To investigate the association of family history of malignant tumors with clinicopathological characteristics of colorectal cancer, and its effects on prognosis. We conducted a retrospective review of pathological and follow-up data of patients with colorectal cancer treated in our hospital from January 2010 to December 2015. Of 870 patients undergoing surgery, 737 received follow-up (84.7%). Among them, 192 (26.1%) were family history of malignant neoplasm-positive [MN-FH (+)] and 545 (73.9%) were family history of malignant neoplasm-negative [MN-FH (-)]. MN-FH (+) patients had earlier diseas

RATIONALE: Primary angiosarcoma of the spleen (PAS) is a very rare malignant neoplasm that originates from endothelial cells of the splenic blood vessels. Without typical clinical presentations and specific radiological features, PAS is very difficult to be early identified and 1-year mortality is extremely high. Late detection and spleen rupture are considered as the most important risk factors for early metastasis.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Without any obvious symptom, a 35-year-old woman was admitted with splenic neoplasm that was accidentally discovered through a routine physical examination.

BACKGROUND: Primary neuroendocrine (NE) neoplasms of the breast are rare. In the absence of in situ carcinoma, metastasis from other organs needs to be ruled out first. TRPS1 is a recently identified marker for breast origin. In the current study, we investigated TRPS1 expression in breast neuroendocrine neoplasms, including well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumour (NET) and poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC), and compared its expression with neuroendocrine neoplasms from other organs, such as lung, gastrointestinal tract and pancreas.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 105 ca

BACKGROUND: Sweat gland carcinomas with clear cell features are extremely rare neoplasms, with few well documented cases reported in the literature.
METHODS: Data on nine patients with malignant eccrine adnexal neoplasms characterized by a prominent clear cell neoplastic component were studied. Immunohistochemical stains with a panel of antibodies against epithelial, stromal, and neural antigens were performed on five tumors and electron microscopic examination of one.
RESULTS: The tumors showed a spectrum of histologic features and growth patterns that ranged from well differentiated, low g

Aggressive angiomyxoma (AAM) is a rare, locally aggressive, myxoid mesenchymal neoplasm primarily found in the pelvic and perineal regions of young adult females. It is a slow growing and locally infiltrating tumor. Preoperative diagnosis is difficult due to the rarity of these tumors and absence of characteristic signs and symptoms. The primary management is tumor excision. Incomplete excision is common because of the infiltrating nature of the neoplasm and absence of a definite capsule. Other non- surgical modalities have been employed, such as radiotherapy, embolization, GnRH analogues or o

Papillary cystadenoma (PC) of the salivary gland is an uncommon benign epithelial neoplasm that shows predominantly multicystic growth pattern with intraluminal papillary proliferation and areas of oncocytic differentiation. We report a case of papillary cystadenoma of the parotid gland in a 44-years-old female. The patient presented with painful nodular swelling in the right parotid region for two months. Ultrasonography revealed a well marginated oval lesion with altered signal intensity involving the superficial lobe. The excision specimen showed a neoplasm with multicystic spaces having pa

Composite hemangioendothelioma (CHE) is an extremely rare vascular neoplasm that is characterized by an admixture of benign, low-grade malignant, and malignant vascular components. It is usually located superficially in the dermis and subcutis of the extremities, and other sites involved include the head and neck region, oral mucosa, and viscera of the kidney and spleen. CHE has a low-grade malignant potential because it is locally aggressive. Here, we report a case of CHE in the heart in a 46-year-old man, who presented with a palpable mass arising from his right ventricle. Echocardiogram ima

Primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphomas are rare in humans and even more uncommon in animals. We report the clinical, pathological and immunohistochemical features of a presumptive primary cerebral T-cell lymphoma (PCTCL) in an aged female white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) that had chronic progressive neurological disease characterized by ataxia, claudication and eventual circling. The animal was euthanized due to poor prognosis. Grossly, a 2.5 cm dark red, friable nodule effaced the cortical neuroparenchyma of the left anterior cingulate cortex (LACC). Microscopically, the men

We present an interesting scenario where a 64 years old male presented with a long standing painless, infra-auricular swelling, which had progressively increased in size. Based on the site, the clinical impression was of a salivary gland lesion and FNAC was performed. The smears were unusually cellular and had necrotic background. The cytological diagnosis was a cystic neoplasm of salivary gland, possibly mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Warthin's tumor was also kept in differential. However, the radiological investigations, which were made available after the FNAC report were conflicting with cytolo

Primary pulmonary chondrosarcoma is a rare neoplasm that usually grows slowly, metastasizes late, and responds well to excision when localized. Herein, we present a 59-year-old man who manifested with hemoptysis, cough and dyspnea with a hemithorax mass. A chest computed tomography scan demonstrated a fast-growing mass in the right upper lobe, and the enhancement was partially heterogeneous. Bronchoscopy revealed a hemorrhagic neoplasm in the right upper bronchus. A bronchoscopy biopsy specimen revealed a variety of tissues, including mucoid cartilage, fibers, respiratory epithelium and squamo

We report a case of exceedingly rare cutaneous neoplasm with histological features of malignancy and uncertain biological potential. The nodular, darkly pigmented facial tumor with central exulceration, size 12 x 10 x 7 mm, of the skin 61-year-old man preauricular left was completely exised. Histologically tumor consists of atypical squamous cells, which express signs of moderate to significant pleomorphism, mitotically active, with foci forming of parakeratotic horn cysts ("pearls"). Characteristically tumor also consists of large number of atypical melanocytes with multifocal pattern, insert

We report a carcinosarcoma of the pancreas in a 67-year-old woman who presented with nausea, vomiting, and painless jaundice. A work-up demonstrated a well-circumscribed mass in the head of the pancreas. After pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy, the tumor was found to be grossly yellow, and it compressed the common bile duct and pancreatic duct. Histological examination of the neoplasm showed a 4.0 x 4.0 x 3.0-cm mucinous cystadenocarcinoma with invasive poorly differentiated carcinoma, well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, and sarcomatous stroma invading into the duodenum. Endoscopic full-thickness resection (EFTR) has emerged as a minimally invasive treatment for small gastrointestinal subepithelial neoplasms (SETs). In particular, the development of novel closure methods such as clip-line and various endoscopic suturing techniques has enabled the secure closure of any resultant defects. During the Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy session at the Endoscopic Forum Japan 2025, we summarized the current status of EFTR for SETs and discussed future clinical applications for epithelial neoplasms from oncological and technical perspectives. BACKGROUND: Intraductal tubular papillary neoplasm (ITPN) displays a very rare subtype of epithelial neoplasms of the pancreas. ITPN is characterized by intraductal tubulopapillary growth and cellular dysplasia. In contrast to intraductal papillary neoplasm (IPMN) no overt epithelial mucin production is observed. To date, little is known about ITPN and particularly about pancreatic cancer arising in this tumor entity.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old male presented at our hospital with a distal bile duct occlusion suspicious for adenocarcinoma of the pancreatic head. Preoperative staging reve

During the illustrious career of Martin C. Mihm Jr., MD, the diagnosis of melanoma underwent significant changes, to which he made many contributions. In early descriptions, melanomas were fungating tumor masses that were obviously malignant, and highly lethal. In seminal work by Dr. Mihm and his mentor, Wallace H. Clark, Jr., MD, the early phases of development of these neoplasms were recognized and distinguished from the more advanced disease. It was generally believed that the early stage of melanoma, termed radial growth phase (RGP) and characterized by absence of vertical growth phase (VG

Primary central nervous system (CNS) neoplasia is relatively rare in most domestic animal species, except dogs and cats, being directly associated with aging. On the other hand, hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, mammary carcinoma and melanoma are the most common secondary tumors affecting CNS. They usually represent metastasis, and less frequently arising from nearby areas that infiltrate or compress CNS normal tissue, resulting in neurological clinical signs. This case report documents a 10-year-old female spayed Pinscher presenting with severe thoracolumbar pain and paraplegia due to a primary vert

Alveolar soft part sarcoma is a rare neoplasm of uncertain histogenesis that belongs to a newly defined category of ultra-rare sarcomas. The neoplasm is characterized by a specific chromosomal translocation, der (17) t(X; 17)(p11.2;q25), that results in ASPSCR1-TFE3 gene fusion. The natural history of alveolar soft part sarcoma describes indolent behaviour with slow progression in deep soft tissues of the extremities, trunk and head/neck in adolescents and young adults. A high rate of detection of distant metastasis at presentation has been reported, and the most common metastatic sites in dec

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic solid and cystic renal cell carcinoma (ESC-RCC) is an under-recognized, emerging new entity of sporadic renal neoplasms, which is listed as a rare type of renal cell carcinoma in the 2022 WHO renal tumor classification. It is easily misdiagnosed because its characteristics are insufficiently understood.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report one case of ESC-RCC, a 53-year-old female patient with a right kidney mass found during clinical examination. The patient experienced no discomforting symptoms. Computer-tomography imaging at our urinary department showed a round soft tissu

BACKGROUND: The current WHO classification proposed high-grade biliary intraepithelial neoplasm (BilIN) and intracholecystic papillary neoplasm (ICPN) as precursors of the gallbladder carcinoma (GBC). Herein, conventional GBCs (cGBCs) were pathologically examined with respect to these two precursors.
METHODS: Forty-seven cases of GBC with grossly visible invasions were collected from Fukui Saiseikai Hospital. The association of two precursors was analyzed referring to pathologic features of cGBCs and post-operative survival.
RESULTS: 20 cGBCa (42.6%) were associated with either of two precur
