METHODS: We used IgM ELISA to estimate the sero-prevalence of leptospirosis in a group of febrile patients in a western region of Nepal. We also tested for possible co-infection with two ot…

Immediate Outcome of Hypoxic Ischaemic Encephalopathy in Hypoxiate Newborns in Nepal Medical College.

BACKGROUND: Birth asphyxia is the fifth major cause of under-five child deaths after pneumonia, diarrhoea, neonatal infections and complications of preterm birth. It is one of the important causes of neonatal mortality and morbidity accounting up to 30% of neonatal death in Nepal. It is also an important cause of long-term neurological disability and impairment. The mortality rate due to birth asphyxia is considered a good guide to the quality of perinatal care. This study was conducted to assess the rate of birth asphyxia, risk factors and outcome of the babies who were asphyxiated at birth. …

Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis in Nepal: a retrospective cohort study (2000-2010).

INTRODUCTION: Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) is a cutaneous complication appearing after treatment of visceral leishmaniasis, and PKDL patients are considered infectious to sand flies and may therefore play a role in the transmission of VL. We estimated the risk and risk factors of PKDL in patients with past VL treatment in south-eastern Nepal. METHODS: Between February and May 2010 we traced all patients who had received VL treatment during 2000-2009 in five high-endemic districts and screened them for PKDL-like skin lesions. Suspected cases were referred to a tertiary care hospi…

The spatial heterogeneity between Japanese encephalitis incidence distribution and environmental variables in Nepal.

BACKGROUND: To identify potential environmental drivers of Japanese Encephalitis virus (JE) transmission in Nepal, we conducted an ecological study to determine the spatial association between 2005 Nepal JE incidence, and climate, agricultural, and land-cover variables at district level. METHODS: District-level data on JE cases were examined using Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA) analysis to identify spatial clusters from 2004 to 2008 and 2005 data was used to fit a spatial lag regression model with climate, agriculture and land-cover variables. RESULTS: Prior to 2006, there wa…

Implementing effective cataract surgical coverage: a comparative qualitative study in Kenya and Nepal.

INTRODUCTION: The WHO has set a 2030 target to raise effective cataract surgical coverage (eCSC) by 30 percentage points in every country, requiring gains in surgical access and quality. Despite this mandate, evidence on how low- and middle-income health systems are implementing eCSC remains limited. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative comparative case study in Kenya and Nepal. 20 interviews were held with senior stakeholders from government, non-governmental organisations, academic institutions and clinical networks. Transcripts were thematically analysed using the consolidated framework for…

Measles outbreaks in Nepal: sustaining rapid response through equity-focused immunization and surveillance.

Recent measles outbreaks in Nepal's Sarlahi and Baglung districts show persistent subnational immunity gaps despite national progress toward measles elimination. This letter supports Nepal's rapid and coordinated outbreak response, particularly in Sarlahi, where early clinical suspicion, laboratory confirmation within 72 hours, household investigation, active case search, vitamin A supplementation, and outbreak response immunization were promptly implemented. These actions demonstrate the value of functional surveillance, laboratory capacity, and multisectoral coordination. However, the outbre…

Infantile tremor syndrome: a case series from the tertiary care center of Nepal.

Infantile tremor syndrome (ITS) is a pediatric disorder characterized by tremors, developmental regression, pallor, and hyperpigmentation, which is frequently associated with vitamin B12 deficiencies. Despite being recognized for decades, it remains underdiagnosed and lacks standardized management guidelines. We describe a case series of children with clinical characteristics suggestive of ITS. All children included in this study were from strictly vegetarian families and exhibited tremors, pallor, and characteristic skin changes. Four of them were diagnosed with ITS after recovering from thei
