Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma of the spine: an analysis of imaging findings.

BACKGROUND: Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) is a low-grade malignant vascular neoplasm with the potential to metastasize. Primary EHE of the spine is very rare and an accurate diagnosis is crucial to treatment planning. We aim to investigate the imaging and clinical data of spinal EHE to improve the understanding of the disease. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the imaging manifestations and clinical data of 12 cases with pathologically confirmed spinal EHE. The imaging features analyzed included number, locations, size, border, density, signal, majority of the lesions, expansile o

Oral Kaposi sarcoma associated with severe alveolar bone loss: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: In AIDS patients who present with an oral neoplasm, Kaposi sarcoma is the tumor most frequently encountered, comprising 50% to 80% of all tumor occurrences. However, oral Kaposi sarcoma associated with erosion of underlying bone is a relatively rare finding. This report and review of the literature documents a case of AIDS-related oral Kaposi sarcoma exhibiting severe bilateral erosion of the maxillary alveolar ridges. METHODS: An HIV-seropositive male with extensive maxillary Kaposi sarcoma and associated bilateral alveolar bone erosion presented for dental evaluation subsequent

Primary intraosseous cavernous hemangioma of the zygomatic bone.

PURPOSE: We present an uncommon case of primary intraosseous cavernous hemangioma involving the zygoma which displayed CD31 positivity on pathologic analysis. OBSERVATIONS: Macroscopic examination showed a bulging purple-red mass intrinsic to bone measuring 2.1 × 1.8 × 1.6 cm (Fig 2A). Histopathology demonstrated the lesion was comprised of thin-walled vascular channels lined by a monolayer of endothelial cells interspersed among bony trabeculae (Fig 2B) consistent with intraosseous cavernous hemangioma.7,8 Vascular walls lacked both venous and arterial features. Immunohistostaining demonstra

A case of acute monocytic leukemia (AMoL or AML-M5) in an adult FeLV/FIV-positive cat.

A 7-year-old castrated male domestic shorthair cat was presented for evaluation of decreased appetite and respiratory signs. A CBC run on presentation revealed severe nonregenerative anemia, thrombocytopenia, and leukocytosis characterized by a prominent population of blasts, having morphologic features suggestive of a monocytic lineage. The cat tested positive for FIV, FeLV, Mycoplasma haemominutum, and only mild abnormalities were identified on the chemistry panel. Bone marrow biopsies were obtained to investigate the bicytopenia and the possibility of a hematopoietic neoplasm. Although the

Gene fusions PAFAH1B1-USP6 and RUNX2-USP6 in aneurysmal bone cysts identified by next generation sequencing.

Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a locally aggressive, expansile, typically multilocular cystic bone tumor. ABC was previously thought to be a non-neoplastic lesion; however, it is now considered to be neoplasm that features recurrent chromosomal translocations resulting in gene fusions between ubiquitin specific peptidase 6 (USP6) and multiple partners, including COL1A1, CDH11, TRAP150, ZNF90 and OMD. Using next generation sequencing (NGS), we uncovered two fusion partners of USP6 in two ABCs: platelet activating factor acetylhydrolase 1b regulatory subunit 1 (PAFAH1B1), which is known to contri

The Bone Marrow Microenvironment Mechanisms in Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Bone marrow (BM) is a highly complex tissue that provides important regulatory signals to orchestrate hematopoiesis. Resident and transient cells occupy and interact with some well characterized niches to produce molecular and cellular mechanisms that interfere with differentiation, migration, survival, and proliferation in this microenvironment. The acute myeloid leukemia (AML), the most common and severe hematological neoplasm in adults, arises and develop in the BM. The osteoblastic, vascular, and reticular niches provide surface co-receptors, soluble factors, cytokines, and chemokines that

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor-induced rickets.

We describe two prepubertal girls with oncogenic rickets. The first patient, 9 years of age, presented with recent-onset lower-extremity pain. The second girl, presented at 4 years of age following a 9-month period of muscle weakness, bone pain, and poor linear growth. Laboratory analyses in both patients revealed hypophosphatemia and hyperphosphaturia; elevated circulating alkaline phosphatase activity was present in one of them. Radiographic evidence of a generalized rachitic process was evident in both cases. Computerized tomography of the paranasal sinuses and facial bones in patient 1 rev

Biphenotypic Sinonasal Sarcoma: A Genetically Confirmed Case Showing Bone Invasion Accompanying a Non-neoplastic Respiratory Epithelium.

Biphenotypic sinonasal sarcoma is a newly established tumor entity that is associated with distinct clinicopathological findings. Biphenotypic sinonasal sarcoma is a rare, low-grade spindle cell sarcoma that arises in middle-aged females, exclusively in the sinonasal tract. A fusion gene involving PAX3 is detected in most biphenotypic sinonasal sarcomas, which aids in its diagnosis. Here, we report a case of biphenotypic sinonasal sarcoma with its cytological findings. The patient was a 73-year-old woman who presented with purulent nasal discharge and dull pain in the left cheek area. Computed

A Giant in the Neck: Cytomorphology of a Rare Cervical Vertebral Lesion.

BACKGROUND: Giant cell tumour of bone (GCTB) is a locally aggressive primary bone neoplasm that predominantly involves the epiphyseal-metaphyseal regions of long bones. Involvement of the mobile spine is uncommon, with cervical vertebral localization being particularly rare. Preoperative diagnosis at this site can be challenging because of overlapping clinical, radiologic and morphologic features with other giant cell-rich lesions. CASE: A 60-year-old woman presented with progressive neck pain, upper-limb paresthesias and a posterior cervical swelling. Imaging revealed an expansile osteolytic

Venetoclax combined with azacitidine in blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm: a case report and comprehensive review on the current and future treatment.

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is an extremely rare hematological malignancy with a highly aggressive behavior and median survival of <2 years. Especially, most BPDCN patients present with extensive and non-specific skin lesions, usually leading to misdiagnosis as a skin disease and delay therapy. As for treatment, most patients with BPDCN experience relapse shortly after treatment with the traditional regimens. The alleviation of skin symptoms reflects the effects of clinical treatments. Herein, we report a case of a 71-year-old man with intermittent and gradually expand

Solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma in the hilar region: A case of minimal marrow involvement in an elderly male.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma (SEP) is a rare plasma cell neoplasm, constituting around 3 % of plasma cell malignancies. SEP typically presents as a single tumor, either in bone or soft tissue, without systemic disease, and is often misdiagnosed due to its nonspecific symptoms. Diagnosis requires biopsy and extensive imaging studies to exclude multiple myeloma and other malignancies. Here, we present a case of SEP located in the hilar region, initially suspected to be a lung malignancy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old male with a history of hepatitis C pre

Preclinical evidence that use of TRAIL in Ewing's sarcoma and osteosarcoma therapy inhibits tumor growth, prevents osteolysis, and increases animal survival.

PURPOSE: Osteosarcoma and Ewing's sarcoma are high-grade neoplasms typically arising in the bones of children and adolescents. Despite improvement in therapy, the five-year survival rate is only 20% for patients not responding to treatment or presenting with metastases. Among new therapeutic strategies, the efficacy of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), a member of the TNF superfamily with strong antitumoral activity and minimal toxicity to most normal cells and tissues, was investigated by complementary approaches both in vitro and in preclinical models. Anal extraskeletal osteosarcoma in a man: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Osteosarcoma is a common malignancy of bone that usually occurs in individuals in the age range of 0-24 years. Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is a rare tumor presentation which originates in non-bony tissues. Extraskeletal osteosarcoma comprises 2-5% of all osteosarcomas and less than 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas. As compared to bone-derived osteosarcoma, extraskeletal osteosarcoma occurs in older age groups. Extraskeletal osteosarcoma has a poorer prognosis than bone osteosarcoma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of extraskeletal osteosarcoma in the anal region.

Extramedullary Plasmacytoma of the Penis as a First Manifestation of Multiple Myeloma: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Plasmacytoma is a rare plasma-cell neoplasm, which includes bone and extramedullary types. While most cases occur in the head and neck, our report presents an unusual case of extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) in the penis, emphasizing the diverse locations of this condition. CASE PRESENTATION: An 88-year-old man, post-hydrocelectomy, presented with a palpable penile mass causing urinary symptoms. CT scans revealed a tumor with extracapsular spread and potential urethral involvement. Biopsy confirmed lymphoma, later identified as extramedullary plasmacytoma. A follow-up whole-bod

Avulsion injuries: an update on radiologic findings.

Avulsion injuries result from the application of a tensile force to a musculoskeletal unit or ligament. Although injuries tend to occur more commonly in skeletally immature populations due to the weakness of their apophysis, adults may also be subject to avulsion fractures, particularly those with osteoporotic bones. The most common sites of avulsion injuries in adolescents and children are apophyses of the pelvis and knee. In adults, avulsion injuries commonly occur within the tendon due to underlying degeneration or tendinosis. However, any location can be involved in avulsion injuries. Radi

A nonphosphaturic mesenchymal tumor mixed connective tissue variant of the sacrum.

Tumor-induced or oncogenic osteomalacia is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by overproduction of fibroblast growth factor-23 as a phosphaturic agent and renal phosphate wasting. A range of predominantly mesenchymal neoplasms have been associated with tumor-induced osteomalacia and classified as phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor mixed connective tissues. However, phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor mixed connective tissues could be nonphosphaturic in the first stage of the disease, either because the tumors are resected early in the clinical course or because the patient's osteomalacia was
