[Marjolin's ulcer. A 10 year experience in a diabetic foot unit].

BACKGROUND: Marjolin's ulcer is defined as the appearance of a neoplasm within a chronic wound. The most common histological type is squamous. A total of 2 cases treated in our hospital are presented. CLINICAL CASE: Case 1. A 71 year old man who presented with redness and suppuration from the wounds he had in his right foot after an electric shock 40 years earlier. The radiology showed involvement of the 4° and 5° metatarsal. Supracondylar amputation was performed, showing a well-differentiated invasive squamous cell carcinoma. CASE 2: A 56 year old male, paraplegic for 20 years. He was trea

Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is a malignant neoplasm of the skin characterized by an aberrant proliferation of keratinocytes. Cutaneous SCC is the second most common malignancy globally, and usually arises in the chronically sun-damaged skin of elderly white individuals. From a pathologist's perspective, it is important to differentiate cSCC from the benign and reactive squamoproliferative lesions and identify the high-risk features associated with aggressive tumor behavior. In this article, we provide an up-to-date overview of cSCC along with its precursor lesions and important hi

Bovine ocular squamous cell carcinoma.

Ocular squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in animals is a primary neoplasm of epithelial origin. OSCC or "cancer eye" is the most common malignant tumor affecting cattle in North America and is responsible for significant economic losses. In the United States, the prevalence of OSCC varies geographically and is higher in the southwestern region and in lower latitudes with higher levels of sunlight. Control of this disease would be of considerable significance to the economics and profitability of the beef and dairy cattle industries. This article reviews the characteristics of the most commonly af

Skin Tumors Associated With Cutaneous HPV Infection.

Cutaneous human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are widely distributed and often present as commensals in normal skin. Although mucosal HPV types are well-established as drivers of oropharyngeal and anogenital cancers (e.g., HPV16 and 18) as well as condylomas and laryngeal papillomas (e.g., HPV6 and 11), the contribution of cutaneous HPVs to skin tumors remains more elusive. Over several decades, a multitude of studies has evaluated HPV presence across an array of epithelial skin neoplasms ranging from common warts and Bowen disease to nonmelanoma skin cancers such as squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Forty-eight-year-old female MUTYH carrier presenting with five concurrent primary cancers.

BACKGROUND: MUTYH-associated polyposis is a rare disorder resulting from mutations involved in DNA mismatch repair. This results in an increased susceptibility to colonic adenomatosis and other cancers. Studies have examined the resulting frequency of extracolonic manifestations; however, these typically occur alone, concurrently, or temporally separate from an already diagnosed colorectal cancer in individuals with a biallelic mutation. CASE: Reported here is a case of five distinct primary neoplasms presenting simultaneously in a patient monoallelic for an MYH mutation. These neoplasms incl

Surgery of the skull base.

Tumors involving the base of the skull are often occult and may become quite large before detection is possible. Symptomology varies depending upon the nature of the tumor and its placement. These neoplasms have frequently been considered inoperable simply because of their location, but in recent years microsurgical technique and high speed air drills have allowed the modern temporal bone surgeon to gain improved access to the skull base. A wide variety of surgical approaches to tumors in this area have been described in the past 20 years: translabyrinthine, middle fossa, transcochlear, retrol

mASH1 is Highly Specific for Neuroendocrine Carcinomas: An Immunohistochemical Evaluation on Normal and Various Neoplastic Tissues.

CONTEXT: -High-grade neuroendocrine carcinomas and carcinoids can arise in different sites such as lung, gastrointestinal tract, prostate, and skin. Classic neuroendocrine markers such as CD56, synaptophysin, and chromogranin cannot distinguish carcinoids from high-grade neuroendocrine carcinomas. Recently, mouse monoclonal mASH1 has been shown to help discriminate carcinoids from high-grade neuroendocrine carcinomas in various neoplastic sites. To date, there have been no comprehensive immunohistochemistry studies with mASH1 on nonneuroendocrine neoplasms. OBJECTIVE: -To evaluate the specifi

Carcinosarcoma of the pancreas arising in a mucinous cystic neoplasm.

We report a carcinosarcoma of the pancreas in a 67-year-old woman who presented with nausea, vomiting, and painless jaundice. A work-up demonstrated a well-circumscribed mass in the head of the pancreas. After pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy, the tumor was found to be grossly yellow, and it compressed the common bile duct and pancreatic duct. Histological examination of the neoplasm showed a 4.0 x 4.0 x 3.0-cm mucinous cystadenocarcinoma with invasive poorly differentiated carcinoma, well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, and sarcomatous stroma invading into the duodenum. Ther

Non-Hodgkins lymphoma of the nasal cavity: A case report.

We present a rare case of an 81-year-old woman presenting with acute left nasal blockage caused by a large nasal mass of unknown origin. The mass was subsequently diagnosed as diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Nasal/paranasal space involvement in NHL is uncommon, representing only 0.2%-2% of cases. In this case, the nasal NHL mass exhibited a favorable prognosis, in contrast to previously reported sinonasal lymphomas with poor outcomes. The patient underwent excisional biopsy and was treated with 3 cycles of R-CHOP chemotherapy, resulting in complete resolution of the mass confi

Cell adhesion and polarity in squamous cell carcinoma of the lung.

Lung cancer is a deadly disease that can roughly be classified into three histopathological groups: lung adenocarcinomas, lung squamous cell carcinomas (LSCCs), and small cell carcinomas. These types of lung cancer are molecularly, phenotypically, and regionally diverse neoplasms, reflecting differences in their cells of origin. LSCCs commonly arise in the airway epithelium of a main or lobar bronchus, which is an important line of defence against the external environment. Furthermore, most LSCCs are characterized histopathologically by the presence of keratinization and/or intercellular bridg

Pathology of Anal Cancer.

Anal canal cancer is rather an uncommon disease but its incidence is increasing. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most frequent primary anal neoplasm and can encompass a variety of morphologies. HPV infection has a key role in precancerous lesions and cancer development by the production of E6 and E7 oncoproteins. Anal squamous precancerous lesions are now classified according to the same criteria and terminology as their cervical counterparts. The p16 expression by immunohistochemistry is a surrogate marker for human papilloma virus (HPV). Many other tumor types can arise in the anal cana

Metatypical Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma: A Variant Showing Prominent Squamous Differentiation With a Predilection for the Sinonasal Tract and Skull Base.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a malignant salivary gland neoplasm, commonly involving the major and minor salivary glands. Adenoid cystic carcinoma arising in the skull base region is considerably less common and is characterized by aggressive clinical behavior, perineural invasion, and intracranial extension. Classically, these tumors are composed of ductal and myoepithelial cells, arranged as tubules and cribriform structures, as well as in a solid pattern when higher in grade. The distinctive molecular findings in this tumor are the gene fusions involving the MYB/MYBL1 and NFIB genes. Squamou

Second esophageal tumors in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: an assessment of clonal relationships.

Patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (HNSCC) often develop second carcinomas elsewhere in the upper aerodigestive tract. Some of these paired tumors share a common origin, reflecting the ability of a single progenitor cell to replicate, expand, and populate contiguous regions of the upper aerodigestive tract-a process referred to as clonal expansion. The geographical limitations of clonal expansion, however, have not been adequately addressed. For example, it is not known whether a neoplastic clone from the oral cavity, pharynx, or larynx can migrate to the esophagus. We

Epidemiology of vulvar neoplasia in the NIH-AARP Study.

OBJECTIVE: To clarify risk factors for rare vulvar neoplasms. METHODS: Within the NIH-AARP Study, among 201,469 women interviewed in 1995-1996 and followed for a mean of 13.8years, there were 370 diagnoses of incident vulvar neoplasms, including 170 invasive and 198 vulvar intraepithelial neoplasms grade 3 (VIN3). Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated via multivariate logistic regression for various demographic, reproductive and lifestyle factors, with separate consideration of relations according to invasiveness, histology and age at diagnosis. RESULTS: Consis

Verrucous carcinoma of the larynx: a review of 53 patients.

BACKGROUND: Verrucous carcinoma of the larynx is a rare laryngeal neoplasm that can be confused with a benign process. Although usually curable at an early stage, it can be locally aggressive if left untreated. We describe our experience with this tumor and make recommendations for diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: From 1960 through 1990, 53 patients received initial treatment for verrucous carcinoma of the larynx at the Mayo Clinic. We retrospectively reviewed the presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes in these patients. All cases were confirmed by histologic examination. RESULTS:
