Potential roles of cigarette smoking on gut microbiota profile among Chinese men.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is posited as a potential factor in disrupting the balance of the human gut microbiota. However, existing studies with limited sample size have yielded inconclusive results. METHODS: Here, we assessed the association between cigarette smoking and gut microbial profile among Chinese males from four independent studies (N total = 3308). Both 16S rRNA and shotgun metagenomic sequencing methods were employed, covering 206 genera and 237 species. Microbial diversity and abundance were compared among non-smokers, current smokers, and former smokers. RESULTS: Actinomyc…

Systemic Inflammatory Response and Outcomes in Community-Acquired Pneumonia Patients Categorized According to the Smoking Habit or Presence of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

The systemic inflammatory response (SIR) may help to predict clinical progression, treatment failure, and prognosis in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Exposure to tobacco smoke may affect the SIR; the role of smoking in CAP has not been consolidated. We evaluated the SIR and outcomes of hospitalized CAP patients stratified by smoking habits and the presence of COPD. This retrospective analysis was conducted at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona. Baseline, clinical, microbiological, and laboratory variables were collected at admission, using C-reactive protein (CRP) levels as a marker of SIR.

Effect of cigarette smoking on plasma homocysteine concentrations.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking has been recognized as a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, while the role of homocysteine is still not clear. This study investigated the effects of smoking on plasma homocysteine concentration and determined the correlation between this parameter and biological markers of tobacco use, such as plasma thiocyanate and urine cotinine. METHODS: Folate, vitamin B12 and homocysteine were measured in 300 subjects: 138 non-smokers and 162 smokers using immunoassay methods. Cotinine was measured using an enzymatic colorimetric method and thiocyanate by a selec…

The absence of DSM-IV nicotine dependence in moderate-to-heavy daily smokers.

BACKGROUND: Current theoretical models of nicotine dependence assume a close relationship between use and dependence; however, previous data suggest that many daily smokers fail to develop nicotine dependence. OBJECTIVES: To determine what percentage of daily smokers fail to meet DSM-IV criteria for nicotine dependence within their lifetime, how non-dependence relates to duration and quantity of cigarette use, and whether other tobacco use and/or specific dependence criteria differentiate never-dependent and dependent smokers. METHODS: Cross-sectional data collected via personal interview fr

Effect of Smoking on Subgingival Microbiome in Chronic Periodontitis: A 16S rRNA Sequencing Study.

Background: Smoking has a detrimental effect on the periodontal condition. Smoking intensity has recently been considered as a criterion for grading periodontitis cases. However, the influence of smoking intensity on the subgingival microbial community has not been evaluated in depth. This cross-sectional analytical study aims to assess the differences in the subgingival microbiome in adult patients with chronic periodontitis and different smoking habits (heavy smokers versus moderate smokers versus non-smokers). Methods: Sixty patients diagnosed with chronic periodontitis were grouped accordi…

Smoking paradox in coronary function and structure of acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction patients treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention.

BACKGROUND: The Smoking paradox has generated inconsistent findings concerning the clinical prognosis of acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients, while providing limited insights into coronary anatomy and function which are crucial prognostic factors. Therefore, this study aimed to further investigate the existence of smoking paradox in coronary anatomy and function. METHODS: This study divided STEMI patients into smokers and non-smokers. Quantitative coronary angiography, angiography‑derived microcirculatory resistance (AMR) and quantitative flow ratio (QFR) were ut…

Female reproductive and hormonal factors and lung cancer mortality among never-smokers: A prospective cohort study of 287 408 Chinese women.

There is growing, but inconsistent evidence suggesting oestrogen may play a key role in lung cancer development, especially among never-smoking women for whom lung cancer risk factors remain largely elusive. Using the China Kadoorie Biobank, a large-scale prospective cohort with 302 510 women aged 30 to 79 years recruited from 10 regions in China during 2004 to 2008, we assessed the risk of lung cancer death among self-reported never-smoking women who were cancer-free at baseline, in relation to age at menarche, age at menopause, time since menopause, prior use of oral contraceptives (OCP), nu

Chinese never smokers with adenocarcinoma of the lung are younger and have fewer lymph node metastases than smokers.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancers arising in never smokers have been suggested to be substantially different from lung cancers in smokers at an epidemiological, genetic and molecular level. Focusing on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), we characterized lung cancer patients in China looking for demographic and clinical differences between the smoking and never-smoking subgroups. METHODS: In total, 891 patients with NSCLC, including 841 with adenocarcinoma and 50 with squamous cell carcinoma, were recruited in this study. Smoking disrupts the relationship between cerebrospinal fluid IL-1β and multiple subdimensions of sleep.

OBJECTIVE: Inflammatory factors and cigarette smoking have been associated with sleep disorders but molecular mechanisms that regulate sleep, specifically the role of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), remain controversial. Individuals' cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) IL-1β, smoking behavior, and sleep data were collected to investigate how smoking may influence the relationship between CSF IL-1β and sleep via moderation analysis. METHODS: A total of 191 Chinese male patients, including 104 non-smokers and 87 active smokers, scheduled for anterior cruciate ligament reconstructive surgery, were recruited. Pitt…

Interaction between smoking history and gene expression levels impacts survival of breast cancer patients.

In contrast to studies focused on cigarette smoking and risk of breast cancer occurrence, this study explored the influence of smoking on breast cancer recurrence and progression. The goal was to evaluate the interaction between smoking history and gene expression levels on recurrence and overall survival of breast cancer patients. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were fitted for 48 cigarette smokers, 50 non-smokers, and the total population separately to determine which gene expressions and gene expression/cigarette usage interaction terms were significant in predicting overall a…
