The neuroanatomy of the human scrotum: surgical ramifications.

OBJECTIVE: To define the scrotal nerve origin and distribution with respect to surrounding structures in male human fetuses, by using neuronal-specific markers and three-dimensional (3D) imaging techniques, as the developmental neuroanatomy of the human scrotum has not been studied in detail and an explicit description of nerve derivation and distribution in the human scrotum is germane to genital reconstructive surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen normal human fetal penile specimens at 17.5-38 weeks of gestation were studied. Specimens were fixed in formalin, embedded in paraffin wax, ser

Evolutionary divergence of the reptilian and the mammalian brains: considerations on connectivity and development.

The isocortex is a distinctive feature of the mammalian brain, with no clear counterpart in other amniotes. There have been long controversies regarding possible homologues of this structure in reptiles and birds. The brains of the latter are characterized by the presence of a structure termed dorsal ventricular ridge (DVR), which receives ascending auditory and visual projections, and has been postulated to be homologous to parts of the mammalian isocortex (i.e., the auditory and the extrastriate visual cortices). Dissenting views, now supported by molecular evidence, claim that the DVR origi

Visual areas in lateral and ventral extrastriate cortices of the marmoset monkey.

The representation of the visual field in visual areas of the dorsolateral, lateral, and ventral cortices was studied by means of extracellular recordings and fluorescent tracer injections in anaesthetised marmoset monkeys. Two areas, forming mirror-symmetrical representations of the contralateral visual field, were found rostral to the second visual area (V2). These were termed the ventrolateral posterior (VLP) and the ventrolateral anterior (VLA) areas. In both areas, the representation of the lower quadrant is located dorsally, between the foveal representation of V2 and the middle temporal

Neural circuit mediating tentacle withdrawal in Helix aspersa, with specific reference to the competence of the motor neuron C3.

The tentacle withdrawal reflex in the terrestrial snail Helix aspersa involves bending and retraction of the tentacles. When elicited by mechanical stimulation of the tentacle, the reflex is mediated by the conjoint action of the central and peripheral nervous systems. The neural circuit underlying the stimulus-response pathways was studied in vitro using a combination of morphological and physiological techniques. Sensory input caused by stimulation of the nose (situated at the superior tentacle's tip) first passes into the tentacle ganglion. Motor fibers are likely excited in the tentacle ga

Peripheral neural circuits regulating IOP? A review of its anatomical backbone.

The peripheral nervous system is classically separated into a somatic division containing both afferent and efferent pathways and an autonomic division composed of efferents only. The somatic afferent division is divided in A- and B-neurons. The B-neurons are supposed to be autonomic afferents as part of a reflex system involved in homeostasis. Recent data obtained by neuronal tracing and immunohistochemical experiments concerning the eye related peripheral nervous system endorse the existence of these peripheral reflex systems. Somatic afferents of trigeminal origin synaptically innervate par

Amine modulation of electrical coupling in the pyloric network of the lobster stomatogastric ganglion.

1. The neurons of the pyloric network of the lobster (Panulirus interruptus) stomatogastric ganglion organize their rhythmic motor output using both chemical and electrical synapses. The 6 electrical synapses within this network help set the firing phases of the pyloric neurons during each rhythmic cycle. We examined the modulatory effects of the amines dopamine (DA), serotonin (5HT) and octopamine (Oct) on coupling at all the electrical synapses of the pyloric network. 2. Electrical coupling within the pacemaker group [anterior burster (AB) to pyloric dilator (PD), and PD-PD] was non-rectifyi

Distinctive pattern of organisation in the retinofugal pathway of a marsupial: I. Retina and optic nerve.

The nasotemporal division in the retina and the pattern of crossed and uncrossed axons in the optic nerve were determined in an Australian marsupial, a wallaby, Setonix brachyurus (the quokka), following unilateral horseradish peroxidase injections into primary visual centres. The gross morphology of the nerve was also examined. Ipsilaterally projecting ganglion cells were restricted to the temporal retina, whereas those that project contralaterally were located in all retinal regions. The morphological study of the nerve showed that fasciculation patterns, evident along much of the length of

Accommodation and the nerve pathway to the ciliary muscle: a review.

Evidence has accumulated recently which challenges the conventional description of the parasympathetic division of the oculomotor nerve pathway to intraocular smooth muscles. It is claimed that the pathway from the midbrain to the ciliary muscle is direct and uninterrupted by a synapse in the ciliary ganglion. A similar, separate claim has been made regarding the innervation of the sphincter muscle of the iris. The weaknesses in the arguments supporting the revised versions are discussed in this review and they are rejected in favour of the conventional pathway.

The projection of the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis and adjacent regions of the pontine nuclei to the central cerebellar nuclei in the cat.

The projection of the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis (NRTP) and the pontine nuclei (NP) to the central cerebellar nuclei (CCN) was investigated by means of anterograde transport of tritiated leucine. Although termination was found in all the CCN, it was most pronounced in the lateral nucleus and the lateral aspect of the posterior interposed nucleus. The extreme lateral aspect of the anterior interposed nucleus and the caudal part of the fastigial nucleus received a projection of modest intensity. Termination in the infracerebellar nucleus and group Y is likely to be present but could not

The callosal connexions of the primary somatic sensory cortex in the monkey.

The callosal connexions of the primary somatic sensory cortex, SI, of the monkey have been studied with axonal degeneration methods after the placement of lesions of varying size in the cortex of one hemisphere and after section of the corpus callosum. For the correlation of the distribution of the degeneration with the cytoarchitectonic subdivisions of SI and with their boundaries, planar reconstructions of the extents of the subdivisions and of area 5 were made. The extent of area 5 is surprisingly large, being about the same as SI, and area 3a can be recognized as a distinct subdivision alo

Selection of pathways by regenerating spinal cord fiber tracts.

We have traced fiber tracts in the regenerating teleost spinal cord and have found that the regenerative capabilities of fiber tracts coming from different parts of the CNS vary considerably. Some descending tracts can regenerate up to 5.6 mm beyond a transection, while other fiber tracts cannot even penetrate the scar tissue. In spite of a great disturbance of their normally ordered pathways as they grow through the lesion site, those tracts which can regenerate can find their appropriate funiculi in the distal spinal cord.

The hypothalamic neurosecretory system of the marine teleost fish, Mugil auratus risso.

The hypothalamic neurosecretory system of the marinefish, Mugil auratus, consists of two nuclei, viz., the nucleus praeopticus and the nucleus laterlis tuberis. Both are paired, and while those of the nucleus praeopticus are vertically arranged as L-shaped bodies, their strand-like counterparts in the nucleus lateralis tuberis extend in an antero-posterior direction. The two constituent bodies of the nucleus praeopticus lie on both sides of the third cerebral ventricle. Each is differentiated into a dorsal pars magnocellularis and a ventral pars parvocellularis. A nervous tract, the hypothalam

The projection of the retina upon the optic tectum of the pigeon.

The projection of the retina onto the optic tectum of the pigeon has been investigated using silver impregnation methods for degenerating axons and terminals, autoradiographic tracing, and the Golgi methods. Degenerating optic afferents distribute to sublaminae a-d and f of the stratum griseum et fibrosum superficiale over the whole tectum, but two major fields are observed. One occupies the caudal and ventral tectum (in which region laminar cytoarchitecture is marked), and the other rostral and dorsal tectum (where demarcation of cell laminae is relatively poor). Degeneration in the latter fi

The olivocerebellar projection in the cat studied with the method of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase.

The distribution of labeled cells in the inferior olive of the cat has been mapped following injections of small amounts of horseradish perosidase in the paramedian lobule of the cerebellum. The distribution of labeled cells was plotted in drawings of approximately serial transverse sections. The findings in each case were transferred to a standard diagram of the olive to facilitate comparison of cases. Previous studies of the distribution of retrograde cell loss in the inferior olive following cerebellar lesions (Brodal, '40b) showed that fibers ending in the paramedian lobule come from the c

Frontoclaustral interrelations in cats and dogs.

In 13 cats and 5 dogs various parts of the frontal lobe were removed. As a result terminal degenerations in the rostral quarter of the insular claustrum were found by Nauta and Fink-Heimer II methods. In cats with motor cortex lesions, the degenerations were localized more dorsally than in cats with removals of the frontoorbital cortex, but there is a large overlap between degenerating areas of the claustrum in both groups of animals. In the dog it even seems possible to differentiate claustral regions in which axons from various gyri of the frontal lobe mainly terminate. It was found under th

Abnormalities of brain dynamics based on large-scale cortical network modeling in autism spectrum disorder.

Synaptic increase is a common phenomenon in the brain of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, the impact of increased synapses on the neurophysiological activity of ASD remains unclear. To address this, we propose a large-scale cortical network model based on empirical structural connectivity data using the Wendling model, which successfully simulates both pathological and physiological electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Building on this, the EEG functional network is constructed using the phase lag index, effectively characterizing the functional connectivity. Our modeling results indi
