The perceptual consequences of interocular suppression in amblyopia.

PURPOSE: It is known that information from an amblyopic eye can be strongly suppressed when both eyes are open. The authors investigated the way in which suppression influences the relative perception of suprathreshold contrast and luminance between a person's eyes under dichoptic viewing conditions. METHODS: Stimuli consisted of four patches of luminance or four patches containing gratings. Two patches were presented to each eye. Ten amblyopes with mild suppression (six strabismic, three anisometropic and strabismic, and one deprivation; mean age, 34.5 years) and three control observers with

Altered pattern of motor cortical activation-inhibition during voluntary movements in Tourette syndrome.

In patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) alterations of motor cortex (M1) excitability at rest have been evidenced. In contrast, there has so far been little research into changes of motor cortical reactivity during the time course of voluntary movements in GTS patients. The present study investigates neuromagnetic event-related desynchronization (ERD) and event-related synchronization (ERS) of bilateral M1 in 11 GTS patients and 11 healthy control subjects. ERD represents motor cortical activation, whereas ERS most likely indicates its inhibition. Subjects performed a self-paced

Evidence for a cortically mediated release from inhibition in the human cochlea.

PURPOSE: To determine cortical influence on the efferent medial olivocochlear bundle system. RESEARCH DESIGN: The effects of attention on contralateral suppression (CS) of click-evoked otoacoustic emissions were measured. STUDY SAMPLE: Fifteen normal-hearing listeners. RESULTS: CS was greatest in the nonattending condition and decreased significantly when attending to the click or broadband noise suppressor. The effects of attention on CS were not frequency dependent or due to changes in recording noise measures. CONCLUSIONS: Attention to either the ipsilateral, evoking stimulus or the con

Coeruleospinal inhibition of visceral nociceptive processing in the rat spinal cord.

Visceral nociceptive information is transmitted in two different areas of the spinal cord gray matter, the dorsal horn and the area near the central canal. The present study was designed to examine whether visceral nociceptive transmission in the two different areas is under the control of the centrifugal pathways from the locus coeruleus/subcoeruleus (LC/SC). Extracellular recordings were made from the L(6)-S(2) segmental level using a carbon filament glass microelectrode (4-6 MOmega). Colorectal distentions (80 mmHg) were produced by inflating a balloon inside the descending colon and rectum

Evidence of diffuse noxious inhibitory controls (DNIC) elicited by cold noxious stimulation in patients with provoked vestibulodynia.

Provoked vestibulodynia is a common cause of superficial dyspareunia in young women. Recent evidence has pointed out the importance of studying endogenous pain modulation in these women. An impairment of diffuse noxious inhibitory controls (DNIC) has been suggested in chronic pain conditions with a female predominance such as fibromyalgia and temporomandibular disorder. Our aim was to examine whether patients with provoked vestibulodynia and healthy women with or without combined oral contraceptives (COC) display a DNIC response to cold noxious stimulation. Twenty patients with provoked vestib

Implicit and explicit processing in deep dyslexia: Semantic blocking as a test for failure of inhibition in the phonological output lexicon.

The failure of inhibition hypothesis posits a theoretical distinction between implicit and explicit access in deep dyslexia. Specifically, the effects of failure of inhibition are assumed only in conditions that have an explicit selection requirement in the context of production (i.e., aloud reading). In contrast, the failure of inhibition hypothesis proposes that implicit processing and explicit access to semantic information without production demands are intact in deep dyslexia. Evidence for intact implicit and explicit access requires that performance in deep dyslexia parallels that observ

Influence of repetitive hand movements on intracortical inhibition.

Repetitive movements have been reported to induce task-specific changes of intracortical inhibition and facilitation, but the mechanism operating shortly after hand movement is unclear. Transcranial magnetic single and paired stimuli (2 ms) were applied to 15 healthy subjects at rest and 1 s after repetitive (every 6 s) active and passive hand extensions. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were recorded from hand extensors (agonists) and flexors (antagonists). A strong overall inhibitory effect was observed after applying paired stimuli. In agonists only, active movements produced significantly la

Inhibitory synchronization of bursting in biological neurons: dependence on synaptic time constant.

Using the dynamic clamp technique, we investigated the effects of varying the time constant of mutual synaptic inhibition on the synchronization of bursting biological neurons. For this purpose, we constructed artificial half-center circuits by inserting simulated reciprocal inhibitory synapses between identified neurons of the pyloric circuit in the lobster stomatogastric ganglion. With natural synaptic interactions blocked (but modulatory inputs retained), these neurons generated independent, repetitive bursts of spikes with cycle period durations of approximately 1 s. After coupling the neu

Lordosis in male rats: the facilitatory effect of mesencephalic dorsal raphe nucleus lesion.

The dorsal raphe nucleus was destroyed (DRL) by a radiofrequency lesion generator in castrated male rats, and lordosis behavior was observed. Five weeks after the surgery, all animals were implanted with two Silastic tubes containing estradiol (E2). Behavioral tests were started 2 days after implantation of E2 and carried out every other day for 16 days. Castrated control and sham-operated control males showed low incidence of lordosis and low lordosis quotient (LQ) throughout the tests, whereas all the DRL males displayed lordosis and the mean LQ of the group was significantly higher than tha

Neuromodulation of the crab pyloric central pattern generator by serotonergic/cholinergic proprioceptive afferents.

In the stomatogastric nervous system of the crab, Cancer borealis, a set of 4 serotonergic/cholinergic proprioceptive neurons, called gastropyloric receptor (GPR) cells, have effects on the pyloric motor pattern. In a semi-intact foregut preparation, the GPR cells are not activated by movements of the pyloric filter; instead they respond to the slower movements of the gastric mill (Katz et al., 1989). Thus, their activity is not synchronized to the pyloric motor pattern. However, when the GPR cells are stimulated in an in vitro preparation in a manner that resembles their normal firing pattern

Non-cholinergic, non-adrenergic inhibitory nerve responses of bladder outlet smooth muscle in vitro.

Pig trigone, bladder neck and urethral smooth muscle strips blocked with atropine, phentolamine, propanolol and the prostaglandin synthesis inhibitor ketoprofen were exposed to transmural electric field stimulation in vitro. The strips developed a fast and reproducible relaxation which was sustained during the period of stimulation and ceased slowly after stopping stimulation. The amplitude of the relaxation was proportional to the basal tension. The relaxation was nerve-mediated, since selective nerve blockade with tetrodotoxin abolished the response. Calcium influx inhibition with verapamil

A depressant area in the lateral nodulus-uvula of the cerebellum for renal sympathetic nerve activity and systemic blood pressure in the rabbit.

Electric stimulation at the nodulus and uvula of the cerebellum with a train of 5-10 pulses caused a marked depression of the renal sympathetic nerve activity. The effective sites were located in a small lateral region extending through the dorsal nodulus and encroaching the ventral uvula, at 2.9-3.7 mm lateral to the midline. The depression occurred predominantly contralaterally. Stimulation at this region with pulse trains lasting for several seconds caused a transient reduction of systemic blood pressure.

Noradrenergic inhibition of the release of substance P from the primary afferents in the rabbit spinal dorsal horn.

To investigate pre-synaptic influence of the descending noradrenergic system on the primary afferents containing substance P (SP), effects of noradrenergic manipulations on the in situ release of immunoreactive SP (iSP) from the dorsal horn were examined in the thalamic rabbit. Local application of noradrenaline (10 microM) to the dorsal horn produced complete inhibition of the noxious mechanical stimuli-evoked release of iSP. This effect was reversed by yohimbine (the more selective alpha 2-blocker, 10 microM) and partially antagonized by prazosin (the more selective alpha 1-blocker, 10 micro

Neural circuits in the flight system of the locust.

Circuitry in the flight system of the locust, Locusta migratoria, was investigated by use of intracellular recording and staining techniques. Neuronal connections were established by recording simultaneously from neuropile segments of pairs of identified interneurons. Brief depolarizing current pulses delivered to interneurons 301 and 501 reset the flight rhythm in a phase-dependent manner, thus establishing the importance of these neurons in rhythm generation. Interneuron 301 was found to make a strong delayed excitatory connection with 501 and to receive a short-latency inhibitory connection

Role of the gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor-ionophore complex in seizure disorders.

The possibility of a role for the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in seizure disorders has been strengthened by biochemical studies showing that various nervous system depressant drugs can modulate GABA receptor binding in vitro. In particular, two classes of anticonvulsant agents, the benzodiazepines and the barbiturates, have modulatory receptor sites on the GABA receptor-ionophore protein complex of the postsynaptic membrane. Furthermore, it is well established that direct block of GABA function causes seizures and that augmentation of GABA function can protect ag

Influence of cerebral cortex stimulation upon cough-like spasmodic expiratory response (SER) and cough in the cat.

In 27 pentobarbitalized cats, the influence of electrical stimulation of the cerebral cortex upon the spasmodic expiratory response (SER) was studied and compared with cortical influences on coughing induced by stimulation of the superior laryngeal nerve (sup. laryngeal N.). This cortical influence was evoked by electrical stimulation of the cortical nucleus of amygdala (Aco), and was very similar to coughing accompanying changes in emotional behavior and was depressed more effectively by psychotropics than by centrally acting antitussives like codeine. When anterior cingulate gyrus (ant. cing

Clonidine: inpatient studies from 1978 to 1981.

We have studied and reviewed data reported by others, which support a norepinephrine (NE) hyperactivity hypothesis for opiate withdrawal. Other hypotheses explained parts of the opiate withdrawal syndrome but the NE hypothesis had the potential to explain most of the clinical manifestations of abrupt opiate discontinuation in addicted persons. Clonidine's ability to almost completely reverse the opiate withdrawal syndrome in acute withdrawal studies supported the NE hypothesis and suggested a new use of clonidine. Lofexidine's efficacy was additional support for the NE hypothesis. Clonidine is

Feed-forward dendritic inhibition in rat hippocampal pyramidal cells studied in vitro.

1. Intracellular recordings from CA1 pyramidal cells in the rat hippocampal slice preparation have been used to study the neuronal pathways involved in hippocampal synaptic inhibition.2. When direct comparisons are made in a single pyramidal cell, orthodromic stimulation delivered to stratum (s.) radiatum in normal recording conditions is found to be more effective than antidromic stimulation in producing inhibitory post-synaptic potentials (i.p.s.p.s).3. Orthodromic i.p.s.p.s in normal conditions appear to be complex, multiphasic events, whereas antidromic i.p.s.p.s are relatively simple. The

Cardiovascular reactivity and neurogenic tone in hypertension derived from renal artery stenosis and contralateral nephrectomy in the rat.

In the current study a) cardiovascular reactivity (CR) to norepinephrine (NE) and b) the effect of a ganglionic blocker (pentolinium, P) during the early (2nd week) and a later period (10th week) of hypertension elicited by unilateral renal ischemia and contralateral nephrectomy in the rat have been described. Neither the threshold doses nor the dose-pressor response curves have shown a greater reactivity of the cardiovascular system to NE in this type of hypertension. An increase in the activity of the nervous system apparently contributes to hypertension in the early period but would disappe
