Pigmented naevi (moles) are increasingly regarded as risk factors for the development of melanoma. The probability of melanoma developing from congenital naevi is proportional to the volume of the naevi. Cutaneous melanoma is becoming more common. Although still rarer than some cancers it is important, particularly as it afflicts young adults relatively frequently. Furthermore early detection with resultant better prognosis should be achievable if the public was to become more aware, and if health-care professionals were more familiar with melanoma and the behaviour of normal moles.

Congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) are rare, pigmented birthmarks that can predispose patients to melanoma of the central nervous system and skin. Data from non-CMN melanoma cohorts suggest that vitamin D levels may be connected to outcome, prompting this study of 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in plasma samples from 40 children with CMN. Patients with congenital giant nevi (CGN), which can compromise quality of life and progress to melanoma, have limited treatment options. Giant congenital melanocytic nevus (GCMN) is a rare congenital benign neoplasm with the potential to become malignant. Various extracutaneous malformations may accompany GCMN. Acetabular dysplasia accompanying GCMN was described in previous studies. To the best of our knowledge, this case report of ours is the first reported case of GCMN diagnosed and treated with hip dislocation based on developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). The rare coexistence prompted us to report this case.
