical cases of furuncular myiasis, according to each species involved, and proposed diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines for dermatologists in outpatient consultation. RESULTS: One patient, complaining of an inflammatory nodule of the leg…

Furuncular Myiasis Affecting the Lower Lip of a Young Patient.

Furuncular myiasis is a parasitic infection caused by the larvae of Dipteran insects after penetrating healthy skin, causing an erythematous nodule with a central pore. Additionally, the patient may feel a sensation of movement and intermittent pain. Furuncular myiasis affecting the oral and perioral region is rare, usually leading to misdiagnosis. This paper describes a rare case of furuncular myiasis in a 20-year-old healthy male patient who presented an erythematous nodule in the lower lip. An exploratory surgery was indicated for both diagnostic and curative purposes, with successful heali…

Furuncular Myiasis in a Child: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Myiasis is an ectoparasitic infestation of tissue. Most cases of furuncular myiasis in Saudi Arabia are acquired from the Southern region of Saudi Arabia, including the Al Baha and Asir regions. Some authors consider these areas to be part of the Afro-tropical zoogeographical belt where infection is most likely to occur. Some studies have reported posttrauma myiasis in oral cavities in children. However, myiasis is rarely reported in children who do not suffer from skin erosion or trauma. We are reporting the case of a young, otherwise healthy girl who visited Al Taif, in the Western region of…

[Nosocomial myiasis in Latin America and the Caribbean: an overlooked reality?].

Nosocomial myiasis is an infestation by fly larvae that occurs while a patient is hospitalized. To analyze the available information on nosocomial myiasis in Latin America and the Caribbean, a search was done for cases published in the last 52 years. Nine clinical cases were found for Brazil, Costa Rica, French Guiana, Honduras, and Jamaica. Two other publications mention 139 cases in El Salvador and some 32 in Colombia, respectively. The patients and environments described presented conditions that predispose to this type of infestation. Compulsory notification is not usually required for nos…

Oral myiasis in an adult associated with filariasis and Hansen's disease.

Oral myiasis is a common parasitic infestation of live human and animals caused by species of dipteran fly larvae known as maggots which may be secondary to medical disease. This case involves a 51-year-old female, poorly debilitated with advanced periodontal disease infected by the dipteral larvae in the anterior maxillary region which belonged to the family Calliphoridae and Chrysomya bezziana species. This lady was neglected from her family and presented oral myiasis with the previous history of filariasis and Hansen's disease. Secondary infestations may occur in cancrum oris, oral extracti…

Cutaneous myiasis in a malignant wound of the head and neck region.

Myiasis is a parasitic infestation of vital tissue of humans or other mammals by dipterous larvae. Human myiasis is a rare clinic condition but more frequently seen in tropical and subtropical areas, in patients who have poor hygiene, have bad housing conditions, are with mental retardation, or have advanced age. We report a case of myiasis in a malignant wound (squamous cell carcinoma) in the head and neck region because a few literature reports were seen in this localization. The patient's treatment was antisepsis, larval removal, and general care preventions, whereas standard treatment opti…

Umbilical Myiasis Associated with Staphylococcus Aureus Sepsis in a neonate.

Myiasis is an infection of live mammalian tissue by the larvae of dipteran flies and commonly found in the tropics and subtropics. It usually infects domestic and wild animals, but sometimes also affects human. Umbilical cord myiasis in the neonatal period associated with sepsis is a rare occurrence with few reported cases in the literature. In this article, authors report a 7-day-old neonate from a rural area presented with neonatal sepsis due to umbilical myiasis caused by fly larval form of blow fly (Chrysomya megacephala).

Massive scalp myiasis with bleeding in a patient with multiple malignancies.

Most cases of myiasis in association with cancer are reported in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck region. They are not emergencies. We report a case of massive myiasis of the scalp with bleeding in a patient with an ulcerated squamous cell carcinoma of the scalp, haematological and colorectal malignancies. Treatment of myiasis is based on local disinfection and mechanical removal of larvae. Other options of treatment are discussed.
